With the 2030 deadline for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approaching, there is a growing global urgency to identify innovative, scalable, and inclusive AI-based or AI-enabled solutions capable of accelerating progress across sectors. Yet the benefits of AI remain unevenly distributed, particularly in low-resource settings where limited infrastructure, cost barriers, and unequal access to skills constrain adoption. This paper explores how Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML)—a low-power, low-cost edge AI paradigm—offers a concrete technological pathway aligned with the principles of Frugal AI, providing accessible, energy-efficient, and context-adapted tools for sustainable development. We evaluate how participatory citizen science, when combined with TinyML, enables communities to co-create AI applications that address locally defined challenges in environmental monitoring, agriculture, and public health. Drawing on early outcomes from workshops, collaborative projects, and innovation competitions, the paper examines how TinyML-enabled participatory approaches cultivate technical skills, stimulate grassroots entrepreneurship, and generate prototypes suited to low-resource environments. Using a qualitative multiple-case study of 50 participatory TinyML initiatives across 22 countries, we analyse how frugal edge-AI practices support skills formation, prototype development, and early entrepreneurial engagement. The analysis identifies the pedagogical, technical, and institutional frameworks that support successful participatory AI initiatives, emphasizing open educational resources, cross-sector partnerships, and community-driven problem formulation. We introduce the Frugal Edge AI Lean Canvas to help innovators identify novelty, ethical implications, and measurable impact. TinyML-based participatory innovation offers a promising route for accelerating SDG progress by expanding who can create, deploy, and benefit from AI. Full article

Social and emotional learning (SEL) has become increasingly central to educational policy and lifelong development, while advances in robotics have opened new possibilities for supporting socio-emotional competencies through human–robot interaction. Despite the rapid growth of robot-assisted SEL research, this field remains fragmented, with limited understanding of its intellectual structure, thematic foci, and evolution. To address this gap, this study conducted a scientometric analysis of 241 publications indexed in Web of Science using bibliometric methods. Results indicate a steady growth trajectory, with research concentrated in a small number of core countries driving international collaboration. Influential publications and co-citation patterns reveal a strong foundation in autism-related interventions and child-centered social skill development. Thematic mapping shows that motor themes are dominated by soft skills, autism, and interaction design, while emotion recognition and affective computing form technically mature but specialized streams. Foundational concepts such as human–robot interaction and artificial intelligence remain central yet theoretically evolving. Emerging links between robotics, STEM, and project-based learning suggest ongoing pedagogical expansion. This study maps the intellectual and thematic structure of robot-assisted SEL, showing how robots are emerging as mediational agents in hybrid learning systems while revealing uneven integration and misalignments between technological capabilities and pedagogical foundations. Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping higher education by changing how students access knowledge, complete academic tasks and engage in innovation. At the same time, unequal access to AI-related competencies may reproduce existing educational inequalities, which raises important concerns for Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). Drawing on cultural capital theory and research on digital inequality, this study examines whether family cultural capital is associated with university students’ innovative capacity through AI literacy. In this study, AI literacy is defined as students’ ability to understand, evaluate and use AI critically and responsibly across different contexts. Survey data were collected from 1020 Chinese university students and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with split-sample validation. The results indicated that family cultural capital remained significantly associated with innovative capacity although its two dimensions operated differently. Cultural resources had a significant direct effect on innovative capacity and also positively predicted technical application skills but not awareness of the social impact of AI. Embodied cultural capital did not have a significant direct effect on innovative capacity, but its total effect was significant, and it positively predicted both dimensions of AI literacy. Mediation analysis further showed that technical application skills significantly mediated the relationship between both dimensions of family cultural capital and innovative capacity, whereas awareness of the social impact of AI did not show a significant mediating effect. These findings suggest that family cultural capital continues to matter in the AI era not only through direct advantage but also through its conversion into AI-related competencies. The study highlights the need for higher education institutions to strengthen equitable support for practical AI capability development in order to promote inclusive innovation and advance SDG 4. This study addresses the growing necessity to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) competency and soft skills jointly influence organizational innovation and performance in the era of digital transformation. Despite the rapid adoption of AI technologies across industries, organizations continue to face significant challenges in effectively