Swarm Intelligence (SI) algorithms were applied widely in solving complex optimization problems because they are simple, flexible, and efficient. The current paper proposes a new SI algorithm, which is based on the bird-like actions of swallows, which have highly synchronized behaviors of foraging and migration. The optimization algorithm (SWSO) makes use of these behaviors to boost the ability of exploration and exploitation in the optimization process. Unlike other birds, swallows are known to be so precise when performing fast directional alterations and making intricate aerial acrobatics during foraging. Moreover, the flight patterns of swallows are very efficient; they have extensive capabilities to transition between flapping and gliding with ease to save energy over long distances during migration. This allows instantaneous changes of wing shape variations to optimize performance in any number of flying conditions. The model used by the SWSO algorithm combines these biologically inspired flight dynamics into a new computational model that is aimed at enhancing search performance in rugged terrain. The design of the algorithm simulates the swallow’s social behavior and energy-saving behavior, converting it into exploration, exploitation, control mechanisms, and convergence control. In order to verify its effectiveness, (SWSO) is applied to many benchmark problems, such as unimodal, multimodal, fixed-dimension functions, and a benchmark CEC2019, which consists of some of the most widely used benchmark functions. Comparative tests are conducted against more than 30 metaheuristic algorithms that are regarded as state-of-the-art, developed so far, including PSO, MFO, WOA, GWO, and GA, among others. The measures of performance included best fitness, rate of convergence, robustness, and statistical significance. Moreover, the use of (SWSO) in solving real-life engineering design problems is used to prove (SWSO)’s practicality and generality. The results confirm that the proposed algorithm offers a competitive and reliable solution methodology, making it a valuable addition to the field of swarm-based optimization. Full article

The accurate classification of staple crops is of great significance for scientifically promoting food production. Crop classification methods based on deep learning models or medium/low-resolution images have been applied in plain areas. However, existing methods perform poorly in complex mountainous scenes with rugged terrain, diverse planting structures, and fragmented farmland. This study introduces the Complex Scene Crop Classification U-Net+ (CSCCU+), designed to improve staple crop classification accuracy in intricate landscapes by integrating supplementary spectral information through an additional branch input. CSCCU+ employs a multi-branch architecture comprising three distinct pathways: the primary branch, auxiliary branch, and supplementary branch. The model utilizes a multi-level feature fusion architecture, including layered integration via the Shallow Feature Fusion (SFF) and Deep Feature Fusion (DFF) modules, alongside a balance parameter for adaptive feature importance calibration. This design optimizes feature learning and enhances model performance. Experimental validation using GaoFen-2 (GF-2) imagery in Xifeng County, Guizhou Province, China, involved a dataset of 2000 image patches (256 × 256 pixels) spanning seven categories. The method achieved corn and rice classification accuracies of 89.16% and 88.32%, respectively, with a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 87.04%, outperforming comparative models (U-Net, DeeplabV3+, and CSCCU). This research paves the way for staple crop classification in complex land surfaces using high-resolution imagery, enabling accurate crop mapping and providing robust data support for smart agricultural applications. The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) applications is reshaping countless sectors and, in the process, exposing the limitations of existing connectivity solutions—especially in rugged regions like South America’s Andean highlands, where conventional infrastructure networks are scarce. To address this gap, this research introduces an automated system that captures uplink and downlink data from LoRaWAN nodes in real time. The system continuously monitors essential indicators—RSSI, SNR, transmit power, spreading factor, bandwidth, device speed, and packet interval—and stores them for later analysis. Thanks to its modular design, the system adapts easily to urban, semi-urban, and challenging rural topographies. Field trials show that our tool gathers reliable performance data while cutting the time and manual effort typical of traditional measurement campaigns. These results streamline IoT roll-outs in demanding terrain and lay the foundation for scalable LoRaWAN deployments throughout the Andean region. Full article

With the application of tracked mobile robots in detection and rescue, how to improve their stability and trafficability has become the research focus. In order to improve the driving ability and trafficability of tracked mobile robots in rugged terrain, this paper proposes a new type of tracked mobile robot using passive suspension. By adding a connecting rod differential mechanism between the left and right track mechanisms, the contact stability between the track and terrain is enhanced. The kinematics model and attitude relationship of the suspension are analyzed and established, and the rationality of the passive suspension scheme is verified by dynamic simulation. The simulation results show that the tracked robot with passive suspension shows good obstacle surmounting performance, but there will be a heading deflection problem. Therefore, a track drive speed of the driving state compensation control is proposed based on the driving scene, which can effectively solve the problem of slip and heading deflection. Through the field test of the robot prototype, the effectiveness of the suspension scheme