Controlled thermal stratification in water is crucial for applications such as testing the thermal stealth of underwater vehicles and studying aquatic ecosystems. However, existing laboratory methods for generating such stratified environments often lack stability and uniformity. This study systematically investigates the influence of various hot water injection methods on the stability of thermal stratification. A computational fluid dynamics model, incorporating the overlapping dynamic mesh technique and the Volume of Fluid free-surface capturing method, was used to compare four generation strategies: single-side fixed discharge, towed horizontal discharge, towed vertical upward discharge, and multi-nozzle towed vertical upward discharge. The results indicate that towed discharge methods produce more stable and uniform thermal stratification compared to the fixed discharge method, achieving a 10.1% increase in the water body’s vertical stability coefficient and a 4.5% increase in the Richardson number, while the maximum surface temperature difference was significantly reduced from 0.98 K to 0.37 K. Among the towed methods, vertical upward discharge demonstrated superior stability over horizontal discharge, as it directly transports the high-temperature plume to the upper layer, minimizing thermal exchange with the lower layer, with its vertical stability coefficient and Richardson number being 17.9% and 23% higher, respectively. While maintaining a constant heat input per unit volume, the multi-nozzle configuration yielded N2 and Ri values comparable to the single-nozzle version, while further improving the temperature uniformity at the free surface. Consequently, the towed vertical upward discharge emerges as a highly efficient method for establishing stable and uniform thermal stratification, with the multi-nozzle configuration showing significant promise for large-scale applications. To address the inefficiencies of traditional numerical simulations and the high cost of experimental validation in the aerodynamic–stealth integrated design of S-shaped inlets for aero-engines, this study proposes a novel parameter prediction model based on a fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering and nonlinear dynamic adaptive particle swarm optimization-enhanced radial basis function neural network (NDAPSO-RBFNN). The FCM algorithm is applied to reduce the feature dimensionality of aerodynamic parameters and determine the optimal hidden layer structure of the RBF network using clustering validity indices. Meanwhile, the NDAPSO algorithm introduces a three-stage adaptive inertia weight mechanism to balance global exploration and local exploitation effectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed model significantly improves training efficiency and generalization capability. Specifically, the model achieves a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.81×108 on the training set and 8.26×108 on the test set, demonstrating robust predictive accuracy. Furthermore, 98.3% of the predicted values fall within the y=x±3β confidence interval (β=1.2×107). Compared with traditional PSO-RBF models, the number of iterations of NDAPSO-RBF network is lower, the single prediction time of NDAPSO-RBF network is shorter, and the number of calls to the standard deviation of the NDAPSO-RBF network is lower. These results indicate that the proposed model not only provides a reliable and efficient surrogate modeling method for complex inlet flow fields but also offers a promising approach for real-time multi-objective aerodynamic–stealth optimization in aerospace applications. Polymers and polymer composites offer versatile possibilities for engineering the physico-chemical properties of materials on micro- and macroscopic scales. This review provides an overview of polymeric and polymer-decorated particles that can serve as drug-delivery vectors: linear polymers, star polymers, diblock-copolymer micelles, polymer-grafted nanoparticles, polymersomes, stealth liposomes, microgels, and biomolecular condensates. The physico-chemical interactions between the delivery vectors and biological cells range from chemical interactions on the molecular scale to deformation energies on the particle scale. The focus of this review is on the structure and elastic properties of these particles, as well as their circulation in blood and cellular uptake. Furthermore, the effects of polymer decoration in vivo (e.g., of glycosylated plasma membranes, cortical cytoskeletal networks, and naturally occurring condensates) on drug delivery are discussed. Solid–liquid phase change materials (PCMs) have attracted significant attention due to their high enthalpy, which enables superior energy storage density. However, it is difficult to maintain their original shapes in a molten state. Therefore, confining PCMs within porous materials is an important method, either through mixing molten polymers and PCMs or confining PCMs in pre-prepared porous materials (e.g., aerogels). The former method is straightforward and easy to execute but its stability is severely limited, and the latter is exactly the opposite. Herein, aerogel-confined functional liquid made via in situ solid–liquid host–guest composite strategy is reported. As a proof of concept, Nylon 66 and 1,6-hexanediol are selected as the solid and liquid phases, respectively. 1,6-hexanediol not only serves as a solvent to dissolve Nylon 66 but also induces sol–gel transition during the cooling process and acts as a PCM to store energy. Unlike aerogel-supported systems requiring multi-step processing, this approach integrates porous host formation and PCM encapsulation in one step. The resulting shape-stabilized PCMs (ss-PCMs) exhibit obscure leakage, high latent heat (160 J/g), mechanical robustness (compressive modulus of 3.6 MPa), and low thermal conductivity (0.081 W/(m·K)) above 75 wt% loading of 1,6-hexanediol. These ss-PCMs enable infrared stealth by delaying thermal detection and passive thermal buffering that suppress temperature fluctuations. The in situ solid–liquid host–guest composite strategy is straightforward, being achievable through a one-pot method involving heating and cooling cycles, with high raw material utilization and minimal waste generation, thus maximizing the conversion rate of raw materials into the final product. By combining the excellent liquid retention capability of aerogels with process simplicity, this methodology opens new avenues for the development of ss-PCMs. Full article