integrating technical AI capabilities with essential human-centric soft skills such as communication, adaptability, and leadership. This gap often limits the realization of AI-driven value and sustainable competitive advantage. The primary challenge in this research area is the lack of comprehensive models that simultaneously examine AI competency and soft skills within a unified framework, particularly in emerging economies where digital maturity varies widely. Existing studies tend to focus either on technical competencies or behavioral factors in isolation, leading to fragmented insights. To address these challenges, this study proposes a novel integrated research model that examines the combined effects of AI competency and soft skills on innovation outcomes and organizational performance. The model is empirically validated using structural equation modeling (SEM), providing robust evidence of the interrelationships among key constructs. The findings reveal that both AI competency and soft skills significantly contribute to innovation capability, which in turn enhances organizational performance. The study offers important theoretical and practical implications by bridging the gap between technical and human dimensions of AI adoption, thereby providing a more holistic understanding of digital transformation success. This study examines the interplay among ICT skills, perceptions of employability, and entrepreneurial intention among university students, focusing on how generic and scarce ICT competencies influence their confidence in employment opportunities and their inclination toward entrepreneurial intentions. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the study explores how digital competencies shape entrepreneurial attitudes, perceived feasibility, and behavioural readiness. A quantitative research approach was adopted, and data were collected using a convenience sampling method from 117 university students enrolled in ICT-related programmes. A reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and chi-square tests were used to examine the relationships among ICT skills, employability perceptions, and entrepreneurial constructs. Findings reveal that students possess strong generic ICT skills and high self-efficacy, suggesting confidence in their general capabilities and labour market readiness. However, scarce ICT skills were found to be unevenly distributed across departments and campuses, indicating disparities in access to advanced technical training. Regression results show that both generic ICT skills (β = 0.27, p < 0.01) and scarce ICT skills (β = 0.34, p < 0.001) significantly predict employability (R2 = 0.29), while generic (β = 0.29, p < 0.01) and scarce ICT skills (β = 0.46, p < 0.001) significantly influence perceived feasibility (R2 = 0.41). Furthermore, employability (β = 0.31, p < 0.01) and perceived feasibility (β = 0.25, p < 0.05) significantly predict entrepreneurial intention (R2 = 0.27). The results also show strong entrepreneurial desirability among students, yet perceived feasibility remains comparatively low, highlighting a gap between entrepreneurial aspiration and perceived capability. Importantly, advanced ICT competencies strengthen students’ confidence in their ability to pursue entrepreneurial activities. The study concludes that strengthening scarce ICT competencies, experiential entrepreneurship education, and industry collaboration within higher education institutions is essential for enhancing graduate employability and entrepreneurial potential in South Africa. Universities are increasingly expected to bridge the gap between higher education, skills development, and graduate employability, yet evidence-based approaches to curriculum–labour market alignment remain limited in Communication Studies. This study examines which ESCO-mapped occupational profiles and transversal competencies are represented in official curricula of leading Spanish Communication programmes (RQ1), how demand for communication-related occupations evolved in Spain over 2018–2023 (RQ2), and where the most salient alignment gaps emerge to inform curriculum redesign (RQ3). We used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design combining documentary analysis of programme verification reports and national disciplinary documentation, an ESCO-based mapping of curricular profiles, and labour-market intelligence from 2,701,503 job postings (2018–2023) mapped to ESCO to analyse demand dynamics, volatility, and skill patterns. Results show strong curricular convergence around a shared core of ESCO profiles (71.8% of identified codes shared across institutions) alongside institution-specific specialisations (28.2%). Labour demand fluctuated markedly across the period and exhibited heterogeneous volatility by occupation, and transversal competency patterns differed significantly across professional groupings, supporting segment-specific interpretations of alignment and mismatch. Overall, ESCO combined with job-posting analytics provides a replicable framework for continuous curriculum calibration and employability-oriented programme redesign, particularly for hybrid profiles that integrate technical, analytical, relational, and ethically grounded capabilities. Background/Objectives: The success of cardiopulmonary resuscitation relies on both technical and non-technical skills. Cognitive aids, such as checklists, have been shown to enhance technical performance in emergencies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capabilities of a cognitive aid app (CA-App) in improving non-technical skills. Methods: In this single-centre randomised controlled trial, 62 teams, each consisting of an experienced physician and a specialised nurse, were randomised either to CA-App or control (No-App) groups performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The study was registered with the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS) on 4 