This paper provides a theoretical investigation of the OR-product (∨-product) in soft set theory, an operation of central importance for handling uncertainty in decision-making. A comprehensive algebraic analysis is carried out with respect to various types of subsets and equalities, with particular emphasis on M-subset and M-equality, which represent the strictest forms of subsethood and equality. This framework reveals intrinsic algebraic symmetries, particularly in commutativity, associativity, and idempotency, which enrich the structural understanding of soft set theory. In addition, certain missing results on OR-products in the literature are completed, and our findings are systematically compared with existing ones, ensuring a more rigorous theoretical framework. A central contribution of this study is the demonstration that the collection of all soft sets over a universe, equipped with a restricted/extended intersection and the OR-product, forms a commutative hemiring with identity under soft L-equality. This structural result situates the OR-product within one of the most fundamental algebraic frameworks, connecting soft set theory with broader areas of algebra. To illustrate its practical relevance, the int-uni decision-making method on the OR-product is applied to a pilot recruitment case, showing how theoretical insights can support fair and transparent multi-criteria decision-making under uncertainty. From an applied perspective, these findings embody a form of symmetry in decision-making, ensuring fairness and balanced evaluation among multiple decision-makers. By bridging abstract algebraic development with concrete decision-making applications, the results affirm the dual significance of the OR-product—strengthening the theoretical framework of soft set theory while also providing a viable methodology for applied decision-making contexts. Overall sitting comfort is related to both static pressure distribution and dynamic human–seat interaction during vibration. This study proposes a simplified finite-element model of the seated human body that could potentially be used to assess overall sitting comfort. The static pressures of the seated human body measured on a rigid seat with different footrest layouts, together with the overall and localised apparent masses of the human body measured in a previous study, were used for model validation. The proposed model contained homogeneous soft tissues of the buttocks and thighs and rigid bodies connected to represent the torso. The tissue geometry was adjusted to match the measured anthropometry. Viscoelastic material was assigned to the tissues, and the properties were identified by fitting the modelled pressures and apparent masses to the measurement results. The proposed model was capable of reproducing static pressures and dynamic forces over the seat for the three sitting postures. Full article

This comprehensive review explores the distribution, diversity, and epidemiology of tick-borne borrelioses across Eurasia, focusing on Lyme borreliosis (LB) and other Borrelia-related infections. The genus Borrelia is categorized into three major groups, the Lyme Group (LG), the Relapsing Fever Group (RFG), and the Echidna–Reptile Group (REPG), each with distinct vectors, reservoirs, and pathogenic profiles. LB, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, is highly endemic in Europe and is increasingly reported in Asia, although it is underdiagnosed in Southeast Asia due to limited surveillance. This review details the ecological dynamics of tick vectors—primarily Ixodes spp.—and their vertebrate hosts, emphasizing the role of migratory birds and climate change in disease spread. It also highlights the presence of relapsing fever Borrelia species transmitted by soft ticks (Ornithodoros spp.) and the emergence of novel species such as Borrelia miyamotoi (RFG) and Borrelia turcica (REPG). This study underscores the need for harmonized surveillance systems, improved diagnostic tools, and integrated public health strategies to address the growing threat of borreliosis in Eurasia. To address the issue of insufficient contrast in conventional X-ray absorption imaging for biological soft tissues and weakly absorbing materials, this paper proposes a beam tracking X-ray phase-contrast imaging system using a conventional X-ray source. A periodic pinhole array mask is placed between the X-ray source and the sample to spatially modulate the X-ray beam, dividing it into multiple independent sub-beams. Each sub-beam is deflected due to the modulation effect of the sample, resulting in slight positional shifts in the intensity patterns formed on the detector. The experiments employ an X-ray source with a 400 μm focal spot and use a two-dimensional step-scanning approach to acquire image sequences of various samples. The experimental results show that this method can extract the edge profile and structural changes in the samples to some extent, and it demonstrates good contrast and detail recovery under weak absorption conditions. These results suggest that this method has certain application potential in material inspection, non-destructive testing, and related fields. Full article

