To address the challenge of time-varying reliability assessment for double-span rotor systems under misalignment faults and load-sharing conditions, a time-varying reliability modeling method based on neural networks and reliability velocity mapping is proposed in this paper. By establishing a system dynamics model coupled with misalignment fault, a feedforward neural network surrogate model is constructed to efficiently predict stochastic stress responses, overcoming the limitations of high computational cost and difficulty in probabilistic analysis inherent in traditional finite element methods. Furthermore, by introducing the concept of reliability velocity, an intelligent mapping from independent systems to dependent systems is established, significantly enhancing the assessment accuracy of system time-varying reliability under small-sample conditions. Case study validation demonstrates that the proposed method can accurately capture the system degradation behavior under load-sharing and failure dependency mechanisms, providing a theoretical foundation for reliability analysis and intelligent operation and maintenance of rotor systems. This paper reviews and analyzes three types of vertical-axis wind rotors: the classic Savonius, spiral Savonius, and Darrieus designs. Using numerical modeling methods, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), their aerodynamic characteristics, power output, and efficiency under different operating conditions are examined. Key parameters such as lift, drag, torque, and power coefficient are compared to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each rotor. Results highlight that the Darrieus rotor demonstrates the highest efficiency at higher wind speeds due to lift-based operation, while the spiral Savonius offers improved stability, smoother torque characteristics, and adaptability in turbulent or low-wind environments. The classic Savonius, though less efficient, remains simple, cost-effective, and suitable for small-scale urban applications where reliability is prioritized over high performance. In addition, the study outlines the importance of blade geometry, tip speed ratio, and advanced materials in enhancing rotor durability and efficiency. The integration of modern optimization approaches, such as CFD-based design improvements and machine learning techniques, is emphasized as a promising pathway for developing more reliable and sustainable vertical-axis wind turbines. Although the primary analysis relies on numerical simulations, the observed performance trends are consistent with findings reported in experimental studies, indicating that the results are practically meaningful for design screening, technology selection, and siting decisions. Unlike prior studies that analyze Savonius and Darrieus rotors in isolation or under heterogeneous setups, this work (i) establishes a harmonized, fully specified CFD configuration (common domain, BCs, turbulence/near-wall treatment, time-stepping) enabling like-for-like comparison; (ii) couples the transient aerodynamic loads p(θ,t) into a dynamic FEA + fatigue pipeline (rainflow + Miner with mean-stress correction), going beyond static loading proxies; (iii) quantifies a prototype-stage materials choice rationale (aluminum) with a validated migration path to orthotropic composites; and (iv) reports reproducible wake/torque metrics that are cross-checked against mature models (DMST/actuator-cylinder), providing design-ready envelopes for small/medium VAWTs. Overall, the work provides recommendations for selecting rotor types under different wind conditions and operational scenarios to maximize energy conversion performance and long-term reliability. The study investigates the impact of motions of floating offshore wind turbine platforms on wake evolution and overall wind farm performance, employing large-eddy simulation (LES) and dynamic wake modeling method. First, the differences between wakes of floating and bottom-fixed wind turbines under forced motion are examined. Subsequently, a systematic comparative analysis is performed for four representative floating platform configurations—Spar, Semi-submersible, Tension-Leg Platform (TLP), and Monopile (Mnpl)—to assess wake dynamics and downstream turbine responses within tandem-arranged arrays. Results indicate that platform pitch motion, by inducing periodic variations in the rotor’s relative inflow angle, significantly enhances wake unsteadiness, accelerates kinetic energy recovery, and promotes vortex breakdown. Tandem-arrange turbines simulations further reveal that platform-dependent motion characteristics substantially influence wake center displacement, velocity deficit, downstream turbine thrust, and overall power fluctuations at the wind farm scale. Among the examined configurations, the Spar platform exhibits the most pronounced wake disturbance and the largest downstream load and power oscillations, with rotor torque and thrust increasing by 10.2% and 10.6%, respectively, compared to other designs. This study elucidates the coupled mechanisms among 6-DOFs (Six Degrees Of Freedom) motions, wake evolution, and power performance, providing critical insights for optimizing floating wind farm platform design and developing advanced cooperative control strategies. Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (AFPMSM) offers high power density in structures with short axial lengths and large radial dimensions, making it attractive for applications that require thin structures, such as in-wheel motors. This study proposes an AFPMSM design process applicable under fixed inner/outer diameter and axial length constraints. The proposed process is presented as step-by-step procedures: selection of pole/slot combinations, adjustment of slot depth, determination of stator/rotor dimensional ratios, and slot structure design. It is universally applicable to both bobbin-type rectangular wire windings and shoe-type round wire windings. The validity of the proposed process was verified through finite element method (FEM) analysis, and the differences between the two winding structures were examined through post-processing of the results. By presenting an AFPMSM design methodology that can be consistently applied under constrained spatial conditions, this study provides practical design guidelines for the development of in-wheel motors for next-generation mobility applications. The non-uniform distribution of outlet parameters in a Radial Wave Rotor Combustor (RWRC) significantly impacts downstream component performance. This study aims to investigate the spatial-temporal characteristics of temperature and pressure at the RWRC outlet. Three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations were coupled with a User-Defined Function (UDF) to efficiently model the combustion process. The Shear-Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model was employed. Quantitative metrics including Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) and Christiansen Uniformity Coefficient (CUC) were introduced to evaluate the non-uniformity. The results reveal significant temporal fluctuations and spatial non-uniformity in both temperature and pressure. At 3000 r/min, the average temperature fluctuation amplitude and uniformity coefficient are 0.38 and 0.9, respectively, while the pressure fluctuation amplitude reaches 0.44. Crucially, temperature distribution expands circumferentially with increasing speed, whereas pressure distribution remains locally concentrated and is less sensitive to speed variations. This study provides a quantitative assessment of outlet non-uniformity in RWRC, highlighting the distinct behaviors between temperature and pressure distributions. The findings offer critical insights for the design and optimization of wave rotors and their integration with downstream components. Full article

This paper focuses on the vibration analysis of a prototype helicopter rotor test stand, with particular attention to the dynamic response of its electric propulsion system. The stand is driven by an induction motor and equipped with composite rotor blades of various geometries, including blades with shape memory alloy (SMA)-based torsion actuators for angle of attack (AoA) adjustment. These variable geometries significantly influence the system’s dynamic behavior, where resonance phenomena may pose risks to structural integrity. The objective was to investigate how selected operational parameters specifically motor speed and AoA affect the vibration response of the propulsion system. Structural vibrations were measured using a tri-axial piezoelectric accelerometer system integrated with calibrated signal conditioning and high-resolution data acquisition modules. This setup enabled precise, time-synchronized recording of dynamic responses along all three axes. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Power Spectral Density (PSD) methods were applied to identify dominant frequency components, including those associated with rotor harmonics and SMA activation. The highest vibration amplitudes were observed at an AoA of 16°, but all results remained within the vibration limits defined by MIL-STD-810H for rotorcraft drive systems. The study confirms the importance of sensor-based diagnostics in evaluating electromechanical propulsion systems operating under dynamic loading conditions. Full article

This paper proposes a novel methodology based on two intelligent algorithms for regulating the power output of a multi-rotor turbine system. A proportional-integral plus second-order integral regulator is utilized to regulate the energy output of an induction generator. The designed controller is characterized by its ease of configuration, cost-effectiveness, high robustness, and ease of implementation. The controller’s parameters are tuned using a genetic algorithm (GA) and a rooted tree optimization (RTO) algorithm, with the objective of maximizing operational performance and power quality. In accordance with the proposed design methodology, the optimal values for the parameters of the designed strategy are attained through the implementation of integral time-weighted absolute error (ITAE). The present controller has been designed to deviate from conventional controllers, and a comparison