Many individuals suffer from sleep disorders associated with chronic pain, neuroendocrine diseases, and primary sleep disorders. Although cervical manual therapy (CMT) is frequently presumed to enhance sleep quality in clinical settings, evidence regarding its effects on sleep remains inconclusive. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of CMT and clinical patterns, providing novel insights into its applicability for sleep disorders and further mechanism studies. Methods: A comprehensive literature survey was conducted by using 6 databases through February 2025, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effect of CMT on sleep quality as clinical outcome, regardless of primary diseases. Results: Among 1220 initial studies, a total of 10 RCTs involving 552 participants were included. All included RCTs assessed sleep quality using patient-reported outcome measures, while only one study utilized objective assessment via polysomnography. Among them, seven RCTs (70.0%) reported significant improvements in sleep quality that were not dependent on alleviating the primary diseases, with notable enhancements in subjective sleep depth and efficiency rather than sleep duration or latency. Sleep benefits were pronounced in primary sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea and bruxism, and in sleep disturbances secondary to other conditions, with limited effects in fibromyalgia (FM). Conclusions: With the dysregulated hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and aberrant serotonergic activity in FM, in this review, we formed a hypothesis and explored the potential effects of CMT on sleep-related serotonergic activity and HPA axis regulation. This scoping review underscores the need for further research to clarify the neuroendocrinological mechanisms underlying CMT’s role in sleep modulation and its potential applications in sleep-related disorders. Short-form video platforms have shifted advertising from standalone, time-bounded spots to feed-embedded, swipeable stimuli, creating a high-velocity processing context that can penalize casting complexity. We ask whether a “one face, many roles” casting strategy (a single actor playing multiple characters) outperforms multi-actor executions, and why. A two-phase pretest (N = 3500) calibrated a realistic ceiling for “multi-actor” casts, then four experiments (total N = 4513) tested mechanisms, boundary conditions, and alternatives. Study 1 (online and offline replications) shows that single-actor ads lower cognitive load and boost account evaluations and purchase intention. Study 2, a field experiment, demonstrates that Need for Closure amplifies these gains via reduced cognitive load. Study 3 documents brand-type congruence: one actor performs better for entertaining/exciting brands, whereas multi-actor suits professional/competence-oriented brands. Study 4 rules out cost-frugality and sympathy using a budget cue and a sequential alternative path (perceived cost constraint → sympathy). Across studies, a chain mediation holds: single-actor casting reduces cognitive load, which elevates brand authenticity and increases purchase intention; a simple mediation links cognitive load to account evaluations. Effects are robust across settings and participant gender. We theorize short-form advertising as a context-embedded persuasion episode that connects information-processing efficiency to authenticity inferences, and we derive practical guidance for talent selection and script design in short-form campaigns. Background: This study investigated sex differences in foot arch structure and function, and their impact on postural control and energy flow during dynamic tasks. Findings aim to inform sex-specific training, movement assessment, and injury prevention strategies. Methods: A total of 108 participants (53 males and 55 females) underwent foot arch morphological assessments and performed a sit-to-stand (STS). Motion data were collected using an infrared motion capture system, three-dimensional force plates, and wireless surface electromyography. A rigid body model was constructed in Visual3D, and joint forces, segmental angular and linear velocities, center of pressure (COP), and center of mass (COM) were calculated using MATLAB. Segmental net energy was integrated to determine energy flow across different phases of the STS. Results: Arch stiffness was significantly higher in males. In terms of postural control, males exhibited significantly lower mediolateral COP frequency and anteroposterior COM peak velocity during the pre-seat-off phase, and lower COM displacement, peak velocity, and sample entropy during the post-seat-off phase compared to females. Conversely, males showed higher anteroposterior COM velocity before seat-off, and greater anteroposterior and vertical momentum after seat-off (p < 0.05). Regarding energy flow, males exhibited higher thigh muscle power, segmental net power during both phases, and greater shank joint power before seat-off. In contrast, females showed higher thigh joint power before seat-off and greater shank joint power after seat-off (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Significant sex differences in foot arch function influence postural control and energy transfer during STS. Compared to males, females rely on more frequent postural adjustments to compensate for lower arch stiffness, which may increase mechanical loading on the knee and ankle and elevate injury risk. The value