In the context of occupational environments and sustainable employment, this review explores the effects of declining workers’ health, environmental degradation, and the depletion of marine resources on workers’ psychological well-being. As seas and oceans are increasingly exploited and used as dumping sites for both solid and liquid waste, marine ecosystems are severely degraded, with negative impacts on biodiversity, water quality, and ecosystem processes. Marine biodiversity is crucial to maintaining global food security and supporting the livelihoods of millions of people worldwide. Moreover, this study examines the role of digital technology in the marine industry in safeguarding workers’ sustainable well-being. It emphasizes the complementary roles of law and technology in promoting it. The risks to the health and well-being of marine workers are greatly increased by the occupational consequences of climate change on the sustainable environment and the effects of working in marine environments. Working conditions, incomes, and even unemployment among marine workers have been directly affected by the degradation of marine environments and the depletion of marine resources. Anxiety, panic, depression, rage, and other unpleasant emotions that affect workers’ health and pose mental health risks are detrimental to the psychological well-being of marine workers. The challenges of employment in the marine industry adversely affect the physical and mental well-being of marine employees and hinder economic growth. However, digital technology in marine environments has fundamentally altered the regulations governing marine operations. Full article

This study was designed to evaluate and explore the ecosystem-based adaptation practices for climate resilience with evidence from smallholder farmers’ perceptions of co-benefits and adoption decisions in Mabalane district, Mozambique. Ecosystem-based adaptation practice emerged as a sustainable approach to enhance rainfed smallholder farmers’ climate resilience while delivering multiple social, economic and environmental co-benefits. This study evaluated and explored the perceived co-benefits from adopting ecosystem-based adaptation practices and examined how they shape adoption decisions among the rainfed smallholder farmers. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining a household survey of 360 farm household heads, key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The main findings of the study revealed mixed cropping (83.9%), integrated crop-livestock (57.2%), and mulch tillage (51.1%) as the most adopted practices, as well as smallholder farmers perceiving multiple ecological and socio-economical co-benefits from adopting ecosystem-based adaptation practices. Although the study confirmed statistically significant relationships between ecosystem-based adaptation practices and the perceived co-benefits, none of the perceived co-benefits were significantly associated with an increase in the number of the adopted practices. Therefore, it is concluded that adoption decisions among smallholder farmers are not shaped by perceived ancillary benefits from ecosystem-based adaptation practices alone, but a combination of enabling conditions and resources endowments. Sri Lanka provides a home for a significant number of fruit species, and yet most of them are underutilised due to a lack of awareness regarding their therapeutic potential. Different plant parts from these fruits have been used for centuries to cure various diseases in traditional medicine, as fodder and to overcome hunger. Despite having remarkable health benefits and being resistant to extreme environmental conditions, these fruits are still confined to home gardens and forests, while some commercially cultivated major fruits remain dominant in the market. Hence, gathering information on the nutritional and health benefits of these fruit species will enhance people’s awareness, ensure food security through value-added food product development, facilitate livelihoods for rural farmers and also establish long-term sustainability. The main objective of this review is to highlight the phytochemical potential of some underutilised fruit varieties in Sri Lanka while exploring their health-promoting aspects, including antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective properties. Many research studies have been conducted on commonly available major fruits. However, there is a notable gap in research that explores pharmacological aspects of these fruits. Further research is warranted in developing methods for sustainable harvesting and postharvest practices for underutilised fruits from Sri Lanka. Characterisation of health benefits associated with underutilised fruits will help to develop awareness about their potential and possibly foster commercial interest. Developing nutraceuticals or functional foods from these fruits will help us to focus on enhancing their sustainable production. Full article

Soil contamination in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is increasingly driven by rapid industrialization, intensive agriculture, mining activities, and urban expansion, posing significant risks to food safety, ecosystem services, and human livelihoods. Despite the growing scale of the problem, low-cost, locally adaptable remediation technologies are widely available and technically feasible within the region. Organic waste and waste-derived products—such as compost, manure, biochar, vermicompost, digestate, and agro-industrial residues—have emerged as sustainable and cost-effective amendments for the remediation of contaminated soils. These materials can immobilize heavy metals, enhance the microbial degradation of organic pollutants, and improve soil health, making them especially suitable for resource-constrained settings. This review synthesizes the current knowledge on the use of organic waste-based remediation approaches in SSA, highlighting technologies already applied at the laboratory, pilot, and field scales, as well as their effectiveness across different contaminant types. However, despite their demonstrated potential, their widespread adoption remains limited. The primary challenge is not the absence of affordable solutions, but rather the systemic constraints characteristic of many SSA countries, including limited