Metamaterial absorbers in terahertz (THz) based bands have garnered significant attention for their potential applications in military stealth, terahertz imaging, and other fields. Nevertheless, the limited bandwidth, low absorption rate, and heavy weight greatly reduce the further development and wide application of terahertz absorbers. To solve these problems, we propose a polystyrene (PS)-based ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber integrated with a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) double-sided adhesive layer and a patterned indium tin oxide (ITO) film through the simulation method, which operates in the THz band. The electromagnetic wave absorption properties and underlying physical absorption mechanisms of the proposed metamaterial absorbers are comprehensively modeled and rigorously numerically simulated. The research demonstrates the metamaterial absorber can achieve absorption performance of over 90% for fully polarized incident waves in the ultra-wideband range of 1.2–10 THz, especially achieving perfect absorption characteristics of over 99.9% near 1.8–1.9 THz and 5.8–6.2 THz. The proposed absorber has a lightweight physical property of 0.7 kg/m2 and polarization-insensitive characteristic, and it achieves a broad-angle that allows a range of incidence angles up to 60°. The simulation research results of this article provide theoretical support for the design of terahertz absorbers with ultra-wideband absorption characteristics. Full article

The development of biodegradable nanocarriers has long been a priority for researchers and medical professionals in the realm of drug delivery. Because of their inherent benefits, which include superior biocompatibility, customizable degradability, easy surface functionalization, and stealth-like behavior, polylactic acid-hyperbranched polyglycerol (PLA-HPG) copolymers have demonstrated a promising future in the field of biomedical research. The synthesis of PLA-HPG copolymers and the creation of their nanoparticles for biomedical uses have been the focus of current efforts. In this review, we summarize the synthetic strategies of PLA-HPG copolymers and corresponding nanoparticles, and highlight their physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, and degradation properties. Furthermore, we introduce a number of PLA-HPG nanoparticles that are utilized for surface skin delivery, wound dressing, and in vivo drug delivery biological applications. Finally, we conclude by offering our thoughts on how this nanoplatform might advance in the future. Full article

The Kuroshio Current’s flow velocity imposes exacting requirements on underwater vehicle propulsive systems. Ecological preservation necessitates low-noise propeller designs to mitigate operational disturbances. As technological evolution advances toward greater intelligence and system integration, intelligent unmanned systems are positioning themselves as a critical frontier in marine innovation. In recent years, the global research community has increased its efforts towards the development of high-maneuverability underwater vehicles. However, propeller design optimization ignores the key balance between acoustic performance and hydrodynamic efficiency, as well as the appropriate speed threshold for blade rotation. In order to solve this problem, the propeller design of the NACA 65A010 airfoil is optimized by using OpenProp v3.3.4 and XFlow 2022 software, aiming at innovating the propulsion system of shallow water agile submersibles. The study presents an integrated design framework combining lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations synergized with fully Lagrangian-LES modeling, implementing rotational speed thresholds to detect cavitation inception, followed by advanced acoustic propagation analysis. Through rigorous comparative assessment of hydrodynamic metrics, we establish an optimization protocol for propeller selection tailored to littoral zone operational demands. Studies have shown that increasing the number of propeller blades can reduce the single-blade load and delay cavitation, but too many blades will aggravate the complexity of the flow field, resulting in reduced efficiency and noise rebound. It is concluded that the propeller with five blades, a diameter of 234 mm, and a speed of 500 RPM exhibits the best performance. Under these conditions, the water efficiency is 69.01%, and the noise is the lowest, which basically realizes the balance between hydrodynamic efficiency and acoustic performance. This paradigm-shifting research carries substantial implications for next-generation marine vehicles, particularly in optimizing operational stealth and energy efficiency through intelligent propulsion architecture. Electrochromic devices (ECDs) capable of modulating both visible color and infrared (IR) emissivity are promising for applications in smart thermal camouflage and multifunctional displays. However, conventional transmissive ECDs suffer from limited IR modulation due to the low IR transmittance of transparent electrodes. Here, we report a reflection-type electrochromic zinc-ion battery (HWEC-ZIB) using a self-doped