Assessing Fault Slip Probability and Controlling Factors in Shale Gas Hydraulic Fracturing

Fault slips induced by hydraulic fracturing are the primary mechanism of casing de-formation during deep shale gas development in Sichuan’s Luzhou Block, where de-formation rates reach 51% and severely compromise productivity. To address a critical gap in existing research on quantitative risk assessment systems, we developed a probabilistic model integrating pore pressure evolution dynamics with Monte Carlo simulations to quantify slip risks. The model incorporates key operational parameters (pumping pressure, rate, and duration) and geological factors (fault friction coefficient, strike/dip angles, and horizontal stress difference) validated through field data, showing >90% slip probability in 60% of deformed well intervals. The results demonstrate that prolonged high-intensity fracturing increases slip probability by 32% under 80–100 MPa pressure surges. Meanwhile, an increase in the friction coefficient from 0.40 to 0.80 reduces slip probability by 6.4% through elevated critical pore pressure. Fault geometry exhibits coupling effects: the risk of low-dip faults reaches its peak when strike parallels the maximum horizontal stress, whereas high-dip faults show a bimodal high-risk distribution at strike angles of 60–120°; here, the horizontal stress difference is directly proportional to the slip probability. We propose optimizing fracturing parameters, controlling operation duration, and avoiding high-risk fault geometries as mitigation strategies, providing a scientific foundation for enhancing the safety and efficiency of shale gas development. Tires are composed of various rubber polymers and reinforcing carcasses, and their wet skid resistance is influenced by the coupled effects of multiple factors. The braking force coefficient (BFC) is the primary performance indicator for evaluating tire wet skid resistance. This study proposes a novel method for evaluating the BFC of tires by integrating laboratory-simulated wet road tests with finite element simulations. A 295/60R22.5 all-steel radial tire was selected as the test object, and the simulation results showed good agreement with the experimental data, with a BFC error of 7.14%. This consistency confirms the reliability and accuracy of the proposed model in predicting tire wet grip performance. This study also investigated the effects of different working conditions of the tested tire on the BFC. The results showed that the wet grip performance of the tire on wet concrete surfaces was significantly lower than that on wet asphalt surfaces. Specifically, the BFC increased with the increase in braking slip ratio, decreased slightly with the rise in tire inflation pressure, and exhibited relatively low sensitivity to vertical load variations. All these results demonstrate that this integrated evaluation method provides targeted guidance for the mechanical performance optimization of tire tread rubber composites. Full article

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are highly concentrated, multicomponent alloys that have received significant attention due to their superior properties compared to conventional alloys. The mechanical properties and hardness are interrelated, and it is widely known that the hardness of HEAs depends on the principal alloying elements and their composition. Therefore, the desired hardness prediction to develop new HEAs is more interesting. However, the relationship of these compositions with the HEA hardness is very complex and nonlinear. In this study, we develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model using experimental data sets (535). The compositional elements—Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Fe, W, Mo, and Ti—are considered input parameters, and hardness is considered as an output parameter. The developed model shows excellent correlation coefficients (Adj R2) of 99.84% and 99.3% for training and testing data sets, respectively. We developed a user-friendly graphical interface for the model. The developed model was used to understand the effect of alloying elements on hardness. It was identified that the Al, Cr, and Mn were found to significantly enhance hardness by promoting the formation and stabilization of BCC and B2 phases, which are inherently harder due to limited active slip systems. In contrast, elements such as Co, Cu, Fe, and Ni led to a reduction in hardness, primarily due to their role in stabilizing the ductile FCC phase. The addition of W markedly increased the hardness by inducing severe lattice distortion and promoting the formation of hard intermetallic compounds. Full article

Currently, resin polymer anchoring agents are widely used for bolting support in coal mine roadways to anchor the bolts to the surrounding rock mass. However, due to the relatively low strength of the resin anchoring agent itself, the required anchoring length tends to be excessively long. Based on this, this paper proposes the use of resin concrete as a replacement for resin. Compared to resin anchoring agents, resin concrete offers greater mechanical interlocking force with anchor rods, which can reduce the theoretical anchoring length. To systematically investigate the influence of factors such as the diameter and anchorage length of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bolt on the bond behavior between GFRP bolts and resin concrete, 33 standard pull-out tests were designed and conducted in accordance with the CSA S807-19 standard. Taking the 18 mm-diameter bolt as an example, when the bond lengths were 2D, 3D, 4D, and 5D, the average bond strengths were 41.32 MPa, 39.18 MPa, 38.84 MPa, and 37.44 MPa, respectively. This represents a decrease of 5.18%, 6.00%, and 9.39% for each subsequent increase in bond length. The results indicate that the bond strength between GFRP anchors and resin decreases as the anchorage length increases. Due to the shear lag effect, the