technical capacity, weak policy and regulatory frameworks, low stakeholder awareness, and insufficient financial and institutional support for large-scale implementation. To enable broader uptake, there is a need to strengthen waste segregation and treatment systems, standardize composting and pyrolysis processes, and develop robust regulatory guidelines and certification schemes. Investments in monitoring infrastructure, practitioner training, and knowledge transfer mechanisms will also be critical to translating scientific advances into scalable, field-ready solutions for sustainable soil remediation in SSA. Global environmental norms increasingly shape commodity governance in the Global South, with the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) representing a prominent attempt to govern land-based products through extraterritorial sustainability criteria. This study examines how such norms are received, reinterpreted, negotiated, and resisted in Indonesia’s palm oil sector, focusing on smallholder-dominated value chains in Serdang Bedagai and Simalungun, North Sumatra. Centered on everyday resistance and policy decoupling as its core interpretive lenses, and drawing on habitus as a supporting concept, the study employs qualitative fieldwork, in-depth interviews, field observations, and critical discourse analysis to investigate tensions between deforestation-free supply chain expectations and local realities marked by fragmented landholdings, informal tenure, intermediary dependence, and cashflow-oriented livelihood strategies. The findings show that the EUDR is widely perceived not as a sustainability opportunity, but as an externally imposed regulatory pressure that threatens income stability and market access. Local actors respond through discursive reframing, continued reliance on informal trading practices, and partial or symbolic implementation of legality and traceability requirements. The study argues that inclusive deforestation-free governance requires differentiated obligations, transitional legality pathways, and cooperative-based traceability mechanisms that better align global norms with local institutional capacity and livelihood structures. The urban trade in non-timber forest products (NTFPs) plays a key role in sustaining livelihoods in the Global South, while also suggesting potential pressure on resource supply systems. This study provides an integrated analysis of NTFP diversity, market structure, economic importance, and perceived drivers of resource decline in Kolwezi, a rapidly expanding mining city where such dynamics remain poorly documented. Data were collected through surveys conducted with 35 sellers across two major urban markets and 384 consumers from different neighbourhoods and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics to examine patterns, associations, and socio-demographic influences. A total of 65 NTFP species were recorded, including 49 plant, 14 animal, and 2 fungal species, reflecting strong dependence on Miombo ecosystems. Medicinal (59.3%) and food uses dominate, with multifunctional species such as Bobgunnia madagascariensis (Desv.) J.H.Kirkbr. & Wiersama, Canarium schweinfurthii Engl., Terminalia mollis M.A.Lawson, Gardenia ternifolia subsp. jovis-tonantis (Welw.) Verdc., and Albizia antunesiana Harms, playing a central role in both household use and market supply. The trade is largely female-dominated (79.1%) and constitutes a major component of the informal urban economy, with monthly incomes ranging from USD 9 to 429.3, primarily driven by sales volume rather than unit price. However, the sector is constrained by structural and logistical limitations, including remoteness of supply areas, seasonality, and limited value addition. The perceived declining availability of high-use-value species, attributed by respondents to deforestation, mining expansion, and overexploitation, highlights perceived sustainability concerns. These pressures are perceived differently across socio-demographic groups, indicating heterogeneous understandings of environmental change. Overall, the results indicate a perceived mismatch between rising urban demand and declining resource availability, which may reflect an emerging socio-ecological imbalance between urban demand and perceived resource availability. Addressing these challenges requires integrated strategies that combine the domestication of priority species, the development of processing chains, improved infrastructure, and strengthened governance mechanisms. Such approaches are essential to reconcile livelihood support with the sustainable management of NTFPs in rapidly transforming urban landscapes. Full article

Ecological civilization construction (ECC) represents a critical pathway for improving public health and advancing sustainable social development, exerting a positive and profound influence on population health. This study treats the establishment of national ecological civilization pilot zones as a quasi-natural experiment. Drawing on microdata from the 2014–2020 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) and applying a difference-in-differences (DID) model, it investigates the impact of ECC on residents’ physical and mental health. The results reveal that (1) ECC significantly improves residents’ physical and mental health, and this finding remains robust after a series of validation tests; (2) mechanism analysis shows that ECC enhances health primarily through three channels: environmental, livelihood, and economic effects; (3) heterogeneity analysis demonstrates that ECC can effectively mitigate health inequalities associated with gender, urban–rural divides, and social status differences. In summary, the study provides valid empirical evidence that ECC can contribute to improvements in population health, reductions in health disparities, and the sustainable development of a healthy society. A symbiotic mechanism exists between household livelihood capital and land use transition (LUT). However, previous studies have seldom examined, from a macro perspective, the characteristics of household livelihood capital and its impact on LUT, lacking an in-depth analysis of the spatial spillover effects and regional heterogeneity. Household livelihood capital influences LUT by shaping livelihood strategies. This article incorporates