Raptors, being at top of the food chain, serve as important models to study the impact of changing climate, as they are more vulnerable due to their unique ecology. They are vulnerable to extinction, with 52% species declining population and 18% are threatened globally. The effect of climate change on raptors is poorly studied in the Eastern Himalayan region. The present study offers a complete investigation of climate change effects on the raptors in the northeast region of the Eastern Himalayas, employing ensemble species distribution modeling. The future predictions were employed to model the climate change across two socioeconomic pathways (SSP) i.e. SSP245 and SSP585 for the periods 2041–2060 and 2061–2080. Specifically, five algorithms were employed for the ensemble model, viz. boosted regression tree (BRT), generalized linear model (GLM), multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and random forest (RF). The study highlights worrying results, as only 10.5% area of the NE region is presently suitable for Falco severus, 11.4% for the critically endangered Gyps tenuirostris, and a mere 6.9% area is presently suitable for the endangered Haliaeetus leucoryphus. The most influential covariates were precipitation of the driest quarter, precipitation of the wettest month, and temperature seasonality. Future projection revealed reduction of 33–41% in suitable habitats for F. severus, G. tenuirostris is expected to lose 53–96% of its suitable habitats, and H. leucoryphus has lost nearly 94–99% of its suitable habitats. Such decline indicates apparent habitat fragmentation, with shrinking habitat patches. Full article

Wind energy development is a key component in the transition to sustainable clean energy. Collision probability depends on turbine dimensions and species-specific behaviour, and understanding these relationships is essential for effective Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). We applied a simulation approach based on flight-height distributions of a medium-sized diurnal raptor, the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo). Long-term Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking data from an area with over 200 operating wind turbines in Northeastern Bulgaria were combined with Monte Carlo simulations of the Band collision risk model, and the predictions were validated against 18 years of systematic carcass searches under 114 turbines. Importantly, collision probability of the Common Buzzard was season-dependent, being greater during breeding and wintering, when flights occurred at lower altitudes, and lower during migration, when birds flew higher. Both the simulations and the field data supported an overall relatively low collision probability, indicating a high avoidance rate in this species. These findings suggest that wind energy planning should account for seasonal variation in flight behaviour and community composition, while long-term monitoring remains essential to ensure that cumulative impacts are adequately assessed. Understanding the spatial distribution and socio-cultural perceptions of threatened raptors is essential for evidence-based conservation in biodiverse yet understudied regions such as Nigeria. This study combines species distribution modelling with community-based surveys to explore the ecological and human dimensions influencing raptor conservation. To investigate the influence of anthropogenic pressures on threatened raptors’ reporting rates, we modelled the relationship between the reporting rate (RR) and two key predictors: the Human Footprint Index and population density. Concurrently, 318 questionnaires were administered across multiple sites to assess public perceptions and attitudes toward raptors. Results indicate that there was a notable reduction in the RR of threatened raptor species with an increase in population density (Estimate = −0.085, SE = 0.028, t = −3.056, p = 0.002). In socio-cultural analyses, sentiment analysis revealed that more than 60% of respondents with higher knowledge of raptors often held more negative perceptions, typically associated with poultry predation and cultural beliefs. In contrast, individuals with limited knowledge frequently exhibited more positive (50%) attitudes. Interestingly, areas with high raptor abundance were associated with more negative community perceptions, suggesting that human–wildlife conflict plays a significant role in shaping attitudes. These findings highlight the complexity of human–raptor interactions and the need for conservation strategies that extend beyond formal protected areas. We advocate for an integrated approach that combines ecological modelling with culturally sensitive education and community-based interventions to foster coexistence and support raptor conservation in Nigeria and similar socio-ecological landscapes. Rodent damage significantly affects agriculture around the world. Rodenticides can sometimes control pests, but they are costly, may cause secondary poisoning to nontarget wildlife, and can become less efficient over time due to bait shyness and resistance. Using wildlife as biological pest control agents, particularly barn owls (Tyto spp.), has been suggested as an alternative. Barn owl nest boxes and hunting perches have been added to increase predator pressure, yet few studies have examined their effectiveness. We conducted a field study in forty-five 10 × 10 m2 plots to compare three treatments (biological pest control by adding hunting perches, 1080 rodenticide, and control) on rodent (vole) activity and crop health (alfalfa, Medicago sativa) using unmanned aerial system (UAS) remote sensing and ground surveys. Additionally, we used 24/7 video cameras and a machine learning (YOLOv5) object detection algorithm to determine whether hunting perches