November 2025 (DRKS00038336). The primary outcome was the team leader’s performance in non-technical skills, assessed via the validated Team Emergency Assessment Measure (TEAM™) questionnaire by two raters. Secondary analyses examined TEAM™ subdomains (leadership, teamwork, task management) and the correlation between app usage duration and performance. Results: 62 out of 67 teams were finally randomised, with 31 teams in each group. The CA-App group demonstrated a marginally elevated median TEAM™ total score (83.33%) in comparison to the control group (79.33%), although this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.190). The leadership subgroup score was significantly higher in the app group (p = 0.006). There was no significant correlation between the time spent using the app and improved team performance (r = 0.260, p = 0.166). Conclusions: The CA-App demonstrated potential for improving leadership skills, a critical component of non-technical skills in emergency scenarios. These findings highlight the potential capability of cognitive aids to improve non-technical skills and the need for further research to explore their optimal design and integration into clinical practice to enhance team performance and patient safety. Background: Global immunization programs continue to rely on needle-based injections despite persistent concerns regarding sharps disposal, accidental injuries, and the technical skill required for accurate intradermal administration. Needle-free jet injectors (NFJIs) are an alternative delivery method in which narrow, high-velocity liquid jets penetrate the skin without a needle. Contemporary designs, ranging from single-use disposable-syringe injectors to digitally controlled electromechanical devices, address historical safety issues and meet current WHO and FDA device expectations. Methods: Evidence from engineering analyses, preclinical modeling, and clinical trials was reviewed to characterize how jet velocity, nozzle structure, and formulation rheology influence skin penetration and drug dispersion. Published vaccine studies were examined for antibody responses, seroconversion, and reactogenicity compared with needle–syringe injection. Field vaccination campaign data from national campaigns and operational reports were evaluated to describe implementation steps, acceptability, and implementation constraints. Results: Published studies evaluating vaccines, including inactivated influenza, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, and measles, report antibody titers and seroconversion rates after NFJI administration that are comparable to those achieved with conventional intramuscular or intradermal needle injection. Needle-free delivery was associated with operational advantages in several immunization programs, including reduced sharps waste and improved vaccination rate during high-volume immunization campaigns. Local and systemic reactogenicity follows expected patterns, with slightly higher injection-site responses in some NFJI studies. Imaging and mechanical data confirm that jet performance depends on nozzle geometry and controlled pressure pulses. At the same time, formulation stability remains a critical determinant of successful jet-based vaccine administration, particularly for protein antigens, adjuvanted formulations, and emerging mRNA vaccines that may experience transient shear stress during high-velocity injection. Evidence from vaccination campaigns further indicates that needle-free jet injectors reduce sharps waste, simplify vaccine handling and administration procedures, and support rapid vaccine delivery in large-scale immunization programs. Conclusions: Needle-free jet injectors are a practical alternative to traditional needle-based injections for some vaccines. Their main benefits include enabling intradermal dose-sparing strategies, reducing reliance on sharps disposal methods, and enabling the efficient vaccination of large groups without compromising immunogenicity. Future research should define the physicochemical stability limits of biologic formulations subjected to jet injection and evaluate digitally controlled injectors capable of precise pressure modulation and adjustable delivery parameters. In addition, needle-free jet injection eliminates needle penetration and sharps handling, which may reduce needle-associated anxiety and improve vaccine acceptability among individuals with needle aversion. Digital transformation reshapes firms into more digital, data-driven, and customer-centric organizations. Because it often supports innovation, firms are widely expected to benefit from higher performance and productivity. However, it remains unclear whether higher national levels of digital integration translate into higher aggregate enterprise productivity. This study adopts a socio-technical and ecosystem perspective to examine the relationship between digital technology integration and enterprise labor productivity across the 27 EU member states, while also considering the role of key ecosystem enablers. A balanced country-year panel of data (N = 162) was constructed from Eurostat Structural Business Statistics on the apparent labor productivity of total enterprises, together with Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) indicators on the integration of digital technology, human capital, connectivity, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, covering the period from 2017 to 2022. To this end, fixed-effects regression models were estimated using robust standard errors clustered by country and combined with correlated random effects (CRE/Mundlak) decomposition. This methodological approach was adopted to distinguish short-run within-country dynamics from persistent between-country differences. The study contributes to ecosystem-level DESI research by using this distinction to assess how country-level digital integration is associated with enterprise productivity. The fixed-effects