psychological capital into the Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) and utilizes data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) database and land use data spanning 24 provincial-level administrative units in China from 2010 to 2022; this study employs the Spatial Durbin Model to empirically analyze the impact of household livelihood capital on LUT and its regional variability, along with the spatiotemporal evolution patterns of household livelihood capital and land use change. The results demonstrate the following: (1) From 2010 to 2022, household livelihood capital increased, with higher levels of psychological, natural, and human capital, while social, financial, and physical capital were lower. The eastern region exhibited higher livelihood capital levels than the central and western regions, but the gap narrowed annually. (2) Between 2010 and 2022, LUT primarily involved the transition of cropland to construction land, cropland to forest and grassland, and forest and grassland to cropland. The intensity of LUT increased over time and showed a spatial gradient from west to east. (3) LUT positively affected the LUT of adjacent provinces. Various forms of capital and livelihood strategies had different effects on LUT within a province and across neighboring provinces. (4) The heterogeneity analysis reveals that the eastern region is significantly affected by the competitive effect and the spillover effect from neighboring provinces, while the central and western regions are constrained by water resources and inhibited by pure agricultural farmers. The article reveals the mechanism through which household livelihood capital drives LUT and the spatial spillover patterns, providing scientific evidence for regionally differentiated land management and ecological compensation policies, which is of great importance for the sustainable use of regional land resources. The dominant agri-food system’s well-documented failures—biodiversity loss, deepening rural inequalities, and the erosion of small-scale farming livelihoods—have elevated SSE initiatives and social innovation in the agri-food sector and bioeconomy from a niche policy concern to a structural priority. This paper examines how SSE arrangements drive meaningful transformation in agri-food chains while advancing sustainable development at local and regional scales. Through a narrative review of interdisciplinary peer-reviewed literature and key institutional sources, the paper synthesizes evidence that SSE initiatives generate transformation through three interconnected mechanisms: (a) the reconfiguration of governance structures; (b) the deepening of producer–consumer relationships through spatial proximity and relational transparency; and (c) the more equitable redistribution of value across agri-food territories. These findings suggest that place-based SSE models occupy a central—rather than peripheral—role in sustainability transitions and local development. The paper presents a structured analytical framework linking SSE practices to agri-food chain transformation and develops nine concrete policy implications for scaling and sustaining SSE innovations through coordinated collaboration among public, private, and social economy stakeholders. The findings contribute to a sharper understanding of the conditions under which SSE-driven models can foster sustainable, socially inclusive, and community-oriented agri-food systems and of why the solidarity dimension, rather than organisational form alone, is the decisive criterion for identifying genuinely transformative initiatives. This article investigates the relevance of selected and adapted representations of Krishna from the broader ISKCON tradition for sustainable and self-sufficient practices within Krishna Valley. Krishna Valley is an ISKCON community established in 1993 in the remote areas of Hungary, and it covers 300 hectares. As a self-sufficient and sustainable community, it is part of the Global Environmental Network, and as an ISKCON community, it belongs to the global movement of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. The synchronic interconnections of Krishna Valley as an ecovillage and as a religious place intertwine in the same place. In this article, Krishna Valley serves as an explanatory case study to investigate the relevance of ISKCON religious representations for ecological imagination: the process of perceiving relationships through the use of metaphors, images, narratives, symbols, and sematic frames that are central to and constitutive of human ecological thinking. This study uses two units of analysis (cow service and water management) to explore how in Krishna Valley ecological imagination takes shape in the interaction between local sustainable and self-sufficient practices and specific religious representations that are part of the ISKCON tradition. By looking at how the community interprets and treats cows and water pollution from a religious and environmental perspective, this case study answers the question of how ecovillages might benefit from religion-based ecological imagination for their sustainable livelihoods. Postharvest losses in Pacific Island Countries remain a significant challenge, affecting food security and farmers’ livelihoods. Limited research exists on horticultural handling practices in the region, particularly on taro corm bruising. This study characterised defects in taro corms caused by poor physical handling using a simulated laboratory drop test with two drop heights (1 m and 2 m), two drop frequencies (1 and 4 drops), and three storage durations (3, 5, and 7 days). It examined the combined effects of the drop test on external bruising, internal bruise depth, bruise severity scores, and visible decay incidence. Data were collected using the laboratory drop test, samples of farmer-handled taro, and farmer interviews. The results showed that the increased drop height and repeated impacts significantly increased severity, depth, and length over time. Corms subjected to the higher drop height (2 m) exhibited greater tissue breakdown; by day 7, corms dropped from 2 m had approximately 47% greater bruise depth than those dropped from 1 m. Statistical analysis confirmed that the drop height, the storage duration, and the drop frequency were key determinants of postharvest