and control system is verified, which provides a useful reference for the scheme design and performance improvement of the tracked mobile robot in complex field scenes. Hyperspectral remote sensing plays a crucial role in guiding and supporting various mineral prospecting activities. Combined with artificial intelligence, hyperspectral remote sensing technology becomes a powerful and versatile tool for a wide range of mineral exploration activities. This study investigates the effectiveness of ensemble learning (EL) algorithms for lithological classification and mineral exploration using EnMAP hyperspectral imagery (HSI) in a semi-arid region. The Moroccan Anti-Atlas mountainous region is known for its complex geology, high mineral potential and rugged terrain, making it a challenging for mineral exploration. This research applies core and heterogeneous ensemble learning methods, i.e., boosting, stacking, voting, bagging, blending, and weighting to improve the accuracy and robustness of lithological classification and mapping in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas mountainous region. Several state-of-the-art models, including support vector machines (SVMs), random forests (RFs), k-nearest neighbors (k-NNs), multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs), extra trees (ETs) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), were evaluated and used as individual and ensemble classifiers. The results show that the EL methods clearly outperform (single) base classifiers. The potential of EL methods to improve the accuracy of HSI-based classification is emphasized by an optimal blending model that achieves the highest overall accuracy (96.69%). The heterogeneous EL models exhibit better generalization ability than the baseline (single) ML models in lithological classification. The current study contributes to a more reliable assessment of resources in mountainous and semi-arid regions by providing accurate delineation of lithological units for mineral exploration objectives. The Mayanghe National Nature Reserve, a key habitat for the endangered François’ langur (Trachypithecus francoisi), faces significant anthropogenic disturbances, including extensive distribution of croplands, roads, and settlements. These human-modified features are predominantly concentrated at elevations between 500 and 800 m and on slopes of 10–20°, which notably overlap with the core elevation range utilized by François’ langur. Spatial analysis revealed that langurs primarily occupy areas within the 500–800 m elevation band, which comprises only 33% of the reserve but hosts a high density of human infrastructure—including approximately 4468 residential buildings and the majority of cropland and road networks. Despite slopes >60° representing just 18.52% of the area, langur habitat utilization peaked in these steep regions (exceeding 85.71%), indicating a strong preference for rugged karst terrain, likely due to reduced human interference. Habitat type analysis showed a clear preference for evergreen broadleaf forests (covering 37.19% of utilized areas), followed by shrublands. Landscape pattern metrics revealed high habitat fragmentation, with 457 discrete habitat patches and broadleaf forests displaying the highest edge density and total edge length. Connectivity analyses indicated that distribution areas exhibit a more continuous and aggregated habitat configuration than control areas. These results underscore François’ langur’s reliance on steep, forested karst habitats and highlight the urgent need to mitigate human-induced fragmentation in key elevation and slope zones to ensure the species’ long-term survival. Topographic slope is a key parameter for characterizing landscape geomorphology. The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) offers high-resolution along-track slopes based on the ground profiles generated by dense signal photons. However, the across-track slopes are typically derived using the ground photon geolocations from the weak-beam and strong-beam pair, limiting the retrieval accuracy and losing valid results over rugged terrains. The goal of this study is to propose a new method to derive the across-track slope merely using single-track photon data of a strong beam based on the theoretical formula of the received signal pulse width. Based on the ICESat-2 photon data over the Walker Lake area, the specific purposes are to (1) extract the along-track slope and surface roughness from the signal photon data on the ground; (2) generate an elevation frequency histogram (EFH) and calculate its root mean square (RMS) width; and (3) derive the across-track slope from the RMS width of the EFH and evaluate the retrieval accuracy against the across-track slope from the ICESat-2 product and plane fitting method. The results show that the mean absolute error (MAE) obtained by our method is 11.45°, which is comparable to the ICESat-2 method (11.61°) and the plane fitting method (12.51°). Our method produces the least invalid data proportion of ~2.5%, significantly outperforming both the plane fitting method (10.29%) and the ICESat-2 method (32.32%). Specifically, when the reference across-track slope exceeds 30°, our method can consistently yield the optimal across-track slopes, where the absolute median, inter quartile range, and whisker range of the across-track slope residuals have reductions greater than 4.44°, 1.31°, and 0.10°, respectively. Overall, our method is well-suited for the across-track slope estimation over rugged terrains and can provide higher-precision, higher-resolution, and more valid across-track slopes. Full article