Seabed-related issues are common in offshore areas. This poses significant challenges for the design and construction of offshore engineering projects. Under unfavourable seabed soil conditions, foundations may fail to meet the load-bearing capacity requirements, resulting in severe settlement and tilting and, ultimately, the failure of offshore structures. Despite the critical nature of these challenges, a comprehensive literature review for the identification and risk analysis of various unfavourable seabed soil conditions is currently lacking. This paper provides an overview of five key challenges related to seabed soil conditions in China, namely thick, soft mud layers; shallow gas and pockmarks; sand liquefaction; dense sand layers; and boulder stones. The formation mechanisms, distribution areas and engineering characteristics of these conditions are discussed in detail, integrating insights from previous research. Data from site investigations of real-world offshore engineering projects are presented, based on which risk assessment is conducted. This study not only enhances our understanding of the identification, distribution and hazards associated with various unfavourable seabed soil conditions in offshore engineering but also offers guidance on utilizing investigation data for effective risk assessment. The paper presents an innovative theoretical concept of a bio-inspired soft gripper system with two parallel jaws, a fixed and a mobile one. It is conceived for gripping fragile or soft objects with complex, irregular shapes that are easily deformable. This novel gripper is designed for handling small objects of masses up to 0.5 kg. The maximum gripping stroke of the mobile jaw is 13.5 mm. The driving motor is a pneumatic muscle, an actuator with inherently compliant, spring-like behavior. Compliance is the feature responsible for the soft character of the gripper system, ensuring its passive adaptability to the nature of the object to be gripped. The paper presents the structural, kinematic, static, and dynamic models of the novel gripper system and describes the compliant behavior of the entire assembly. The results of the dynamic simulation of the gripper have confirmed the attaining of the imposed motion-related performance. Full article

The fatigue constitutive model under cyclic loading is of vital importance for studying the fatigue deformation characteristics of soft rocks. In this paper, based on the classical Bingham model, a modified Bingham fatigue model for describing the fatigue deformation characteristics of soft rocks under cyclic loading was developed. Firstly, the traditional constant-viscosity component was replaced by an improved nonlinear viscoelastic component related to the number of cycles. The elastic component was replaced by an improved nonlinear elastic component that decays as the number of cycle loads increases. Meanwhile, by decomposing the cyclic dynamic loads into static loads and alternating loads, a one-dimensional nonlinear viscoelastic-plastic Bingham fatigue model was developed. Furthermore, a rock fatigue yield criterion was proposed, and by using an associated flow rule compatible with this criterion, the one-dimensional fatigue model was extended to a three-dimensional constitutive formulation under complex stress conditions. Finally, the applicability of the developed Bingham fatigue model was verified through fitting with experimental data, and the parameters of the model were identified. The model fitting results show high consistency with experimental data, with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.978 and 0.989 under low and high dynamic stress conditions, respectively, and root mean square errors (RMSEs) below 0.028. Comparative analysis between theoretical predictions and existing soft rock fatigue test data demonstrates that the developed Bingham fatigue model more effectively captures the complete fatigue deformation process under cyclic loading, including the deceleration, constant velocity, and acceleration phases. With its simplified component configuration and straightforward combination rules, this model provides a valuable reference for studying fatigue deformation characteristics of rock materials under dynamic loading conditions. Cultural heritage is increasingly mobilized as a tool of international engagement, yet the diplomatic uses of heritage remain conceptually underdeveloped and analytically fragmented. This paper introduces the Heritage Diplomacy Spectrum, a multidimensional framework that maps how states and affiliated actors use heritage—both tangible and intangible—to pursue strategic, symbolic, and normative goals in cross-border contexts. Drawing on critical heritage studies, international relations, and memory politics, this study identifies six analytical dimensions (e.g., proactive vs. reactive, cultural vs. historical, strategic vs. moral) and develops seven ideal types of heritage diplomacy, ranging from soft power projection to post-dependency and corrective diplomacy. These ideal types, constructed in the Weberian tradition, serve as heuristic tools to illuminate the varied motivations and diplomatic postures underlying heritage-based engagement. A central matrix is presented to illustrate how each type aligns with different strategic logics and affective registers. This study argues that heritage diplomacy constitutes a distinct modality of heritage governance—one that transcends soft power narratives and encompasses conflict, reconciliation, symbolic redress, and identity assertion. The framework contributes both to theory-building and policy analysis, offering a diagnostic lens through which the ethical, political, and communicative dimensions of heritage diplomacy can be more systematically understood. Hydrogels have emerged as promising biomaterials for oral tissue regeneration thanks to their high-water content, excellent biocompatibility, and ability to mimic native tissue environments. These versatile materials can be tailored to support cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, making them suitable for repairing both soft and hard oral tissues. When engineered from natural polymers and enriched with bioactive agents, hydrogels offer enhanced regenerative potential. Biopolymer-based hydrogels, derived from materials such as chitosan, alginate, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and gelatin, are particularly attractive due to their biodegradability, bioactivity, and structural similarity to the extracellular matrix, creating an optimal microenvironment for cell growth and tissue remodeling. Recent innovations have transformed these systems into multifunctional platforms capable of supporting targeted regeneration of periodontal tissues, alveolar bone, oral mucosa, dental pulp, and dentin. Integration of bioactive molecules, particularly essential oils, bio-derived constituents, cells, or growth factors, has introduced intrinsic antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant functionalities, addressing the dual challenge of promoting tissue regeneration while at the same time attenuating microbial contamination in the oral environment. This review explores the design strategies, material selection, functional properties, and biomedical applications in periodontal therapy, guided tissue regeneration, and implant integration of natural polymer-based hydrogels enriched with bioactive factors, highlighting their role in promoting oral tissue regeneration. In addition, we discuss current challenges related to mechanical stability, degradation rates, and clinical translation, while highlighting future directions for optimizing these next-generation bioactive hydrogel systems in regenerative dentistry. Reporting Matters: Severe Adverse Events in Soft Tissue Sarcoma Therapy—A 30-Year Systematic Review of Placebo- and Non-Systemic-Controlled Randomized Trials