deterioration (p < 0.05). Mechanical stress also weakened corm integrity, increasing susceptibility to infection and decay. These findings underscore the need for improved postharvest handling practices, such as minimising free-fall distances, using padded storage and adopting better sorting methods to reduce mechanical injury. Enhancing these practices could substantially reduce food loss, extend taro shelf life and improve marketability, thereby supporting more resilient and sustainable food systems and contributing to food security and economic stability for taro farmers in the Pacific. Demand for camel milk products is growing in Morocco and worldwide, creating opportunities to strengthen the livelihoods of populations living in arid regions through the development of camel-based dairy value chains. In addition to their economic potential, such value chains may contribute to sustainability by supporting food systems adapted to arid environments, promoting the use of locally resilient livestock species, and enhancing the socio-economic viability of vulnerable rural communities. This exploratory qualitative study investigates urban consumer behavior related to dairy consumption with a specific focus on the potential integration of camel milk products into local dietary habits. To capture nuanced consumer perspectives, gender-segregated focus-group discussions were conducted in three Moroccan cities using a semi-structured questionnaire on dairy consumption habits. Key factors examined included milk types, product preferences, purchasing locations, consumption frequency and willingness to include camel products in the household diet. The results indicate that camel milk is rarely consumed outside areas where camels are raised. Nevertheless, participants expressed interest in several camel milk-based products, particularly fermented milk and spreadable cheeses. This interest was primarily driven by perceptions of camel milk as a healthy product and by its association with traditional food practices. These findings suggest that expanding camel milk consumption in urban markets could support more sustainable and territorially rooted dairy systems by linking consumer demand with production models suited to dryland conditions. This study indicates promising market opportunities for the development of camel milk products in urban areas, particularly if challenges related to pricing strategies, distribution network, and region-specific supply chains are strategically managed. Indigenous territories in Amazonia sustain forest cover through the practice of swidden-fallow agriculture, yet declining land availability threatens both the ecological sustainability of this agricultural system and its contributions to community livelihoods. While scholars recognize land scarcity’s potential to drive transformations in shifting cultivation systems, we lack a systematic understanding of how local institutional frameworks shape heterogeneous responses to resource constraints. This study examines how land access mechanisms, distribution dynamics and property regimes among Indigenous communities mediate experiences of and adaptations to land scarcity in the Peruvian Amazon. We conducted a comparative case study of Solidaridad and Tamboruna, two land-scarce Indigenous communities in Peru’s Napo River basin, employing mixed methods including household surveys (n = 74), plot-level assessments, and qualitative interviews with community leaders. Our findings reveal three critical pathways through which institutions mediate scarcity outcomes. First, land access mechanisms determine whether scarce resources produce equitable constraint or acute land inequality. Second, land use intensification emerges not from scarcity alone but from accumulated inequality and household labor capacity, with land accumulated over lifecycles showing stronger associations with management practices than initial endowments. Third, where scarcity manifests as extreme polarization, it precipitates renegotiation of land property norms shaped by Indigenous sociability and moral economies, defying straightforward trajectories toward either resource privatization or collective governance. These results demonstrate that land scarcity produces divergent trajectories mediated by community-specific institutions, with swidden-fallow systems likely diminishing their capacity to sustain forest regeneration in Indigenous communities where scarcity leads to acute land inequality. Rather than uniform solutions, sustainability policy must therefore tailor interventions to local institutional contexts—prioritizing territorial expansion, facilitating communities’ own governance development, and supporting household adaptive capacity to resource scarcity. Large-scale infrastructure development disrupts not only the material foundations of agrarian livelihoods but also the social and ecological systems through which households manage uncertainty. This study argues that the livelihood shifts observed among households affected by the construction of the Bili-Bili Reservoir in Lanna Sub-district, Gowa Regency, Indonesia, are best understood as products of contextual rationality operating at the individual level and enacted through household-level strategies. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach with 15 purposively selected informants, each representing a distinct household directly affected by the reservoir’s construction functioned as a structural shock that exceeded the adaptive capacity of the existing agrarian system, triggering differentiated household responses—including reservoir fisheries, small-scale trade, home-based enterprise, and labor migration—whose variation reflects systematic differences in individual skills, asset endowments, and social capital access rather than arbitrary or purely compelled choice. Theoretically, this study advances the sustainable livelihoods framework by specifying the mechanism linking individual rationality to household adaptive outcomes, and by showing how social capital—in its bonding, bridging, and linking dimensions—shapes the option set within which rational calculations are made. These findings suggest that post-displacement livelihood recovery is more effectively supported by policies that strengthen social network structures alongside physical and financial provision.
