The rapid shift toward electric vehicles (EVs) has underscored the critical importance of battery pack crashworthiness, creating a demand for lightweight, energy-absorbing protective systems. This review systematically explores bio-inspired cellular structures as promising solutions for improving the impact resistance of EV battery packs. Inspired by natural geometries, these designs exhibit superior energy absorption, controlled deformation behavior, and high structural efficiency compared to conventional configurations. A comprehensive analysis of experimental, numerical, and theoretical studies published up to mid-2025 was conducted, with emphasis on design strategies, optimization techniques, and performance under diverse loading conditions. Findings show that auxetic, honeycomb, and hierarchical multi-cell architectures can markedly enhance specific energy absorption and deformation control, with improvements often exceeding 100% over traditional structures. Finite element analyses highlight their ability to achieve controlled deformation and efficient energy dissipation, while optimization strategies, including machine learning, genetic algorithms, and multi-objective approaches, enable effective trade-offs between energy absorption, weight reduction, and manufacturability. Persistent challenges remain in structural optimization, overreliance on numerical simulations with limited experimental validation, and narrow focus on a few bio-inspired geometries and thermo-electro-mechanical coupling, for which engineering solutions are proposed. The review concludes with future research directions focused on geometric optimization, multi-physics modeling, and industrial integration strategies. Collectively, this work provides a comprehensive framework for advancing next-generation crashworthy battery pack designs that integrate safety, performance, and sustainability in electric mobility. Spatial heterogeneity in soil deposition poses a significant challenge to accurate geotechnical characterization, which is essential for sustainable infrastructure development. This study presents an advanced geotechnical data-driven mapping framework, based on a monotonized and augmented formulation of Shepard’s inverse distance weighting (IDW) algorithm, implemented through the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The approach is rigorously evaluated through a comparative analysis against the classical IDW and Kriging techniques using standard key performance indices (KPIs). Comprehensive field and laboratory data repositories were developed in accordance with international geotechnical standards (e.g., ASTM). Key geotechnical parameters, i.e., standard penetration test (SPT-N) values, shear wave velocity (Vs), soil classification, and plasticity index (PI), were used to generate high-resolution geospatial models for a previously unmapped region, thereby providing essential baseline data for building infrastructure design. The results indicate that the augmented IDW approach exhibits the best spatial gradient conservation and local anomaly detection performance, in alignment with Tobler’s First Law of Geography, and outperforms Kriging and classical IDW in terms of predictive accuracy and geologic plausibility. Compared to classical IDW and Kriging, the augmented IDW algorithm achieved up to a 44% average reduction in the RMSE and MAE, along with an approximately 30% improvement in NSE and PC. The difference in spatial areal coverage was found to be up to 20%, demonstrating an improved capacity to model spatial subsurface heterogeneity. Thematic design maps of the load intensity (LI), safe bearing capacity (SBC), and optimum foundation depth (OD) were constructed for ready application in practical design. This work not only establishes the inadequacy of conventional geostatistical methods in highly heterogeneous soil environments but also provides a scalable framework for geotechnical mapping with accuracy in data-poor environments. The burgeoning economic relationship between Türkiye and Poland, marked by a targeted $10 billion trade volume, has catalyzed significant Turkish engagement in the Polish construction sector. Ranked second globally in international contracting, Turkish firms are increasingly undertaking complex infrastructure projects in Poland, making it a critical European market to analyze. This study develops a comprehensive framework to identify and evaluate the sources of sustainable competitive advantage for Turkish contractors operating in this dynamic environment. The research adopts a qualitative, single-case study methodology, centered on the extensive project portfolio of a leading Turkish firm in Poland. The analytical approach is twofold. First, it employs Porter’s Diamond Framework to deconstruct the existing competitive advantages, revealing a shift from traditional low-cost models to a sophisticated synergy of superior labor management capabilities, strategic local partnerships, and expertise in complex project delivery. These strengths are shown to align directly with Poland’s critical needs, particularly its skilled labor shortage and ambitious infrastructure agenda. Second, a Foresight Analysis is conducted to map plausible future scenarios through 2035, addressing key uncertainties such as geopolitical shifts and the pace of technological adoption. The findings demonstrate that the sustained success of Turkish contractors hinges on their ability to deliver targeted value. The study concludes by proposing a set of “no-regrets” strategies—including accelerated ESG and digital up-skilling, forging deep local partnerships, and developing financial engineering capabilities—designed to secure and enhance their competitive positioning. The results provide an actionable roadmap for industry practitioners and valuable insights for policymakers fostering bilateral economic collaboration. Full article