results provide no evidence that year-to-year changes in digital technology integration, on their own, are associated with higher enterprise productivity. Additionally, no statistically significant interaction effect was observed with either human capital or digital connectivity. By contrast, GDP per capita was found to be a robust positive predictor of enterprise productivity. The CRE/Mundlak results indicate that the majority of between-country productivity differences are attributable to differences in economic development. Furthermore, there is evidence of a positive association between the average level of digital technology integration and human capital. Taken together, these findings suggest that national digital technology integration reflects business environment conditions at the ecosystem level. While it may create opportunities for enterprise business model innovation, its productivity implications are more likely to emerge gradually through stronger absorptive capacity and complementary capabilities. Consequently, the study suggests that enterprise digital transformation policies should be aligned with investments in digital skills and broadband infrastructure. These policies should also support process redesign, greater interoperability, and the implementation of AI-enabled technologies. Full article

The rapid industrialization envisioned in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 requires that new small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) factories be digitally capable from inception. This article proposes a policy framework that establishes a minimum Industry 4.0 maturity threshold as a condition for licensing new SME manufacturing facilities. Building upon international best practices and Saudi Arabia’s specific context, the article specifies minimum technical and organizational requirements across three dimensions: process, technology, and organization. Core elements include basic automation, industrial connectivity, vertical and horizontal integration, data-driven decision-making, workforce digital literacy, and leadership commitment to transformation. The rationale centers on cost efficiency, global competitiveness, and alignment with national goals. Recognizing common barriers such as limited skills, high upfront costs, and cybersecurity risks, the article outlines mitigation strategies including government incentives, public–private partnerships, and regulatory support. The framework is conceptual in nature and intended to inform pilot implementation and subsequent empirical evaluation. Establishing clear digital standards at the factory design stage can support more sustainable and scalable growth for Saudi SMEs while strengthening their readiness for participation in global Industry 4.0 ecosystems. The textile industry of Pakistan plays a vital role in the national economy; however, it faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable and circular practices. The circular economy (CE) approach minimizes waste and enhances resource efficiency. However, prior studies have focused on technical and legislative elements of CE adoption, while eco-capability remains understudied in developing economies. This study investigates the role of green skills development (GSD), employee training on CE (ETCE), and employee proactive behavior (EPB) in enhancing circular economy performance (CEP) in Pakistan’s textile sector, supported by the Resource-Based View theory. Using a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design, primary data were collected from 215 middle-to-top-level employees working in textile manufacturing organizations across Pakistan through a structured five-point Likert scale questionnaire. Measurement and structural models were examined using PLS-SEM to assess reliability, and validity, and model relationships. Results indicate that GSD (β = 0.431, t = 5.846) and ETCE (β = 0.357, t = 4.728) significantly enhance CEP, emphasizing the importance of technical skills and structural training. EPB, however, showed no significant effect (β = −0.008, t = 0.080), indicating that individual initiative alone is insufficient. The finding suggested that formal skill development and systemic CE training are critical for improving sustainable performance and advancing UN SDGs 8 and 12 in Pakistan’s textile industry. Considering the escalating challenges in ecological environmental protection and the difficulties faced by forest farmers in enhancing livelihood capital in ecologically vulnerable regions, a thorough examination of the impact of capabilities and risk perception on the livelihood resilience of forest farmers can serve as a reference for mitigating pressures on ecological conservation and addressing the enhancement of livelihood capital in similar typical ecologically vulnerable regions. This study utilized micro-level survey data and the Entropy Method to assess the livelihood resilience of forest farmers in an ecologically fragile region. An ordered logit model and a mediating effect model were employed to experimentally examine the influence of capabilities and risk perception on resilience. The results demonstrate that (1) the livelihood resilience of forest farmers exhibits a multi-dimensional, hierarchical condition; (2) capabilities exert a substantial positive influence on livelihood resilience, while risk perception has a considerable negative effect; and (3) capabilities affect the livelihood resilience of forest farmers by mitigating their risk perception. This paper concludes that, for the region under study, internal efforts should be undertaken to enhance forest farmers’ capabilities by increasing their income levels, strengthening their information acquisition skills, and promoting their participation in practical forestry training. The forest product market system must be enhanced externally, and technical thresholds reduced to alleviate perceptions of market volatility and natural disaster risks, ultimately improving livelihood resilience. There has been an increasing need to manage the water, energy, and food (WEF) Nexus in an integrated and sustainable way using Industry 4.0 (4IR) technologies. While 4IR technologies can significantly improve resource management and sustainability in the Nexus, their uptake across the WEF Nexus has been uneven due to institutional fragmentation and limited digital capability. This study assessed a multi-level human capital framework developed to facilitate the structured integration of 4IR technologies into the WEF Nexus. The study leveraged human capital theory and Strategic Human Resource Management to frame capability development as a multi-level process. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, initially surveying 262 professionals in the WEF Nexus to assess essential skill capabilities. This was followed by a two-round Delphi procedure involving 12 experts to refine and validate the multi-level framework. The findings reveal that digital transformation in the WEF Nexus is dependent on the synchronisation of national policy frameworks, organisational learning cultures, and individual skill sets. These levels do not work as separate enablers; instead, they work together as an integrated capacity ecosystem in which misalignment at any point will hinder the effective integration of 4IR technologies. The validated framework provides a systematic approach to understanding the interplay of human capital processes within socio-technical systems and provides a structured approach for designing comprehensive strategies that strengthen digital readiness across sectors. The study advocates for a system-embedded human capital (SEHC) approach and contributes to ongoing discussions on innovation in the public sector by highlighting the systemic nature of human capital development in sustainability- and resource-critical sectors. Emerging digital technologies, including immersive environments (VR/AR/XR) and Vision–Language Models (VLMs), have the potential to reshape digital pathology and medical imaging. While immersive tools can enhance spatial visualization and procedural training, VLM-based copilots offer cognitive and workflow support. Their combined impact on cytopathology remains largely conceptual and preclinical. This Conceptual Exploratory Narrative Review (CENR) examines how immersive technologies and VLM-based copilots may jointly influence cytopathologists’ professional workflow, training, and diagnostic processes, introducing the notion of the “augmented cytopathologist.” A structured exploratory approach integrated peer-reviewed literature, position papers, preprints, gray literature (technical reports, white papers, conference abstracts, blogs), and cross-disciplinary perspectives. Database searches (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus) confirmed a limited number of studies addressing immersive or AI-assisted cytopathology imaging. Thematic analysis focused on four conceptual dimensions: (1) technological capabilities and maturity; (2) workflow and educational applications; (3) professional implications and cytopathologist role; and (4) responsible use of LLMs and VLMs as supportive tools. This approach emphasizes interpretation of emerging trends over aggregation of empirical data, enabling conceptual synthesis of early-stage implementations and perspectives in the field. Immersive technologies facilitate three-dimensional visualization, procedural skill development, and collaborative engagement, whereas VLMs support report generation, literature retrieval, and decision guidance. Together, they offer a synergistic model for perceptual and cognitive augmentation. Key challenges include technical maturity, interoperability, workflow integration, regulatory compliance, and ethical oversight. Figures illustrate representative examples of (1) remote collaborative immersive evaluation and (2) integration of immersive visualization with VLM-based copilots, highlighting potential applications in training and workflow support. The CENR underscores the potential of combining immersive tools and AI copilots to support cytopathology, particularly for education, workflow efficiency, and cognitive augmentation. Adoption should be incremental and carefully governed, emphasizing augmentative rather than transformative use. Future research should focus on clinical validation, scalable integration, and regulatory and ethical frameworks to realize the concept of the augmented cytopathologist in practice. Full article

Environmental education awareness (EEA) often fails to translate into confident environmental action, representing a critical knowledge–action gap in sustainability education. This study investigated whether digital citizenship mediates the relationship between EEA and self-efficacy among university students. A cross-sectional design was employed with 879 Egyptian university students from Al-Azhar University. Participants completed validated instruments measuring EEA, digital citizenship competencies (including internet political activism, technical skills, critical perspectives, and networking agency), and general self-efficacy. Mediation analysis using Hayes’ PROCESS macro revealed that digital citizenship significantly partially mediated the relationship between environmental awareness and self-efficacy, accounting for 21.9% of the total effect. Environmental awareness directly predicted self-efficacy (β = 0.590) and indirectly through digital citizenship (β = 0.166). These findings demonstrate that digital competencies serve as “smart tools” enabling students to transform ecological knowledge into confident environmental agency. The results underscore the necessity of integrating digital citizenship training within environmental curricula to cultivate climate-literate, digitally empowered citizens capable of meaningful contributions to global sustainability and climate action initiatives.