polyaniline nanorod film (SP(ANI-MA)) as the active layer. By positioning the active material at the device surface, this structure avoids interference from transparent electrodes and enables broadband and efficient IR emissivity tuning. To prevent electrolyte-induced IR absorption, a thermal lamination encapsulation method is employed. The optimized device achieves emissivity modulation ranges of 0.28 (3–5 μm) and 0.19 (8–14 μm), delivering excellent thermal camouflage performance. It also exhibits a visible color change from earthy yellow to deep green, suitable for various natural environments. In addition, the HWEC-ZIB shows a high areal capacity of 72.15 mAh cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2 and maintains 80% capacity after 5000 cycles, demonstrating outstanding electrochemical stability. This work offers a versatile device platform integrating IR stealth, visual camouflage, and energy storage, providing a promising solution for next-generation adaptive camouflage and defense-oriented electronics. The lateral vibration of propulsion shafting is a critical factor affecting the acoustic stealth performance of underwater vehicles. As the main vibration isolation component in transmitting vibrational energy, the damping efficiency of the propulsion shafting support system (PSSS) holds particular significance. This study investigates the dynamic characteristics of the PSSS with the integral squeeze film damper (ISFD). A dynamic model of ISFD–PSSS is developed to systematically analyze the effects of shaft speed and external load on its dynamic behavior. Three test bearings (conventional, 1S, and 3S structure) are designed and manufactured to study the influence of damping structure layout scheme, damping fluid viscosity, unbalanced load, and shaft speed on the vibration reduction ability of ISFD–PSSS through axis orbit and vibration velocity. The results show that the damping effects of ISFD–PSSS are observed across all test conditions, presenting distinct nonlinear patterns. Suppression effectiveness is more pronounced in the vertical direction compared to the horizontal direction. The 3S structure bearing has better vibration reduction and structural stability than other schemes. The research results provide a reference for the vibration control method of rotating machinery. Three-dimensional (3D) radar imaging is essential for target detection and measurement of scattering characteristics. Cylindrical scanning, a prevalent spatial sampling technique, provides benefits in engineering applications and has been extensively utilized for assessing the radar stealth capabilities of large aircraft. Traditional cylindrical scanning generally utilizes highly sampled full-coverage techniques, leading to an excessive quantity of sampling points and diminished image efficiency, constraining its use for quick detection applications. This work presents an efficient 3D sampling strategy that integrates vertical linear scanning with horizontal rotating motion to overcome these restrictions. A joint angle–space sampling model is developed, and geometric constraints are implemented to enhance the scanning trajectory. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared to conventional techniques, the proposed method achieves a 94% reduction in the scanning duration while maintaining a peak sidelobe level ratio (PSLR) of 12 dB. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that 3D imaging may be accomplished solely by a “V”-shaped trajectory, efficiently determining the minimal possible sampling aperture. This approach offers novel insights and theoretical backing for the advancement of high-efficiency, low-redundancy 3D radar imaging systems. Full article

To enhance the survivability of armed helicopters in high-threat environments, integrated infrared (IR) suppressors are increasingly adopted to reduce thermal signatures. However, such integration significantly alters the exhaust flow field, which may in turn affect both the infrared and acoustic characteristics of the helicopter. This study investigates the aerodynamic, infrared, and acoustic impacts of an integrated IR suppressor through the comparative analysis of two helicopter configurations: a conventional design and a design equipped with an integrated IR suppressor. Full-scale models are used to analyze flow field and IR radiation characteristics, while scaled models are employed for aeroacoustic simulations. The results show that although the integrated IR suppressor increases flow resistance and reduces entrainment performance within the exhaust mixing duct, it significantly improves the thermal dissipation efficiency of the exhaust plume. The infrared radiation analysis reveals that the integrated suppressor effectively reduces radiation intensity in both the 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm bands, especially under cruise conditions where the exhaust is more efficiently cooled by ambient airflow. Equivalent radiation temperatures calculated along principal axes confirm lower IR signatures for the integrated configuration. Preliminary acoustic analyses suggest that the slit-type nozzle and integrated suppressor layout may also offer potential benefits in jet noise reduction. Overall, the integrated IR suppressor provides a clear advantage in lowering the infrared observability of armed helicopters, with acceptable aerodynamic and acoustic trade-offs. These findings offer valuable guidance for the future development of low-observable helicopter platforms. Full article