The global imperative for sustainable energy has catalyzed the pursuit of next-generation energy storage technologies that are intrinsically safe, economically viable, and scalable. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) present a promising solution to meet these demands. However, the metallic Zn anode, the heart of this technology, suffers from fundamental electrochemical instabilities—manifesting as dendrite growth and rampant parasitic reactions (e.g., corrosion and passivation)—that critically curtail battery lifespan and impede practical application. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the latest strategies designed to achieve a highly reversible and stable Zn anode. We meticulously categorize and analyze these innovations through the three integral components of the AZIBs: (i) intrinsic anode engineering, (ii) interfacial electrolyte chemistry regulation, and (iii) separator-induced transport modulation. By delving into the core scientific mechanisms and critically evaluating each approach, this work synthesizes a holistic understanding of the structure-property-performance relationships. We conclude by identifying the persistent challenges and, more importantly, proposing visionary perspectives on future research directions. This review aims to serve as a scientific guide for the rational design of highly reversible Zn anodes, paving the way for the next generation of high-performance, commercially viable aqueous batteries. Targeting the classification and evaluation of chemical flooding well groups in medium-thick sandstone reservoirs (single-layer thickness: 5–15 m), this study proposes a multi-level classification model based on decision trees. Through the comprehensive analysis of key static factors influencing chemical flooding efficiency, a four-tier classification index system was established, comprising: interlayer/baffle development frequency (Level 1), thickness-weighted permeability rush coefficient (Level 2), reservoir rhythm characteristics (Level 3), and pore-throat radius-based reservoir connectivity quality (Level 4) as its core components. The model innovatively transforms common reservoir physical parameters (porosity and permeability) into pore-throat radius parameters to enhance guidance for polymer molecular weight design, while employing a thickness-weighted permeability rush coefficient to simultaneously characterize heterogeneity impacts from both permeability and thickness variations. Unlike existing classification methods primarily designed for thin-interbedded reservoirs—which consider only connectivity or apply fuzzy mathematics-based normalization—this model specifically addresses medium-thick reservoirs’ unique challenges of interlayer development and intra-layer heterogeneity. Furthermore, its decision tree architecture clarifies classification logic and significantly reduces data preprocessing complexity. In terms of engineering practicality, the classification results are directly linked to well-group development bottlenecks, as validated in the J16 field application. By implementing customized chemical flooding formulations tailored to the study area, the production performance in the expansion zone achieved comprehensive improvement: daily oil output dropped from 332 tons to 243 tons, then recovered to 316 tons with sustained stabilization. Concurrently, recognizing that interlayer barriers were underdeveloped in certain well groups during production layer realignment, coupled with strong vertical heterogeneity posing polymer channeling risks, targeted profile modification and zonal injection were implemented prior to flooding conversion. This intervention elevated industrial replacement flooding production in the study area from 69 tons to 145 tons daily post-conversion. This framework provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing chemical flooding pilot well-group selection, scheme design, and dynamic adjustments, offering significant implications for enhancing oil recovery in medium-thick sandstone reservoirs through chemical flooding. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are increasingly recognized as decisive actors in photocatalytic redox chemistry, dictating both the selectivity and efficiency of target reactions, while most photocatalytic systems generate a mixture of ROS under illumination. Recent studies have revealed that tailoring the generation of specific ROS, rather than maximizing the overall ROS yield, holds the key to unlocking high-performance and application-specific catalysis. In this context, the selective production of specific ROS has emerged as a critical requirement for achieving target-oriented and sustainable photocatalytic transformations. Among the various photocatalytic materials, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has garnered considerable attention due to its metal-free composition, visible-light response, tunable structure, and chemical robustness. More importantly, the tunable band structure, surface chemistry, and interfacial environment of PCN collectively make it an excellent scaffold for the controlled generation of specific ROS. In recent years, numerous strategies including molecular doping, defect engineering, heterojunction construction, and co-catalyst integration have been developed to precisely tailor the ROS profile derived from PCN-based systems. This review provides a comprehensive overview of ROS regulation in PCN-based photocatalysis, with a focus on type-specific strategies. By classifying the discussion according to the major ROS types, we highlight the mechanisms of their formation and the design principles that govern their selective generation. In addition, we discuss representative applications in which particular ROS play dominant roles and emphasize the potential of PCN systems in achieving tunable and efficient photocatalytic performance. Finally, we outline key challenges and future directions for developing next-generation ROS-regulated PCN photocatalysts, particularly in the context of reaction selectivity, dynamic behavior, and practical implementation. Plastic pollution has emerged as a critical environmental challenge due to the widespread accumulation of petrochemical plastics in natural ecosystems. Conventional waste management strategies, including mechanical recycling and incineration, have demonstrated limited efficiency in addressing the persistence of plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinyl chloride. While incineration eliminates plastic material, it does not promote circularity and may generate toxic emissions. As a sustainable alternative, microbial biodegradation involves bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes capable of degrading synthetic polymers through enzymatic processes. This review provides a comprehensive overview of microbial degradation of major plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyvinyl chloride, highlighting key strains, degradation rates, and enzymatic mechanisms. Importantly, biodegradation research also informs the development of in situ remediation technologies and supports new recycling strategies. Advances in protein engineering and synthetic biology are discussed for enhancing degradation efficiency. However, scaling biodegradation to environmental conditions remains challenging due to variable temperature, pH, microbial competition, and potentially toxic intermediates. Despite these limitations, microbial biodegradation represents a promising ecofriendly approach to address plastic waste and promote a biobased circular economy. Future work should integrate microbial processes into existing recycling infrastructure and design robust consortia guided by omics tools. Full article