Classifying land cover in mountainous areas has always been challenging due to the high diversity of ecosystems and the complexity of the spectral–temporal–spatial relationships caused by the rugged terrain. This paper introduces multi-year synthesized phenology data to improve land cover classification in these regions. Using the Shennongjia Forestry District in Hubei Province, China, as a case study, we investigate how incorporating multi-year synthesized phenology data enhances the accuracy of land cover classification with single-temporal and multi-temporal remote sensing imagery, as well as how it aids in identifying different vegetation types in shaded areas of the mountains. The research results indicate that incorporating multi-year synthesized phenology data significantly improves the accuracy of land cover classification for single summer imagery, single autumn imagery, multi-temporal summer–autumn imagery, and mountain shadow areas. The Kappa coefficient (Kappa) increased by 1.57% to 9.93%, while overall accuracy (OA) improved by 1.4% to 8.75%. Notably, the improvement in classification accuracy was most pronounced for single summer imagery. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that, in the absence of terrain data, multi-year synthesized phenology data provide even greater enhancements in land cover classification accuracy using remote sensing imagery. Most existing precipitation data fusion methods rely on reliable precipitation values, such as those observed from ground-based rain gauges, to correct the satellite precipitation estimates (SPEs) that often involve systematic biases. However, such reliable data are rarely available in many regions of the world, especially in rugged terrain and hostile regions, rendering the correction suboptimal. To address this limitation, we propose a novel data fusion method—Triple Collocation Spatial Autoregression under Dirichlet distribution (TCSpAR-Dirichlet)—which eliminates the need for reliable data while still having the capability to effectively capture true precipitation patterns. The key idea in our method is using the variance of the precipitation estimates at each grid location obtained from each satellite to optimally leverage the associated satellite’s weight in data fusion, then characterizing the weights on all locations by a spatial autoregression model, and finally using the fitted weights to fuse the multi-sourced SPEs at all grid locations. We apply this method to SPEs in Nepal, which does not have ground gauges in many of its mountainous areas, to collect reliable precipitation data, to produce a fused precipitation dataset with uniform spatial coverage and high measurement accuracy. Land surface temperature (LST) is an important parameter in the surface system with drastic variation in spatial and temporal domains. The protection of the ecological environment in mountainous areas and the monitoring of natural disasters require the support of surface temperature data with high spatiotemporal resolution. LST downscaling is an effective method to improve the spatial and temporal resolution of remote sensing LST data. However, at present, the LST downscaling research mainly focuses on plain and urban areas, while the area of rugged terrain is less studied, and the accuracy of LST in rugged terrain is lower than in plain and urban areas. In the few studies that discuss auxiliary parameters for LST downscaling in rugged terrain, only elevation is considered as an auxiliary parameter. In this study, we selected parameters that have evident correlation with LST as potential auxiliary factors and discussed the benefits of adding shortwave radiation to the LST downscaling process. We chose four scene images in the Beijing suburbs and the Loess Plateau and conducted the LST downscaling experiments. In this study, we used the Taylor expansion method for LST downscaling. We selected Landsat 8 and MODSI LST data as fine and coarse study datasets, respectively. The results show that the accuracy of LST downscaling in rugged terrain areas can be improved by using elevation and shortwave radiation as auxiliary factors, and the benefits of shortwave radiation is independent of that of elevation. Therefore, it is suggested that these two parameters be simultaneously used to achieve the best LST downscaling result over rugged terrain areas. Full article

The lower Yarlung Zangbo River Basin’s Great Bend region, characterized by extreme topography and intense orographic precipitation processes, presents significant challenges for accurate precipitation estimation using reanalysis products. Therefore, this study evaluates four widely used products (ERA5-Land, MSWEP, CMA, and TPMFD) against station observations (2014–2022) in this critical area. Performance was rigorously assessed using correlation analysis, error metrics (RMSE, MAE, RBIAS), and spatial regression. The region exhibits strong seasonality, with 62.1% of annual rainfall occurring during the monsoon (June-October). Results indicate TPMFD performed best overall, capturing spatiotemporal patterns effectively (correlation coefficients 0.6–0.8, low RBIAS). Conversely, ERA5-Land significantly overestimated precipitation, particularly in rugged northeast areas, suggesting poor representation of orographic effects. MSWEP and CMA underestimated rainfall with variable temporal consistency. Topographic analysis confirmed slope, aspect, and longitude strongly control precipitation distribution, aligning with classical orographic mechanisms (e.g., windward enhancement, lee-side rain shadows) and monsoonal moisture transport. Spatial regression revealed terrain features explain 15.4% of flood-season variation. TPMFD most accurately captured these terrain-precipitation relationships. Consequently, findings underscore the necessity for terrain-sensitive calibration and data fusion strategies in mountainous regions to improve precipitation products and hydrological modeling under orographic influence. Sediment fingerprinting was utilized to identify potential hotspots of soil erosion and sediment transport pathways in the Nile Nyabarongo Upper Catchment (NNYU) in Rwanda, where rivers and reservoirs are suffering from alarmingly high levels of sedimentation. Sediment fingerprinting is a practical approach used to identify erosional hotspots and sediment transport processes in highly mountainous regions undergoing