Background: Systemic therapy for soft tissue sarcoma (STS) provides modest survival benefit but carries clinically relevant toxicity. Published trials report adverse events (AEs) of varying quality and extension. Poor toxicity reporting hampers balanced risk–benefit appraisal. Methods: A PRISMA-2020 systematic review was registered in PROSPERO CRD420251087366. PubMed, CENTRAL, and Google Scholar were searched from 16 December 2024 to 16 April 2025 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating chemotherapy, kinase inhibitors, or immune checkpoint inhibitors in STS. AE terms were harmonized to CTCAE v5.0; event rates were normalized to patients evaluable for safety. Pooled proportions used DerSimonian–Laird random-effects models; between-group comparisons employed unpaired t-tests. Risk of bias (RoB 2) was assessed with the Cochrane RoB 2 tool. Results: Ten RCTs (1079 treated, 979 control patients; 1994–2024) met the inclusion criteria, although two lacked sufficient presentation of toxicity data and seven failed to report parallel control-arm AEs. Pooled normalized incidences for treated patients were as follows: grade ≥ 3 hematological AEs, 17% (95% CI 14–20); severe gastrointestinal AEs, 9% (8–11); and grade 4 AEs, ≤6%. Anthracycline-based and kinase-inhibitor regimens displayed comparable composite grade ≥ 3 burdens (58% vs. 84%, p = 0.64). Between-study heterogeneity was considerable for gastrointestinal and hematological events (I2 > 60%), driven by differing AE scales and denominators. Late-effect toxicities (cardiac, hepatic, neurological, and nephrological) were rarely reported, occurring in <1% of the patients. Across the three RCTs with control-arm data, experimental therapy increased common grade 3 AEs by 4–12 percentage points (p = 0.001). RoB 2 flagged serious concerns in 4/10 trials. Conclusions: Severe AEs in STS systemic therapy are moderately frequent; while the toxicity spectrum differs across drug classes (e.g., hematological for anthracyclines vs. neuropathic or fatigue-related for agents such as eribulin), the aggregate burden of severe AEs has not been lower for newer agents. Confidence in these estimates is limited by incomplete and non-standardized AE reporting. Future sarcoma trials must adopt CTCAE v5.0, specify explicit safety denominators, and publish full AE matrices to enable high-certainty risk–benefit assessment. Full article

Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare occlusal and articular characteristics between young adults with and without a confirmed diagnosis of sleep bruxism, through a case-control study based on polysomnography. Methods: We conducted a case–control study with probabilistic sampling, including 20 participants with a polysomnography-confirmed diagnosis of sleep bruxism and 20 age- and sex-matched controls. A clinical oral examination was conducted to identify wear facets, joint sounds, and soft tissue indentations. Occlusal relationships were analyzed using mounted models on a semi-adjustable articulator, evaluating interferences during working, balancing, and protrusive movements, premature contacts, attrition, and dental inclinations. Results: Sleep bruxism showed a higher frequency of temporomandibular joint sounds (35% vs. 5%; p = 0.017; w = 0.375) and left-side balancing interferences (p = 0.04; d = 0.723). Multivariate analysis revealed a moderate correlation between bruxism and the combination of joint sound and occlusal inclination (COR = 0.39; 95% CI: 0.19–0.57; I2 = 0.0%). Joint sound showed a weak association with REM-related bruxism (COR = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.05–0.51; I2 = 21.7%) and a moderate association with non-REM bruxism (COR = 0.41). The correlation with occlusal inclination was stronger during REM sleep (COR = 0.41) than during non-REM sleep (COR = 0.35; I2 = 0.0%), indicating consistent and clinically relevant associations. Conclusions: Occlusal and functional characteristics associated with sleep bruxism were identified, particularly joint sounds and dental inclinations, although no direct causal relationship was established. These findings suggest the presence of specific morphofunctional patterns that may play a role in the clinical expression of sleep bruxism. Full article