This paper analyzes the long-term thermal effect of newly applied fiber-reinforced concrete link slabs on an existing steel bridge for a rehabilitation project of the Maryland Transportation Authority. To enhance structural resilience, thermal movement is one of the major concerns in concrete link slab design. To accommodate the global thermal expansion of a full bridge, the existing fixed bearings were modified to expansion bearings to release the longitudinal thermal movement of the super-structure. Their movements were measured by the installed LVDT devices. In this pilot study for the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), engineered cementitious composite (ECC) and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) were selected as candidate materials for link slabs to replace traditional steel expansion joints. To evaluate the performances of ECC and UHPC, built-in strain gauges were implemented for long-term field monitoring to ensure the durability of link slabs. For comparison, the measured data were collected over two full years to study their thermal effects in order to evaluate their sustainability. The novelty of the study is in comparing the performance of different materials side-by-side using true sensor measurements and numerical simulation. Thermal movement performance, including thermal cracking, will be one of the major selection criteria for the link slab material. Full article

A lunar landing pad (LLP) represents essential initial infrastructure for establishing sustainable lunar settlements. This study investigates the feasibility of constructing LLPs through in situ resource utilization (ISRU), focusing on an innovative composite material comprising lunar regolith and the high-performance thermoplastic Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK). The proposed manufacturing approach involves mechanically blending regolith with PEEK granules, compacting the mixture in a mold, and thermally processing it to induce polymer melting and binding. Experimental analysis indicates that a modest binder fraction (15 wt. % PEEK) yields a robust composite with a flexural strength of 14.6 MPa, although exhibiting inherently brittle characteristics. Compaction pressure emerges as a crucial factor influencing material performance. Utilizing these findings, hexagonal modular tiles were designed as the fundamental LLP elements, specifically engineered to optimize manufacturing simplicity, mechanical robustness, stackability for redundancy, and ease of replacement or repair. The tile geometry strategically mitigates brittleness-induced vulnerabilities by avoiding stress concentrations. Explicit finite element analyses validated tile performance under simulated lunar landing conditions corresponding to the European Large Logistic Lander specifications. Results demonstrated safe landing velocities between 0.1 and 0.7 m/s, governed by the binder content and compaction pressure. A clearly identified linear correlation between the binder fraction and permissible impact velocity enables predictive tailoring of the material composition, confirming the suitability and scalability of thermoplastic–regolith composites for future lunar infrastructure development. In the search for lightweight and sustainable engineering approaches, enhancing the surface wear resistance of structural materials, such as 6061-T6 aluminum alloy, has become increasingly important. This study investigates the effect of coverage rates on the tribological properties of shot-peened 6061-T6 alloy, aiming to improve its usage in industries where weight reduction and durability are important, such as aerospace, automotive, railway, and renewable energy systems. A shot peening process was applied at four different coverage rates of 100%, 200%, 500%, and 1500% for comprehensive evaluation. A series of experimental analyses were conducted, including microhardness tests, ball-on-plate wear tests, residual stress measurements, and surface roughness evaluations. Furthermore, microstructural analysis was performed to investigate subsurface deformation, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out to identify the wear mechanisms of the worn surfaces in detail. The results demonstrated a clear trend of gradual improvement in wear resistance with increasing shot peen coverage. The sample treated at a 1500% coverage rate exhibited 1.34 times higher hardness and 19 times higher wear resistance compared to the untreated sample. This study highlights that shot peening is an effective and feasible surface engineering method for enhancing the wear performance of 6061-T6 alloy. The findings offer valuable contributions for the development of lightweight and wear-resistant components considering sustainable material design. Full article

With the global climate warming, the temperature conditions in permafrost regions have changed significantly, and the stability of permafrost slopes is facing serious threats. This paper focuses on the construction of the instability mechanism and prediction model of permafrost slopes considering the influence of temperature. By analyzing the thermokarst collapse process of permafrost slopes, the characteristics and causes of stages such as the soil loosening period and the surface sloughing period were studied. Based on the Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion, combined with the simplified Bishop method and the Morgenstern–Price method, a mechanical analysis of the critical state was carried out, and a safety factor formula applicable to the critical state of permafrost slopes was derived. From the curves of the total cohesion and effective internal friction angle of the experimental soil changing with temperature, an influence model of temperature on the strength parameters was fitted. Considering the factor of freeze–thaw cycles, a safety factor model for permafrost slopes was constructed. Through a large amount of data calculation and analysis of the model, the reliability of the model was verified. This model can be used to predict slope states in practical assessments and optimize slope support structure design parameters in cold regions, providing important references for ensuring engineering safety, reducing geological disasters, and promoting sustainability in cold regions. Finally, potential mitigation measures for frozen soil slope instability based on the findings are briefly discussed. Full article