average bond strength also decreases with increasing anchor diameter. Taking a 5D (where D is the anchor diameter) anchorage length as a reference, the average bond strengths for anchor diameters of 18 mm, 20 mm, 22 mm, and 24 mm were 37.44 MPa, 33.97 MPa, 32.18 MPa, and 31.50 MPa, respectively. The corresponding reductions compared to the 18 mm diameter case were 9.27%, 14.05%, and 15.87%. Based on the experimental results, this paper proposes a bond–slip constitutive model between the bolt and resin concrete, which consists of a rising branch, a descending branch, and a residual branch. A differential equation relating shear stress to displacement was established, and the functions describing the variation in displacement, normal stress, and shear stress along the position were solved for the ascending branch. Although an analytical solution for the differential equation of the descending branch was not obtained, it will not affect the subsequent derivation of the theoretical anchorage length for the GFRP bolt–resin concrete system, as structural components in practical engineering are not permitted to undergo excessive bond-slip. In winter, stay cable sheaths are prone to icing, which increases cable loads and poses a falling-ice hazard upon thawing. While manual and chemical de-icing are common methods, their safety and cost drawbacks make robotic de-icing a promising alternative. Robotic de-icing offers a promising alternative. However, to protect the sheath from damage, the de-icing blade is designed to minimize contact with its surface. Consequently, a thin layer of residual ice is often left behind, which reduces the surface friction coefficient and complicates the climbing process. This study evaluates the climbing performance of a self-manufactured cable-climbing mechanism through laboratory tests and dynamic simulations (ADAMS). A physical prototype was built, and dynamic simulations of the cable-climbing mechanism were conducted using Automated Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems (ADAMS) software. The preliminary validation results demonstrate that the mechanism is capable of maintaining stable climbing under extreme conditions, including a friction coefficient of 0.12 to reflect thin-ice variability and indicated stable climbing even at μ = 0.12), a vertical inclination of 90°, and a load of 12 kg, confirming the design’s validity. Furthermore, we analyzed key parameters. A lower friction coefficient requires a higher clamping force and adversely affects the climbing speed due to increased slip. Similarly, an increased payload elevates the mechanism’s deflection angle, spring force, and wheel torque, which in turn reduces the climbing speed. Cable inclination has a complex effect: deflection decreases with slope, yet clamping force peaks near 70°, showing a bell-shaped trend. This peak requirement dictated the damping spring selection, which was given a safety margin. This ensures safe operation and acceleration at all other angles. Limitations: The present results constitute a feasibility validation under controlled laboratory conditions and rigid-support simulations. The long-term effects of residual ice and field performance remain to be confirmed in planned field trials. Full article

This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of PBL shear connectors in UHPC during the elastic stage, utilizing push-out experiments and numerical simulation. This study simplifies the mechanical behavior of PBL shear connectors in UHPC under normal service conditions as a plane strain problem for the UHPC dowel and a Winkler’s Elastic foundation beam theory for the transverse reinforcement. The UHPC dowel is a thick-walled cylindrical shell subjected to non-axisymmetric loads inside and outside simultaneously in the plane-strain state. The stress solution is derived by assuming the contact stress distribution function and using the Airy stress function. The displacement solution is subsequently determined from the stresses by differentiating between elastic and rigid body displacements. By modeling the transverse reinforcement as an infinitely long elastic foundation beam, its displacement solution and stress solution are obtained. We obtain the load–slip curve calculation method by superimposing the displacement of UHPC with the transverse reinforcement in the direction of shear action. The proposed analytical solutions for stress and slip, as well as the method for calculating load–slip, are shown to be reliable by comparing them to the numerical simulation analysis results. The long-distance high-voltage transmission tower-line system, frequently traversing active fault zones, is vulnerable to severe symmetry-breaking damage during earthquakes due to asymmetric permanent ground displacements. However, the seismic performance of such systems, particularly concerning symmetry-breaking effects caused by asymmetric fault displacements, remains inadequately studied. This study investigates the symmetry degradation mechanisms in a 1:40 scaled 500 kV tower-line system subjected to cross-fault ground motions via shaking table tests. The testing protocol incorporates representative fault mechanisms—strike-slip and normal/reverse faults—to systematically evaluate their differential impacts on symmetry response. Measurements of acceleration, strain, and displacement reveal that while acceleration responses are spectrally controlled, structural damage is highly fault-type dependent and markedly asymmetric. The acceleration of towers without permanent displacement was 35–50% lower than that of towers with permanent displacement. Under identical permanent displacement conditions, peak displacements caused by normal/reverse motions exceeded those from strike-slip motions by 50–100%. Accordingly, a fault-type-specific amplification factor of 1.5 is proposed for the design of towers in dip-slip fault zones. These results offer novel experimental insights into symmetry violation under fault ruptures, including fault-specific correction factors and asymmetry-resistant design strategies. However, the conclusions are subject to limitations such as scale effects and the exclusion of vertical ground motion components. Full article