increase the presence of diurnal and nocturnal raptors. Rodent activity increased during the study and did not vary among the treatments across all three treatment groups, indicating that neither the biological pest control nor the rodenticides prevented the rodent population from increasing. Moreover, the vegetation indices clearly showed that the alfalfa has become increasingly damaged over time, due to the rising damage caused by rodents. There were significantly more raptors in plots with hunting perches than in control plots and those treated with rodenticides. Specifically, barn owls and diurnal raptors (mainly black-shouldered kites) spent 97.92% more time on hunting perch plots than rodenticide plots and 97.61% more time on hunting perch plots than control plots. The number of barn owls was positively related to vole activity, indicating a bottom-up process, while the number of black-shouldered kites was unrelated to vole activity. Even though hunting perches effectively increased the presence and activity of diurnal and nocturnal raptors, rodent populations increased. Future research should investigate whether hunting perches can increase raptor populations and improve crop health in crops beyond alfalfa, which is known to be particularly challenging to control for voles. Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is a causative agent of infectious mononucleosis and is strongly associated with Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. EBV encodes a deubiquitinating enzyme, BPLF1, which is important for infectious virus production, B-cell immortalization, and tumorigenesis. To elucidate BPLF1’s role, an affinity-based mass spectrometry screen was performed, which suggested that BPLF1 and mTOR interact. mTOR, a critical mediator within cellular signaling cascades and oncogenesis, exists in two distinct complexes: mTOR Complex 1 (mTORC1) and mTOR Complex 2 (mTORC2). Here, we show that BPLF1 has direct deubiquitinating (DUB) activity on mTOR, removing both K48- and K63-ubiquitin linkages. Additionally, WT BPLF1 decreased mTORC1 localization to the lysosome and decreased the phosphorylation of mTORC1 downstream effectors, 4E-BP1 and S6K1. BPLF1 also had DUB activity on Raptor and Rictor, which have both been shown to preferentially cause the formation of mTORC2 over mTORC1 when not ubiquitinated. Immunoprecipitation of mTOR shows decreased mTORC1 formation in the presence of WT BPLF1. Importantly, treatment with rapamycin, an mTORC1 inhibitor, increased infectious virus production, while JR-AB2-011, an mTORC2 inhibitor, reduced infectious virus production. Taken together, these data demonstrate that BPLF1’s effect on the mTOR signaling cascade regulates cellular and viral processes during EBV infectivity and replication. Full article

In order to determine the impact of urbanization on raptors in the semi-desert conditions of southwestern Kazakhstan, an analysis of the spatio-temporal distribution of raptors is presented for the first time based on the results of surveys of the avifauna of Kyzylorda. Eight species of raptors were recorded: field Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus), Marsh Harrier (C. aeroginosus), Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), Long-Legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus), Eurasian Buzzard (B. buteo), Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis), Eurasian Hobby (Falco subbuteo), and Common Kestrel (F. tinnunculus). The probability of raptors being present was negatively associated with dense urban low-rise buildings with limited greenery in the bay and the new part of the city. At the same time, the dense urban development with little or no greenery in the old central part of the city provides adequate habitat (including a foraging base and nesting sites) for the Common Kestrel. Raptor presence was positively associated with the Syrdarya River floodplain and wasteland with small groups of trees and/or shrubs. The landfill site located on the north-eastern edge of the city serves as a feeding ground for the Long-Legged and Eurasian Buzzards, while the airport area is inhabited by the Eurasian Buzzard, Steppe Eagle, and Common Kestrel. Based on this study, we would recommend that enterprises (e.g., grain storage facilities, airports) and local executive bodies who are interested in the conservation of raptors and regulating the population of the pigeons around their territories should retain or plant more native vegetation and shrubs and preserve areas with green spaces. Breeding performance encompasses offspring production, their survival rate, fertility, overall reproductive outcome, timing of reproduction, and breeding frequency. It varies in raptor species, being affected by different biotic, abiotic, and anthropogenic factors. The Lesser Spotted Eagle is a monogamous, long-lived, slowly reproducing raptor, characterized by site-fidelity and strongly territorial behavior. In this study, we examined data collected over a 10-year period, highlighting the eagles’ main breeding parameters, analyzing whether any of them demonstrated significant trends or spatial or temporal differences over the study period. We also searched for a strict correlation between species breeding density and breeding performance. We found out that the mean occupancy rate of the territories marginally decreased β2 = −0.64 ± 0.27, p = 0.047, as this process was clearly visible in Sakar Mnt. (β2 = −0.66 ± 0.27, p = 0.038), where in 2022, only 67% of the monitored territories were occupied. The overall mean productivity, breeding success, and breeding frequency did not indicate any trend over the years (p > 0.05). Of all tested breeding parameters, occupancy rate (β2 = 0.29 ± 0.14, p = 0.04) and breeding success (β2 = −0.12 ± 0.06, p = 0.04) varied