of personal data can only be unlocked through efficient circulation. This study explores a multi-party collaborative mechanism for personal-data trading, aiming to improve data quality and market vitality via incentive-compatible institutional design, thereby supporting the high-quality development of the digital economy. Symmetry enhancement refers to the use of strategies and mechanisms to narrow the information gap among data controllers, operators, and demanders, enabling all parties to facilitate personal-data transactions on relatively equal footing. Drawing on evolutionary-game theory, we construct a tripartite dynamic-game model that incorporates data controllers, data operators, and data demanders. We analyze how initial willingness, payoff structures, breach costs, and risk factors (e.g., data leakage) shape each party’s strategic choices (cooperate vs. defect) and their evolutionary trajectories, in search of stable equilibrium conditions and core incentive mechanisms for a healthy market. We find that (1) the initial willingness to cooperate among participants is the foundation of a virtuous cycle; (2) the net revenue of data products significantly influences operators’ and demanders’ propensity to cooperate; and (3) the severity of breach penalties and the potential losses from data leakage jointly affect the strategies of all three parties, serving as key levers for maintaining market trust and compliance. Accordingly, we recommend strengthening contract enforcement and trust-building; refining the legal and regulatory framework for data rights confirmation, circulation, trading, and security; and promoting stable supply–demand cooperation and market education to enhance awareness of data value and compliance, thereby stimulating individuals’ willingness to authorize the use of their data and maximizing its value. This umbrella review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the available evidence on the relationship between digital device use and adolescent sleep. It summarizes results from systematic reviews and meta-analyses, presenting the magnitude and direction of observed associations. A total of seven systematic reviews, including five qualitative reviews and two meta-analyses, were included, comprising 127 primary studies with a combined sample of 867,003 participants. The findings suggest a negative impact of digital device use on various sleep parameters, including sleep duration, bedtime procrastination, and sleep quality. Devices such as smartphones and computers were found to have a greater adverse effect, while television use showed a weaker association. The most significant disruptions were observed in relation to social media and internet use, with problematic usage leading to delayed bedtimes, shorter sleep duration, and increased sleep onset latency. The review also highlights the role of timing and duration of device use, with late-night use particularly contributing to sleep disturbances. Biological, psychological, and social mechanisms are proposed as potential pathways underlying these effects. Despite moderate evidence supporting the negative impact of digital media on sleep, there is considerable heterogeneity across studies, and many relied on self-reported data, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. Future research should aim to standardize exposure and outcome measures, incorporate objective data collection methods, and explore causal relationships through longitudinal studies. This umbrella review underscores the importance of developing targeted public health strategies, parental guidance, and clinical awareness to mitigate the potential adverse effects of digital device use on adolescent sleep and mental health. High-quality development highlights the importance of environmental protection and green low-carbon development. The high-quality development of the manufacturing industry is not only the key content for achieving green transformation, but also an important cornerstone for building a modern national industrial system. Current research focuses on companies and governments, ignoring the important value of suppliers and consumers. As a result, existing mechanisms have failed to deliver the desired results. This paper constructs an evolutionary game model involving manufacturing enterprises, local governments, suppliers, and consumers, and systematically analyzes the strategy selection process of the four participating populations. On this basis, the impact of exogenous and endogenous factors on the evolutionarily stable strategy is studied at the microscopic level using numerical simulation methods. The results show that (1) increasing any of the endogenous factors, such as innovative capability, organization building, and industrial resources, can accelerate the evolution of manufacturing enterprises evolve to smart upgrade strategy. (2) Increasing any one of the exogenous factors, such as policy environment, industrial cooperation, and market demand, can accelerate the rate at which manufacturing enterprises choose to adopt the strategy of smart upgrade. The purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical reference for the behavioral strategies of manufacturing enterprises, and to provide a realistic reference for local governments to build a mechanism to promote the high-quality development of the manufacturing industry. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and disabling condition. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may improve symptoms by modulating neuroplastic and inflammatory mechanisms. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial will recruit adult outpatients with MDD showing residual symptoms despite at least four weeks of stable SSRI treatment. Participants will be randomized to active or sham add-on tDCS while continuing their antidepressant regimen. The intervention will consist of 15 sessions over 3 weeks, targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (anode F3, cathode F4) at 2 mA for 30 min per session. The primary outcome is the reduction of depressive symptoms measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HDRS), with remission defined as HDRS-17 ≤ 7. Secondary outcomes include cognitive performance (attention, executive functioning, memory), serum biomarkers (BDNF, VEGF, NGF, NRG1, angiogenin, IGF1, IL-6, TNF-α), cortical excitability assessed by transcranial magnetic stimulation (motor threshold, silent period, intracortical inhibition/facilitation), and cerebral hemodynamics by transcranial Doppler sonography (blood flow velocity, pulsatility, resistivity). Assessments will occur at baseline, post-treatment, and 3- and 6-month follow-ups. This trial aims to evaluate the efficacy of adjunctive tDCS in MDD with residual symptoms and its biological correlates, bridging clinical improvement with electrophysiological and neurovascular mechanisms. Endocrinology and the Lung: Exploring the Bidirectional Axis and Future Directions

The lung is increasingly recognized as an organ with dual endocrine and respiratory roles, participating in a complex bidirectional crosstalk with systemic hormones and local/paracrine activity. Endocrine and paracrine pathways regulate lung development, ventilation, immunity, and repair, while pulmonary cells express hormone receptors and secrete mediators with both local and systemic effects, defining the concept of the “endocrine lung”. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on the endocrine–pulmonary axis. Thyroid hormones, glucocorticoids, sex steroids, and metabolic hormones (e.g., insulin, leptin, adiponectin) critically influence alveologenesis, surfactant production, ventilatory drive, airway mechanics, and immune responses. Conversely, the lung produces mediators such as serotonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide, endothelin-1, leptin, and keratinocyte growth factor, which regulate vascular tone, alveolar homeostasis, and immune modulation. We also describe the respiratory manifestations of major endocrine diseases, including obstructive sleep apnea and lung volume alterations in acromegaly, immunosuppression and myopathy in Cushing’s syndrome, hypoventilation in hypothyroidism, restrictive “diabetic lung”, and obesity-related phenotypes. In parallel, chronic pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, and sleep apnea profoundly affect endocrine axes, promoting insulin resistance, hypogonadism, GH/IGF-1 suppression, and bone metabolism alterations. Pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors further highlight the interface, frequently presenting with paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes. Finally, therapeutic interactions are discussed, including the risks of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis suppression with inhaled corticosteroids, immunotherapy-induced endocrinopathies, and inhaled insulin. Future perspectives emphasize mapping pulmonary hormone networks, endocrine phenotyping of chronic respiratory diseases, and developing hormone-based interventions. Full article

Background: Basketball is characterized as a high-intensity, intermittent sport that places considerable demands on the cardiorespiratory, neuromuscular, and mechanical systems. These physiological requirements are modulated by contextual variables and the athlete’s stage of biological maturation, both of which significantly influence physical fitness outcomes. Consequently, it is imperative to employ age- and development-specific assessment protocols. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the differences in physical fitness across competitive categories and to explore the interrelationships among the various physical assessment tests. Twenty-four male players (U14 = 12; U16 = 12) participated in this research. Methods: Athletes were monitored using WIMUPRO inertial measurement units and completed the SBAFIT test battery to evaluate physical fitness parameters. Statistical analyses included both inferential and correlational approaches, with effect sizes calculated for all relevant variables. The independent variable was the competitive age category of the players. Results: The results indicated notable differences in physical performance between developmental groups, primarily attributed to biological maturation. Significant disparities were observed in measures of aerobic capacity, linear speed, agility, and centripetal force. Conclusions: The comparative nature of this study across developmental categories offers novel insights and practical implications for talent development and training optimization. Full article

Visual Attention to Economic Information in Simulated Ophthalmic Deficits: A Remote Eye-Tracking Study