Granular jamming grippers have emerged as a versatile solution in soft robotics due to their ability to manipulate objects of various shapes and sizes, earning them the label of “universal grippers”. They are composed of granular material confined within an elastic membrane that conforms to the object like a fluid and solidifies upon vacuum application, enabling a firm grip through friction and grain interlocking. This work provides a systematic review of the state of the art, addressing their physical principles, the influence of grain and membrane properties, performance characterization methods, and applications across diverse fields. Additionally, the main control variables of these grippers closely related to state variables used in control systems are discussed, along with the current knowledge gaps. Background/Objectives: While skeletal facial asymmetry is commonly assessed using posteroanterior (PA) cephalometric radiographs, the association between skeletal measurements and volumetric soft tissue asymmetry remains unclear. This study aimed to identify which skeletal parameters are most strongly correlated with soft tissue asymmetry measured using three-dimensional (3D) imaging. Methods: Thirty-three Japanese patients (8 males and 25 females; mean age: 26.85 ± 12.13 years) undergoing orthodontic–orthognathic treatment were included. Three-dimensional facial surface data were acquired using the VECTRA® H1 imaging system. Soft tissue asymmetry was quantified by calculating the volumetric difference between the original and mirrored 3D facial images, divided into three regions: whole face, midface, and lower face. PA cephalometric radiographs were traced, and 28 skeletal variables were measured. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between skeletal variables and asymmetry volumes and squared to obtain R2 values. Results: The strongest correlation with whole facial soft tissue asymmetry was found for menton deviation from the midline (R2 = 0.630). Similar trends were observed for the lower face. In contrast, only one skeletal variable showed a moderate correlation with midfacial asymmetry (maximum R2 = 0.186), and skeletal parameters related to maxillary occlusal cant did not show significant associations. Conclusions: Volumetric soft tissue asymmetry is strongly associated with mandibular skeletal deviation, particularly menton displacement, whereas midfacial skeletal morphology may have a limited impact. Further studies including more patients with pronounced midfacial soft tissue asymmetry are warranted. Full article

Outcome of Infantile Malignant Solid Tumors: A Single-Center Experience

Background: Malignant solid tumors diagnosed during the first year of life represent a rare but clinically significant subgroup of pediatric cancers. Their biological behavior, treatment responses, and prognosis differ substantially from tumors diagnosed in older children due to developmental immaturity and age-related therapeutic limitations. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 88 infants diagnosed with malignant solid tumors before 12 months of age at a single tertiary center between March 2011 and March 2023. Demographic, clinical, pathological, and treatment data were collected. Overall survival (OS) was estimated by Kaplan–Meier analysis, and prognostic factors were evaluated using univariate and multivariate Cox regression models. Results: Of the 98 initially screened patients, 88 were eligible for analysis. The median age at diagnosis was 7 months, with a median follow-up of 42 months. The most common tumor locations were intra-abdominal (64.7%), brain (20.5%), and bone/soft tissue (12.5%). Neuroblastoma was the leading diagnosis (30.7%), with spontaneous regression observed in 29.6% of cases. Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor (ATRT) was the most frequent brain tumor (9.1%). The 5-year OS for the entire cohort was 78.3%. Brain tumors were associated with significantly higher mortality (HR 4.32, p = 0.01), while intra-abdominal tumors predicted improved survival (HR 0.31, p = 0.02). Conclusions: Infantile malignant solid tumors display heterogeneous clinical behavior and outcomes. While favorable results can be achieved in neuroblastoma and soft tissue sarcomas, brain tumors, particularly ATRT, remain a therapeutic challenge. Age-specific, risk-adapted treatment strategies and earlier detection are critical to improving survival and reducing long-term sequelae in this vulnerable population. Full article

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the available evidence on the use of orthodontic mini-implants (MIs) as temporary anchorage devices (TADs), with particular focus on how insertion angulation may influence clinical outcomes. A clinical case report was also included to complement the review findings. Methods: A systematic review was performed following PRISMA guidelines and a focused PICO question. Searches in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, supplemented by manual screening of reference lists. Duplicates, systematic reviews, and studies outside the PICO scope were excluded. An observational analysis of CBCT and intraoral images, and a clinical case report, were evaluated with a standardized protocol for angulation classification based on anatomical landmarks and angular measurements. Results: Ten studies met the eligibility criteria. Most reported high survival rates, with stability defined by the absence of TAD mobility or loss. CBCT-derived data from two studies, together with one clinical case, demonstrated maintenance of alveolar bone. Improved outcomes were occasionally associated with changes in insertion angulation. Vertical positioning was more frequently linked to complications in shorter TADs, while horizontal placement preserved bone but introduced hygiene-related difficulties. Conclusions: TAD success and bone preservation may depend on insertion angulation, TAD size, and soft tissue conditions. Further standardized prospective studies are needed to validate these findings, particularly regarding intermediate diagonal insertion angles (between vertical and horizontal) extending from palatal to buccal, as observed in our clinical case, which is not yet reported in the literature.