yearly, while productivity (β2 = 0.25 ± 0.12, p = 0.03) and breeding frequency (β2 = 0.27 ± 0.12, p = 0.03) were influenced by density. None of the tested indicators demonstrated significant regional differences, which indicated a temporally determinate, but spatially consistent pattern of breeding performance of the species in this part of its distribution. Recently, the landscape pattern in the south-eastern part of the country was marked by spectacular habitat loss, driven by human activities and natural phenomena, with entire biodiversity facing an uncertain future. Prompt action and urgent decisions are needed to prevent the negative consequences of these imminent threats to the species. Conservation efforts should be focused on the restoration of breeding and foraging habitats. Further research on the response of eagles to the effect of natural (fires) and anthropogenic (habitat transformation) factors, as well as the relationship between breeding performance and different drivers of reproduction, such as diet, weather, habitat features, and presence of intra- and interspecific competitors, would be of crucial significance. This report presents the first complete natal dispersal trajectory of a female Montagu’s Harrier Circus pygargus, tracked in real time from fledging to first breeding using high-resolution continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry. The bird’s first flight occurred on 26 July 2024, initiating a 31-day post-fledging dependence phase (PFDP), followed by a 23-day pre-migratory phase (PMP), during which it explored areas up to 280.8 km from the nest and eventually settled ca. 190 km away in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. From there, autumn migration began on 18 September 2024. The bird reached its first wintering site in Mali by 15 October. It used four wintering areas over 178 days, with a winter home range of 37,615.02 km2. Spring migration started on 11 April 2025 and lasted 21 days, ending with arrival in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park (Central Italy) on 2 May. The bird used two main sites during the pre-breeding phase (PRBP) before laying eggs on 2 June 2025. The natal dispersal distance, from birthplace to nest site, was 151.28 km. Over 311 days, it covered a total of 14,522.23 km. These findings highlight the value of advanced telemetry in revealing early-life movement ecology and are useful for understanding species-specific patterns of survival, reproduction, and space use and can inform conservation actions. The non-traditional companion animal (NTCA) sector, particularly involving avian species, has significantly expanded in Italy, raising concerns over the spread of infectious diseases. These animals can harbor various pathogens and act as reservoirs, posing risks to native wildlife through legal or illegal trade, escapes, or intentional releases. However, the epidemiology of avian pathogens in NTCAs remains poorly understood and is typically investigated only in symptomatic individuals. In the present study, cloacal and choanal cleft swabs were collected from 319 ornamental and raptor birds across 19 families, pooled and tested for beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avian polyomavirus (APV-1), psittacid herpesvirus 1 (PsHV-1), and avian metapneumovirus (aMPV). BFDV and APV-1 were detected in 13.79% and 2.19% of birds, respectively, with five co-infections. No cases of PsHV-1 or aMPV were found. Both viruses showed a higher prevalence than in previous Italian and most of international studies, with several non-psittacine species, including birds of prey, testing positive—some for the first time. Mixed-species settings and participation in public exhibitions were proven as significant infection risk factors. The study highlights the growing relevance of BFDV and APV-1 in non-commercial birds and recommends improved biosecurity and preventive screening to reduce disease spread and safeguard animal health. The eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) has shown a marked population increase in the past decades in Hungary. The breeding range is expanding towards homogeneous agricultural habitats of the Hungarian Plain, where the already existing and recently growing infrastructural network is thought to be one of the main factors limiting distribution. We used data from 508 breeding attempts between 1989 and 2008 to assess the effects of infrastructural networks on breeding distribution. We constructed a single cumulative infrastructure effect (CIE) variable based on the avoidance of different infrastructure types by eagles in the past 20 years. Conditional autoregressive models were built in a Bayesian framework to quantify the effects of infrastructures on the spatial breeding pattern in a pre-defined core study area. Both multivariate and CIE models were able to classify the presence of breeding attempts with high accuracy. The CIE variable was used to build a predictive distribution model for the Hungarian Plain. The results suggest that infrastructure has a significant local effect but does not necessarily hinder the future range expansion of imperial eagles, as two-thirds of the prediction area seems to be suitable for the species. The methods and results described enable conservation managers and policy makers to assess the trade-off between infrastructural development and nature conservation priorities. Full article

Birds and People in Medieval Bulgaria—A Review of the Subfossil Record of Birds During the First and Second Bulgarian Empires