This study investigated how simulated ophthalmic visual field deficits affect visual attention and economic information processing. Using webcam-based eye tracking, 227 participants with normal vision recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk were assigned to control, central vision loss, peripheral vision loss, or scattered vision loss simulation conditions. Participants viewed economic stimuli of varying complexity while eye movements, cognitive load, and comprehension were measured. All deficit conditions showed altered oculomotor behaviors. Central vision loss produced the most severe impairments: 43.6% increased fixation durations, 68% longer scanpaths, and comprehension accuracy of 61.2% versus 87.3% for controls. Visual deficits interacted with information complexity, showing accelerated impairment for complex stimuli. Mediation analysis revealed 47% of comprehension deficits were mediated through altered attention patterns. Cognitive load was significantly elevated, with central vision loss participants reporting 84% higher mental demand than controls. These findings demonstrate that visual field deficits fundamentally alter economic information processing through both direct perceptual limitations and compensatory attention strategies. Results demonstrate the feasibility of webcam-based eye tracking for studying simulated visual deficits and suggest that different types of simulated visual deficits may require distinct information presentation strategies. As urbanization intensifies, the challenge of preserving industrial heritage while fostering authentic intergenerational connections has become increasingly salient. This study investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) technologies can be applied to enhance authenticity and promote both hedonic and eudaimonic well-being within the context of heritage tourism. Using a facility in Shanghai as a case study, we propose a cultural co-creation mechanism that transforms implicit intergenerational memories into shared cultural resources through digital interaction. The study first evaluates public awareness and participation needs in the context of industrial heritage revitalization. In response, we design an immersive platform that enables visitors of different generations to co-create meaning through historical scene reconstruction, multisensory engagement, and collaborative storytelling. A novel five-sense encoding strategy is introduced to reinterpret the enclosed spatial characteristics of industrial architecture as an experiential form of storytelling. This process fosters a deeper connection to place, contributing to authenticity and well-being. Prototype testing results suggest that this AI-AR-enabled co-creation system supports meaningful cultural attachment, improves authenticity, and facilitates the sustainable transmission of heritage. This research provides a replicable model for integrating digital technology, community participation, and authenticity in the well-being-oriented revitalization of industrial heritage sites. This study investigated the physiological effects of seat vibration during prolonged sitting in a simulated autonomous driving environment. Eleven healthy participants (3 young adults and 8 older adults) viewed a 120-min highway driving video under two conditions: rhythmic seat vibration (2 Hz, mimicking natural respiration) and no vibration. Physiological and behavioral metrics—including Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT), seat pressure distribution, heart rate variability (HRV), body acceleration, and skin temperature—were assessed across three phases. Results demonstrated that seat vibration significantly enhanced parasympathetic activity, as evidenced by increased HF power and decreased LF/HF ratio (p < 0.05), suggesting reduced autonomic stress. Additionally, seated posture remained more stable under vibration, with reduced asymmetry and sway, while the no-vibration condition showed time-dependent postural degradation. Interestingly, skin surface temperature was lower in the vibration condition (p < 0.001), indicating a possible thermoregulatory mechanism. In contrast, PVT performance revealed more false starts in the vibration condition, particularly among older adults, suggesting that vibration may not enhance—and could slightly impair—cognitive alertness. These findings suggest that low-frequency seat vibration can support physiological stability and postural control during prolonged sedentary conditions, such as in autonomous vehicles. However, its effects on vigilance appear limited and age-dependent. Overall, rhythmic vibration may contribute to enhancing passenger comfort and reducing fatigue-related risks, particularly in older individuals. Future work should explore adaptive vibration strategies to balance physiological relaxation and cognitive alertness in mobility environments. Full article

One-Week Elderberry Juice Intervention Promotes Metabolic Flexibility in the Transcriptome of Overweight Adults During a Meal Challenge