swift land use transformation. This technique involves a statistical comparison of the elemental composition of suspended sediments in river water with the elemental composition of soils belonging to different geological formations present in the catchment, thereby determining the sources of the suspended sediment. Suspended sediments were sampled five times over dry and wet seasons in all major headwater tributaries, as well as the main river channel, and compared with soils from respective delineated watersheds. Elemental composition was obtained using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and elements were chosen that could reliably distinguish between the various geological types. The final results indicate different levels of sediment contribution from different geological types. A three-level intervention priority system was devised, with Level 1 indicating the areas with the most serious erosion. Potential sources were located on an administrative map, with the highest likely erosion over the study period (Level 1) occurring in Kabuga cell in the Mwogo sub-catchment, Nganzo and Nyamirama cells in the Nyagako sub-catchment and Kanyana cell in the NNYU downstream sub-catchment. This map enables the pinpointing of site visits in an extensive and rugged terrain to verify the areas and causes of erosion and the pathways of sediment transport. Sediment concentrations (mg L−1) were the highest in the Secoko and Satinsyi tributaries. The composition of suspended sediment was seen to be temporally and spatially dynamic at each sampling point, suggesting the need for an adequate number of sampling locations to identify erosion hotspots in a large mountainous watershed. Apart from prioritizing rehabilitation locations, the detailed understanding of critical zone soil–land cover–climate processes is an important input for developing region-specific watershed management and policy guidelines. Lunar orbiter image matching is a critical process for achieving high-precision lunar mapping, positioning, and navigation. However, with the Moon’s weak-texture surface and rugged terrain, lunar orbiter images generally suffer from inconsistent lighting conditions and exhibit varying degrees of non-linear intensity distortion, which pose significant challenges to image traditional matching. This paper presents a robust feature matching method based on crater neighborhood structure, which is particularly robust to changes in illumination. The method integrates deep-learning based crater detection, Crater Neighborhood Structure features (CNSFs) construction, CNSF similarity-based matching, and outlier removal. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we created an evaluation dataset, comprising Multi-illumination Lunar Orbiter Images (MiLOIs) from different latitudes (a total of 321 image pairs). And comparative experiments have been conducted using the proposed method and state-of-the-art image matching methods. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach exhibits greater robustness and accuracy against variations in illumination. Full article

Hexapod robots that use external sensors to sense the environment are susceptible to factors such as light intensity or foggy weather. This effect leads to a drastic decrease in the motility of the hexapod robot. This paper proposes a motion control strategy for a blind hexapod robot. The hexapod robot is symmetrical and its environmental sensing capability is obtained by collecting proprioceptive signals from internal sensors, allowing it to pass through rugged terrain without the need for external sensors. The motion gait of the hexapod robot is generated by a central pattern generator (CPG) network constructed by Hopf oscillators. This gait is a periodic gait controlled by specific parameters given in advance. A policy network is trained in the target terrain using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The trained policy network is able to fine-tune specific parameters by acquiring information about the current terrain. Thus, an adaptive gait is obtained. The experimental results show that the adaptive gait enables the hexapod robot to stably traverse various complex terrains. Full article

Hydraulic excavators operate in harsh environments where direct measurement of actuator chamber pressures and boom displacement is often unreliable or infeasible. This study presents a novel control strategy that estimates actuator chamber pressures from work port pressures using differential equations, eliminating the need for direct pressure or position sensors. A fuzzy logic-based proportional–derivative (PD) controller is developed to mitigate boom oscillations, particularly under high-inertia load conditions and variable operator inputs. The controller dynamically adjusts gains through fuzzy logic-based gain scheduling, enhancing adaptability across a wide range of operating conditions. The proposed method addresses the limitations of classical PID controllers, which struggle with the nonlinearities, parameter uncertainties, and instability introduced by counterbalance valves and pressure-compensated proportional valves. Experimental data is used to design fuzzy rules and membership functions, ensuring robust performance. Simulation and full-scale experimental validation demonstrate that the fuzzy PD controller significantly reduces pressure overshoot (by 23% during extension and 32% during retraction) and decreases settling time (by 31.23% and 28%, respectively) compared to conventional systems. Frequency-domain stability analysis confirms exponential stability and improved damping characteristics. The proposed control scheme enhances system reliability and safety, making it ideal for excavators operating in remote or rugged terrains where conventional sensor-based systems may fail. This approach is generalizable and does not require modifications to the existing hydraulic circuit, offering a practical and scalable solution for modern hydraulic machinery. Full article