For the first time, the numerous scattered data on birds (wild and domestic) have been collected based on their medieval bone remains discovered on the modern territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. The collected information is about a total of 37 medieval settlements from the time of the First and Second Bulgarian Empires. Among the settlements studied are both the two medieval Bulgarian capitals (Pliska and Veliki Preslav), as well as other cities, smaller settlements, military fortresses, monasteries, and inhabited caves. The data refer to a total of 48 species of wild birds and 6 forms of domestic birds of 11 avian orders: Accipitriformes, Anseriformes, Ciconiiformes, Columbiformes, Falconiformes, Galliformes, Gruiformes, Otidiformes, Passeriformes, Pelecaniformes, and Strigiformes. The established composition of wild birds amounts to over one tenth (to 11.5%) of the modern avifauna in the country. Five of the established species (10.4%) have disappeared from the modern nesting avifauna of the country—the bearded vulture, the great bustard, the little bustard, the gray crane, and the saker falcon (the latter two species have reappeared as nesters in the past few years). First Bulgarian Empire (681–1018): Investigated settlements—22. Period covered—five centuries (7th to 11th c.). Found in total: at least 44 species/forms of birds, of which 39 species of wild birds and 5 forms of poultry. Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396): Investigated settlements—15. Period covered—3 centuries (12th to 14th c.). Found in total: at least 39 species/forms of birds, of which 33 species of wild birds and 6 forms of poultry. The groups of raptors, water, woodland, openland, synanthropic and domestic birds were analyzed separately. The conclusion was made that during the two periods of the Middle Ages, birds had an important role in the material and spiritual life of the population of the Bulgarian lands. Birds were mainly used for food (domestic birds), although some were objects of hunting. No traces of processing were found on the bones. Birds were subjects of works of applied and monumental art. Research on anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in wildlife has primarily focused on apex predators, with less attention given to their potential integration into lower trophic levels and the associated exposure pathways. At the base of the terrestrial food web, invertebrates have been suggested as potential vectors of ARs to insectivorous species such as small mammals, reptiles, and birds. To explore this hypothesis, we analyzed the presence of nine anticoagulant rodenticides—including both first-generation (FGARs) and second-generation (SGARs) rodenticides—in 36 liver samples from Yemen chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and 98 liver samples from six non-raptorial, predominantly insectivorous bird species from the Canary Islands. Through HPLC-MS/MS analysis, only SGARs were detected in both animal groups collected between 2021 and 2024. Approximately 80% of reptiles and 40% of birds tested positive for at least one SGAR, with brodifacoum being the most frequently detected compound. In more than 90% of positive cases, it was found as the sole contaminant, while co-occurrence with other SGARs was uncommon. Additionally, most concentrations were below 50 ng/g wet weight, except for two bird specimens, suggesting heterogeneous exposure scenarios and potential variability in contamination sources across individuals. These findings provide evidence of AR integration at the base of the terrestrial food web in the Canary Islands and suggest secondary exposure via invertebrates as a plausible route of contamination. Further research directly analyzing invertebrate samples is needed to confirm their role as vectors of ARs to insectivorous wildlife in insular ecosystems. Full article

Research on the gut microbiome, which includes microbial communities and genetic material in the gastrointestinal tract, has revealed essential roles beyond digestion, such as immune regulation, metabolism, and homeostasis. However, studies on birds—key ecosystem members—remain limited. Injured wild birds admitted to wildlife hospitals often receive antibiotics that can alter gut microbiota, leading to dysbiosis and promoting antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria. This study examined how hospitalization and antibiotics influence the cloacal microbiota of barred owls admitted for fracture repair. A total of 17 cloacal swab samples were analyzed using next-generation sequencing targeting 16S rRNA and AMR genes. Across all samples, Bacillota (Firmicutes), Actinomycetota (Actinobacteria), and Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria) were the most abundant phyla. In non-antibiotic-treated owls, alpha and beta diversity showed no significant changes between admission and release; however, antibiotic-treated owls exhibited significant diversity shifts in these parameters at release. AMR genes were detected in most samples at admission, with some increasing significantly during hospitalization, suggesting an impact of antibiotic exposure. These findings provide insights into how antibiotics used in wildlife rehabilitation affect host microbiota and contribute to AMR gene dissemination. Full article

Bird eyes are more neglected organs in studies targeting the structure of the helminth fauna, which are instead mainly focused on the digestive and respiratory systems. In an extended study aimed at identifying helminths in the common buzzard (Buteo buteo), the eyes of 92 birds were also examined. Morphological characteristics and molecular analyses were used to identify the collected specimens. Eyeworms were found in only one bird, a juvenile male (1/92; 1.08%). Two nematodes were collected, a female and a fourth-stage larva. This is the first report of Oxyspirura petrowi in the common buzzard. The results highlight the need for careful examination of raptors’ eyes as ocular parasitism can affect their vision. Full article