will be made between the two using MATLAB under various operating conditions. The operational performance was evaluated in comparison to the conventional algorithm in terms of current quality, torque ripples, threshold overshoot, system parameter changes, and so forth. The experimental results, as measured by the tests conducted, demonstrated that the proposed RTO-based regulator exhibited enhancements of up to 89.88% (traditional control) and 51.92% (GA) in active power ripples, 68.19% (compared to traditional control) in ITAE, 51.91% (traditional control) in reactive power overshoot, and 0.5% (compared to GA) in active power response time. Conversely, the proposed GA-based regulator yielded a steady-state error value that was 96.55% superior to the traditional approach and 86.48% more accurate than the RTO algorithm. Moreover, the efficacy of the RTO-based control system was found to be considerably augmented under variable system parameters. Total harmonic distortion improvements of 69% were observed compared to traditional control methods, and 1% compared to the GA technique. The findings of this study offer significant insights into enhancing the robustness of multi-rotor turbine systems and improving power quality. Full article

The cooling system is a core component for a vehicle’s powertrains to operate smoothly and maintain a satisfying noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance. However, advances in new energy vehicles bring with them complex requirements for the cooling fan design due to new issues such as increased heat load, dynamic variations, and high-speed vibrations, which demand the optimization of fan dynamics over a wide range of parameters. In this paper, by thoroughly checking the effect of rigid–flexible coupling and the geometrically complex elastic frame of the fan, we propose a combined modeling approach to reduce the computational time of broad-range parameter variation analysis and examine the vibration problem in the cooling fans under various external excitations. First, the complicated frame of the fan is simplified through virtual prototyping based on an experiment. Then, modal transition is applied, reducing the complex kinetic expression, and a time-invariant system model is derived with multi-blade coordinate transformation. Stability and bifurcation analysis are performed regarding different excitation couplings from the rotor, powertrain, and road. The results of the simulation and experiment illustrate that the proposed methodology achieves a substantial reduction in computational time, and all degrees of freedom (DOFs) are divided into two groups including symmetrical and asymmetrical types. The results also imply the great potential for the optimization and control of the high-speed fan’s vibration for new energy cars. Full article

Magnetically controlled spinal growing rods, used for treating early-onset scoliosis (EOS), face a critical clinical limitation: insufficient distraction force. Compounding this issue is the inherent inability to directly monitor the mechanical output of such implants in vivo, which challenges their safety and efficacy. To overcome these limitations, optimizing the rotor’s maximum torque is essential. Furthermore, defining the “continuous rotation domain” establishes a vital safety boundary for stable operation, preventing loss of synchronization and loss of control, thus safeguarding the efficacy of future clinical control strategies. In this study, a transient finite element magnetic field simulation model of a circumferentially distributed permanent magnet–rotor system was established using ANSYS Maxwell (2024). The effects of the clamp angle between the driving magnets and the rotor, the number of pole pairs, the rotor’s outer diameter, and the rotational speed of the driving magnets on the rotor’s maximum torque were systematically analyzed, and the optimized continuous rotation domain of the rotor was determined. The results indicated that when the clamp angle was set at 120°, the number of pole pairs was one, the rotor outer diameter was 8 mm, the rotor achieved its maximum torque and exhibited the largest continuous rotation domain, while the rotational speed of the driving magnets had no effect on maximum torque. Following optimization, the maximum torque of the simulation increased by 201% compared with the pre-optimization condition, and the continuous rotation domain was significantly enlarged. To validate the simulation, a rotor torque measurement setup incorporating a torque sensor was constructed. Experimental results showed that the maximum torque improved from 30 N·mm before optimization to 90 N·mm after optimization, while the driving magnets maintained stable rotation throughout the process. Furthermore, a spinal growing rod test platform equipped with a pressure sensor was developed to evaluate actuator performance and measure the maximum distraction force. The optimized growing rod achieved a peak distraction force of 413 N, nearly double that of the commercial MAGEC system, which reached only 208 N. The simulation and experimental methodologies established in this study not only optimizes the device’s performance but also provides a viable pathway for in vivo performance prediction and monitoring, addressing a critical need in smart implantable technology. Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have significant potential for renewable energy generation, yet their operational efficiency is often limited by reduced aerodynamic performance and difficulties during start-up. This study investigates the effect of passive flow control and material selection on the performance of H-Darrieus VAWT blades, with the aim of identifying design solutions that enhance start-up dynamics and overall efficiency. Two-dimensional numerical simulations were conducted using the Dynamic Mesh method with six degrees of freedom (6DOF) in ANSYS 19.2 Fluent, enabling a time-resolved assessment of rotor behavior under constant wind velocities. Two blade configurations were analyzed: a baseline NACA0012 geometry and a modified profile with inclined cavities on the extrados. In addition, the influence of blade material was examined by comparing 3D-printed resin blades with lighter 3D-printed polycarbonate blades. The results demonstrate that cavity-modified blades provide superior performance compared to the baseline, showing faster acceleration, higher tip speed ratios, and improved power coefficients, particularly at higher wind velocities. Furthermore, polycarbonate blades achieved more efficient energy conversion than resin blades, highlighting the importance of material properties in turbine optimization. These findings confirm that combining passive flow control strategies with advanced lightweight materials can significantly improve the aerodynamic and dynamic performance of VAWTs, offering valuable insights for future experimental validation and prototype development. Aiming at the speed chattering problem caused by high-frequency square wave injection in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) during low-speed operation (200–500 r/min), this study intends to improve the rotor position estimation accuracy of sensorless control systems as well as the system’s ability to resist harmonic interference and sudden load changes. The goal is to enhance the control performance of traditional control schemes in this scenario and meet the requirement of stable low-speed operation of the motor. First, the study analyzes the harmonic error propagation mechanism of high-frequency square wave injection and finds that the traditional PI phase-locked loop (PI-PLL) is susceptible to high-order harmonic interference during demodulation, which in turn leads to position estimation errors and periodic speed fluctuations. Therefore, the extended state observer phase-locked loop (ESO-PLL) is adopted to replace the traditional PI-PLL. A third-order extended state observer (ESO) is used to uniformly regard the system’s unmodeled dynamics, external load disturbances, and harmonic interference as “total disturbances”, realizing real-time estimation and compensation of disturbances, and quickly suppressing the impacts of harmonic errors and sudden load changes. Meanwhile, a dynamic pole placement strategy for the speed loop is designed to adaptively adjust the controller’s damping ratio and bandwidth parameters according to the motor’s operating states (loaded/unloaded, steady-state/transient): large poles are used in the start-up phase to accelerate response, small poles are switched in the steady-state phase to reduce errors, and a smooth attenuation function is used in the transition phase to achieve stable parameter transition, balancing the system’s dynamic response and steady-state accuracy. In addition, high-frequency square wave voltage signals are injected into the dq axes of the rotating coordinate system, and effective rotor position information is extracted by combining signal demodulation with ESO-PLL to realize decoupling of high-frequency response currents. Verification through MATLAB/Simulink simulation experiments shows that the improved strategy exhibits significant advantages in the low-speed range of 200–300 r/min: in the scenario where the speed transitions from 200 r/min to 300 r/min with sudden load changes, the position estimation curve of ESO-PLL basically overlaps with the actual curve, while the PI-PLL shows obvious deviations; in the start-up and speed switching phases, dynamic pole placement enables the motor to respond quickly without overshoot and no obvious speed fluctuations, whereas the traditional fixed-pole PI control has problems of response lag or overshoot. In conclusion, the “ESO-PLL + dynamic pole placement” cooperative control strategy proposed in this study effectively solves the problems of harmonic interference and load disturbance caused by high-frequency square wave injection in the low-speed range and significantly improves the accuracy and robustness of PMSM sensorless control. This strategy requires no additional hardware cost and achieves performance improvement only through algorithm optimization. It can be directly applied to PMSM control systems that require stable low-speed operation, providing a reliable solution for the promotion of sensorless control technology in low-speed precision fields. This paper presents adaptive sliding mode observers (A-SMOs) performing speed estimation for sensorless induction motor drives utilized in both industrial and electrical vehicle (EV) applications due to their computational simplicity. The fact that the constant switching gain (λ0) is used in conventional SMOs (C-SMOs) leads to the chattering problem, especially in low-speed regions. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes two different λ0 adaptation mechanisms based on fuzzy and curve fitting methods. To estimate stator stationary axis components of stator currents and rotor fluxes together with the rotor speed, the proposed A-SMOs only utilize the measured stator currents and voltages of the IM. Here, the difference only between the estimated and measured stator currents is determined as the sliding surface in the proposed A-SMOs. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy-based A-SMO (FA-SMO) and curve fitting-based A-SMO (CFA-SMO), they are compared with C-SMO in real-time experiments for different scenarios including wide speed range operations of IM with/without load torque changes. Moreover, the stator and rotor resistances as well as the magnetizing inductance variations are also examined in real-time experiments of the proposed methods and the conventional one. The estimation results demonstrate how positively the λ0 adaptations in FA-SMO and CFA-SMO affect the performance of C-SMO. Finally, two A-SMOs with improved performance are introduced and verified through real-time experiments. Full article

The paper describes an installation and procedure for evaluating the velocity profile for the airflow produced by the fan of the cleaning unit of a New Holland wheat combine harvester. The velocity profile is based on measurements taken at 52 points spread over the entire surface of the top and bottom sieves, for different speeds of the fan, different positions of the wind boards and different opening positions of the sieves. The experimental data obtained were graphically represented using the Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolation model and highlighted that the airflow generated by the fan at the upper screen level, in the longitudinal plane and, especially, in the transverse plane, is distributed unevenly, and depends on the fan rotor speed, the opening of the louvers of the two screens and the arrangement of the two deflectors. The correct adjustment of the cleaning unit and correct evaluation of the air velocity profile over the sieves result in the reduction in grain losses from the upper sieve due to grain flotation, reduction in the content of broken grains in the grain tank due to the reduction in the material flow from the tailing auger as well as reduction in the impurities content of the grain tank due to better separation of the material over the surface of the lower sieve. Mixed eccentricity faults in squirrel cage induction motors (SCIMs) are challenging to diagnose due to their subtle influence on the stator-current signal. Several research gaps remain in this field, including the limited investigation of fault severity levels and the scarcity of studies addressing fault detection under full-load conditions. Motivated by these gaps, this study proposes a diagnostic approach based on the variational mode decomposition (VMD) of the stator current. This paper proposes a diagnostic approach based on VMD of the stator current. The current signal is decomposed into intrinsic mode components, which are further separated into approximated and detailed signals. By focusing on the detailed signals and removing the fundamental frequency, the proposed algorithm highlights the spectral components associated with the mixed eccentricity. Experimental validation was carried out on a 1.5 kW SCIM connected directly to the power grid and tested under three loading levels (12.5%, 50%, and 100% of the rated load). In all nine experimental scenarios, the method successfully distinguished the healthy motor from faulty conditions with 20% and 30% mixed eccentricity severities. These results demonstrate that the proposed VMD-based method provides a reliable and quantitative tool for rotor fault diagnosis under varying load conditions. Full article

The robust stabilization of the attitude of quadrotors with respect to disturbance torques is a fundamental and crucial control problem in many unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications. For this problem, a control Lyapunov function (CLF)-based robust adaptive control was previously proposed by the authors, and its effectiveness was confirmed through numerical simulations. In this article, we tackle the experimental verification of this controller. We first construct a quadrotor testbed equipped with the self-developed flight controller. Then, we implement the proposed robust adaptive controller and perform flight experiments. According to the results of comparative experiments using a PID-type controller and a non-robust controller, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. Full article