In order to tackle the issues of poor mobility and unstable traction of electric vehicles on sandy landscapes, this research develops a high-accuracy numerical model for wheel–sand interaction relying on the Discrete Element Method (DEM). An innovative parameter calibration procedure is proposed herein, which optimizes the sand contact parameters. This reduces the error between the simulated and measured angles of repose to merely 1.2% and substantially improves the model’s reliability. The model was then used to systematically compare the performance of a 205/55 R16 slick tire with a treaded tire on sand. Simulations demonstrate that at a 30% slip ratio, the treaded tire exhibited significantly higher traction and greater sinkage than the slick tire. This indicates that tread patterns enhance traction mechanically by increasing the contact area and promoting shear deformation of the sand. The trends of traction with slip ratio and the corresponding sand flow patterns showed excellent agreement with experimental observations, which validated the simulation approach. This research provides an efficient and accurate tool for evaluating tire-sand interaction, providing critical support for the design and control of electric vehicles on complex terrains. Understanding the mechanisms of injection-induced fault slip is critical for managing subsurface energy technologies. This study experimentally investigates the influences of the intermediate principal stress (σy), minimum principal stress (σx), and injection pressure (P) on fault slip initiation stress and velocity. Experiments were conducted on pre-faulted granite specimens (100 mm cubes) using a true triaxial apparatus, simulating in situ stress conditions. The results reveal a two-stage slip process: an initial stable stage dominated by elastic energy accumulation, followed by a slip stage characterized by rapid energy release and stick–slip oscillations. We found that slip initiation stress increases linearly with both σy and σx, but decreases linearly with increasing P. A higher σy delays slip initiation but can lead to larger stress drops and higher slip velocities upon failure. Conversely, fluid injection weakens the fault by reducing effective normal stress, exhibiting a dual effect: it lowers the stress required for slip and enhances the instantaneous slip velocity after initiation. Our findings provide quantitative, mechanistic insights into fault slip behavior, serving as a critical benchmark for numerical simulations and contributing to improved assessment and mitigation of injection-induced seismicity across various engineering applications. This study examines the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of copper tool electrodes processed via Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP), with a specific focus on their performance in Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) applications. A novel Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Method (CPFEM) framework is employed to model anisotropic slip behavior and microscale deformation mechanisms. The primary objective is to elucidate how initial crystallographic orientation influences hardness, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. Simulations are performed on single-crystal copper for three representative Face Centered Cubic (FCC) orientations. Using an explicit CPFEM model, the study examines texture evolution and deformation heterogeneity during the ECAP process of single-crystal copper. The results indicate that the <100> single-crystal orientation exhibits the highest Taylor factor and the most homogeneous distribution of plastic equivalent strain (PEEQ), suggesting enhanced resistance to plastic flow. In contrast, the <111> single-crystal orientation displays localized deformation and reduced hardening. A decreasing Taylor factor correlates with more uniform slip, which improves both electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as machinability, by minimizing dislocation-related resistance. These findings make a novel contribution to the field by highlighting the critical role of crystallographic orientation in governing slip activity and deformation pathways, which directly impact thermal wear resistance and the fabrication efficiency of ECAP-processed copper electrodes in EDM. The micro-interface slip damping mechanism is insensitive to temperature, making it suitable for applications where the operating environment makes viscoelastic polymers ineffective. Damping material systems that rely on micro-interface slip typically embody randomly disposed interlocking units leading to complex material behaviors. This work studies a compressed coir vibration isolator that provides a lightweight, low cost and environmentally friendly alternative to common polymer devices. Under cyclic loading, it displays highly nonlinear hysteresis and a gradual change in properties based on the load history. The nonlinear hysteresis is captured with a Masing model, which has been shown to provide an adequate phenomenological representation of systems with large numbers of miniature stick-slip contacts. This study further explores a new way to enrich the Masing model by encoding time evolution using restoring force or displacement time integral, directly adopted from mem-models, a new family of models transferred from electrical engineering. In addition to using the data from the coir isolator, two additional datasets from clayey soil, another application of micro-interface slip damping, are used to validate the modeling approach. Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) composites are increasingly utilized in photovoltaic mounting systems due to their excellent mechanical properties and durability. Bolted connections, valued for their simplicity, ease of installation, and effective load transfer, are widely employed for joining composite components. An orthogonal experimental design was adopted to investigate the effects of key parameters—including bolt end distance, number of bolts, bolt material, bolt diameter, preload, and connection length—on the load-bearing performance of three bolted BFRP plate configurations: lap joint (DJ), single lap joint (DP), and double lap joint (SP). Test results showed that the DJ connection exhibited the highest average tensile load capacity, exceeding those of the SP and DP connections by 45.3% and 50.2%, respectively. This superiority is attributed to the DJ specimen’s longer effective shear length and greater number of load-bearing bolts. Conversely, the SP connection demonstrated the largest average peak displacement, with increases of 29.7% and 52.9% compared to the DP and DJ connections. The double-sided constraint in the SP configuration promotes more uniform preload distribution and enhances shear deformation capacity. Orthogonal sensitivity analysis further revealed that the number of bolts and preload magnitude significantly influenced the ultimate tensile load capacity across all connection types. Finally, a calculation model for the tensile load capacity of bolted BFRP connections was established, incorporating a friction decay coefficient (α) and shear strength (τ). This model yields calculated errors under 15% and is applicable to shear slip-dominated failure modes, thereby providing a parametric basis for optimizing the tensile design of bolted BFRP joints. This study investigates the development of axial force in micro anti-slide piles under soil movement during slope stabilization. Axial force arises from two primary mechanisms: axial soil displacement (zs) and pile kinematics. The former plays a dominant role, producing either tensile or compressive axial force depending on the direction of zs, while the kinematically induced component remains consistently tensile. A sliding angle of α=5° represents an approximate transition point where these two effects balance each other. Furthermore, the two mechanisms exhibit distinct mobilization behaviors: zs-induced axial force mobilizes earlier than both bending moment and shear force, whereas kinematically induced axial force mobilizes significantly later. The study reveals two distinct pile–soil interaction mechanisms depending on proximity to the slip surface: away from the slip surface, axial soil resistance is governed by rigid cross-section translation, whereas near the slip surface, rotation-dominated displacement accompanied by soil–pile separation introduces significant complexity in predicting both the magnitude and direction of axial friction. A hyperbolic formulation was adopted to model both the lateral soil resistance relative to lateral pile–soil displacement (p-y behavior) and the axial frictional resistance relative to axial pile–soil displacement (t-z behavior). Soil resistance equations were derived to explicitly incorporate the effects of cross-sectional rotation and pile–soil separation. A novel beam-spring finite element method (BSFEM) that incorporates both geometric and material nonlinearities of the pile behavior was developed, using a soil displacement-driven solution algorithm. Validation against both numerical simulations and field monitoring data from an engineering application demonstrates the model’s effectiveness in capturing the distribution and evolution of axial deformation and axial force in micropiles under varying soil movement conditions. Motion of dislocations is a common mechanism of plasticity in many materials. Dislocation-mediated deformation is essentially an inhomogeneous process, which is manifest in the formation of slip lines and complicated cell wall structures. An adequate description of these processes is an important goal of Materials Theory, which aims to describe the mechanical properties of materials and their reliability in service. This publication advances the thermodynamically consistent theory of dislocation-mediated plasticity to include the spatial gradients of the independent variables. We conducted the renormalization group scaling analysis of deformation and obtained the low-energy dislocation structures as ordinary solutions of the equilibrium equations without any arbitrary assumptions. We matched the emerging theoretical structures with the experimentally observed and made several predictions regarding possible experiments. Full article

Microstructural analysis of hot-compressed magnesium alloys is crucial for understanding the plastic formability of magnesium alloys during thermo-mechanical processing. Thermal compression tests and finite element simulations were conducted on a low rare-earth (RE) Mg-1.8Nd-0.4Zr-0.3Ca alloy. Multiple microstructural characterization techniques were employed to analyze slip systems, twinning mechanisms, dynamic recrystallization (DRX), and precipitate phases in the hot-compressed alloy. The results demonstrated that the equivalent strain distribution within compressed specimens exhibits heterogeneity, with a larger equivalent strain in the core. After thermal compression, the original microscopic structure formed a necklace-like structure. The primary DRX mechanisms comprise continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), twin-induced dynamic recrystallization (TDRX), and particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN). Pyramidal slip and recrystallization constitute primary contributors to peak texture weakening and tilting. Mg41Nd5 and α-Zr phases enhanced dislocation density by impeding dislocation motion and promoting cross-slip activation. Hot compression provided the necessary thermal activation energy and stress conditions for solute atom diffusion and clustering, triggering dynamic precipitation of Mg41Nd5 phases. Full article