The growing need for lightweight, customizable electromagnetic wave absorbers with weather resistance in aerospace and electromagnetic compatibility applications motivates this study, which addresses the limitations of conventional materials in simultaneously achieving structural efficiency, broadband absorption, and environmental durability. We propose a fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based approach for fabricating lightweight wave-absorbing structures using acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites. Results demonstrate that CST Studio Suite simulations reveal a minimum reflection loss of −18.16 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (RL < −10 dB) of 3.75 GHz for the 2 mm-thick composite plate when the MWCNT content is 2%. Through FDM fabrication and structural optimization, significant performance enhancements are achieved: The gradient honeycomb design with larger dimensions achieved an effective absorption bandwidth of 6.56 GHz and a minimum reflection loss of −32.60 dB. Meanwhile, the stacked stake structure exhibited a broader effective absorption bandwidth of 10.58 GHz, with its lowest reflection loss reaching −22.82 dB. This research provides innovative approaches for developing and manufacturing tailored lightweight electromagnetic wave-absorbing structures, which could be valuable for aerospace stealth technology and electromagnetic compatibility solutions. Thermal camouflage technologies manipulate heat fluxes to conceal objects from thermographic detection, offering potential solutions for thermal management in high-power-density electronics. Most reported approaches are aimed at scenarios where the target is not a heat source; however, any target with a non-zero temperature emits thermal radiation described by the Stefan–Boltzmann law since the thermal radiation of an object is proportional to the fourth power of its temperature (T4). To address this issue, this study proposes a thermal camouflage device that considers the influence of radiative thermal transfer from the target. The underlying principle involves maintaining synchronous heat transfer separately along both the device and background surfaces. Numerical simulation confirms the feasibility of this proposed thermal camouflage strategy. Moreover, by altering some parameters related to the target such as geometry, location, temperature, and surface emissivity, excellent performance can be achieved using this device. This work advances thermal management strategies for high-power electronics and infrared-sensitive systems, with applications in infrared stealth, thermal diagnostics, and energy-efficient heat dissipation. Aircraft, as electromagnetically complex targets, have radar cross-sections (RCSs) that are influenced by various factors, with the inlet duct being a critical component that often serves as a primary source of electromagnetic scattering, significantly impacting the scattering characteristics. In light of the conflict between aerodynamic performance and electromagnetic characteristics in the design of aircraft engine inlet grilles, this paper proposes a metasurface radar-absorbing inlet grille (RIG) solution based on a NACA symmetric airfoil. The RIG adopts a sandwich structure consisting of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) dielectric substrate, a copper zigzag metal strip array, and an indium tin oxide (ITO) resistive film. By leveraging the principles of surface plasmon polaritons, electromagnetic wave absorption can be achieved. To enhance the design efficiency, a multi-objective Bayesian optimization framework driven by the expected hypervolume improvement (EHVI) is constructed. The results show that, compared with a conventional rectangular cross-section grille, an airfoil-shaped grille under the same constraints will reduce both aerodynamic losses and the absorption bandwidth. After 100-step EHVI–Bayesian optimization, the optimized balanced model attains a 57.79% reduction in aerodynamic loss relative to the rectangular-shaped grille, while its absorption bandwidth increases by 111.99%. The RCS exhibits a reduction of over 8.77 dBsm in the high-frequency band. These results confirm that the proposed optimization design process can effectively balance the conflict between aerodynamic performance and stealth performance for RIGs, reducing the signal strength of aircraft engine inlets. Investigating the coupled hydrodynamic and thermal wakes induced by underwater vehicles is vital for non-acoustic detection and environmental monitoring. Here, the standard SUBOFF model is simulated under eight operating conditions—speeds of 10, 15, and 20 kn; depths of 10, 20, and 30 m; and both with and without thermal discharge—using Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) coupled with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. Results indicate that, under heat emission conditions, higher speeds accelerate wake temperature decay, making the thermal wake difficult to detect downstream; without heat emission, turbulent mixing dominates the temperature field, and speed effects are minor. With increased speed, wake vorticity at a fixed location grows by about 30%, free-surface wave height rises from 0.05 to 0.15 m, and wavelength remains around 1.8 m, all positively correlated with speed. Dive depth is negatively correlated with wave height, decreasing from 0.15 to 0.04 m as depth increases from 5 to 20 m, while wavelength remains largely unchanged. At a 10 m submergence depth, the thermal wake is clearly detectable on the surface but becomes hard to detect beyond 20 m, indicating a pronounced depth effect on its visibility. These results not only confirm the positive correlation between vessel speed and wake vorticity reported in earlier studies but also extend those findings by providing the first quantitative evaluation of how submergence depth critically limits thermal wake visibility beyond 20 m. This research provides quantitative evaluations of wake characteristics under varying speeds, depths, and heat emissions, offering valuable insights for stealth navigation and detection technologies.