Background: Metabolic flexibility, the ability to efficiently switch between fuel sources in response to changing nutrient availability and energy demands, is recognized as a key determinant of metabolic health. In a recent randomized controlled human feeding trial, overweight individuals receiving American black elderberry juice (EBJ) demonstrated improvements in multiple clinical indices of metabolic flexibility, but the mechanisms of action were unexplored. The objective of this study was to utilize RNA sequencing to examine how EBJ modulates the transcriptional response to fasting and feeding, focusing on pathways related to metabolic flexibility. Methods: Overweight or obese adults (BMI > 25 kg/m2) without chronic illnesses were randomized to a 5-week crossover study protocol with two 1-week periods of twice-daily EBJ or placebo (PL) separated by a washout period. RNA sequencing was performed on peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 10 participants to assess transcriptomic responses collected at fasting (pre-meal) and postprandial (120 min post-meal) states during a meal-challenge test. Results: The fasted-to-fed transition for EBJ showed 234 differentially expressed genes following EBJ consumption compared to 59 genes following PL, with 44 genes shared between interventions. EBJ supplementation showed significantly higher enrichment of several metabolic pathways including insulin, FoxO, and PI3K–Akt signaling. KEGG pathway analysis showed 27 significant pathways related to metabolic flexibility compared to 7 for PL. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that short-term elderberry juice consumption may promote metabolic flexibility in overweight adults. Full article

It is important to study if and how athletes’ mental resilience and mindfulness are connected, because both could promote mental health, as well as facilitate coping with stress and successful athletic performance. It was hypothesized that mental resilience and mindfulness would correlate, and also that mental resilience and mindfulness would differ in both means and correlation strength according to the type of sport. The possible nexus of mental resilience and mindfulness with the longevity of sports practice was also examined. The sample consisted of 177 athletes whose mean age was 21 years old and whose average sports practice lasted 8.7 years. Most of them were professional athletes (N = 121, 68.4%). They practiced individual sports (N = 85, 48.0%), combat sports (N = 47, 26.6%), and team sports (N = 45, 25.4%). The Bulgarian adaptations of the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale and the Brief Resilience Scale were used. The athletes’ mental resilience and mindfulness correlated significantly and positively. The athletes’ mental resilience correlated positively with the years of sports practice among the amateur athletes and among the athletes practicing team sports. The athletes’ mindfulness increased with age for the athletes practicing combat sports and team sports. Mindfulness diminished with more years of sports practice for the amateur athletes and for those practicing individual sports. The athletes practicing combat sports had higher mental resilience than those practicing individual sports and those practicing team sports. The male athletes had higher mental resilience than the female athletes. The established positive nexus between the athletes’ mental resilience and mindfulness means that training mindfulness could be a mechanism for strengthening mental resilience, as well as higher mental resilience could facilitate mindful awareness of the present moment and focus attention on what is happening now. The athletes practicing individual sports are those who need more training for enhancing mindfulness and mental resilience. Physical activity and sports participation may contribute to mental health improvement by strengthening mindfulness and mental resilience. Full article

Background: Calcium is essential for maintaining bone health, facilitating muscle contractions, regulating body temperature, and supporting aerobic metabolism. While the relationship between physical activity and calcium metabolism is well established, the impact of calcium intake on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) remains underexplored. The main aim of this study was to assess the effects of calcium intake on CRF and the mediation effect of calcium intake on the relationship between vigorous physical activity participation and CRF. Methods: Analyses were performed on a sample of 576 adult participants (257 males and 319 females) from the Quebec Family Study (QFS) for whom data were available for calcium intake, CRF, and body composition. The effects of calcium intake on CRF and body composition were analyzed by comparing subjects classified into sex-specific tertiles of calcium intake using general linear mixed models. Pearson correlations were also used to document the associations between calcium intake, CRF, and body composition. A mediation analysis was used to determine the effect of calcium intake as a mediator of the association between vigorous physical activity and CRF. Results: The comparison of calcium-based tertiles revealed that low calcium consumers had lower CRF, especially in males. In both males and females, correlation analysis showed that calcium intake was positively associated (p < 0.05) with CRF. Mediation analyses revealed that calcium intake explains an insignificant fraction of the physical activity–CRF relationship. Between-tertile comparisons showed reduced body fat and increased fat-free mass levels when increasing calcium intake, although some of these effects were not statistically significant. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that low calcium intake is associated with reduced aerobic capacity in adult males and females. While the positive relationship observed between calcium and aerobic fitness aligns with calcium’s known physiological roles, further research is needed to clarify the exact mechanisms by which this micronutrient may influence aerobic capacity.
