Tyre wear is a major contributor to global microplastic pollution, affecting air, soil, water, and wildlife as well as human health. In the European Union (EU), the latest Euro 7 regulation foresees the introduction of tyre abrasion limits covering all tyre categories, referring to two testing methods (convoy on road or laboratory drum) developed by the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29). In this study, we applied the convoy method adopted by the UNECE Working Group on Noise and Tyres (GRBP) as part of the UN Regulation 117 on tyre performance parameters. The method has been developed by the Task Force on Tyre Abrasion (TFTA) of the UNECE and involves vehicles driving on public roads for about 8000 km. Candidate and reference tyres are fitted in a convoy of up to four vehicles, and an abrasion index for each candidate tyre is determined as a ratio of the abrasion of the candidate and reference tyres. In our tests, in addition to the abrasion rate, we measured the tread depth reduction and defined a service life index (i.e., total mileage potential) without the need of a different methodology. The results from six summer and nine winter C1 class passenger car tyres of various sizes showed a wide range of abrasion rates and service life values. We also compared our results with values reported in the literature and on websites. The conclusions of this study are expected to support the ongoing discussion on limit setting for C1 tyres and the definition of a service life index. Full article

The disposal of agro-industrial waste is a pressing environmental issue. At the same time, due to the high silica content in specific agricultural residues, their processed products can be utilised in various industrial sectors as substitutes for commercial materials. This study investigates the key technological, physico-mechanical, and viscoelastic properties of industrial elastomeric compounds based on synthetic styrene–butadiene rubber, intended for the tread of summer passenger car tyres, when replacing the commercially used highly reinforcing silica filler (SF), Extrasil 150VD brand (white carbon black), with a carbon–silica filler (CSF). The CSF is produced by carbonising a finely ground mixture of rice production waste (rice husks and stems) in a pyrolysis furnace at 550–600 °C without oxygen. It was found that replacing 20 wt.pts. of silica filler with CSF in industrial tread formulations improves processing parameters (Mooney viscosity increases by up to 5.3%, optimal vulcanisation time by up to 9.2%), resistance to plastic deformation (by up to 7.7%), and tackiness of the rubber compounds (by 31.3–34.4%). Viscoelastic properties also improved: the loss modulus and mechanical loss tangent decreased by up to 24.0% and 14.3%, respectively; the rebound elasticity increased by up to 6.3% and fatigue resistance by up to 2.7 thousand cycles; and the internal temperature of samples decreased by 7 °C. However, a decrease in tensile strength (by 10.7–27.0%) and an increase in wear rate (up to 43.3% before and up to 22.5% after thermal ageing) were observed. Nevertheless, the overall results of this study indicate that the CSF derived from the carbonisation of rice production waste—containing both silica and carbon components—can effectively be used as a partial replacement for the commercially utilised reinforcing silica filler in the production of tread rubber for summer passenger car tyres. The design of the suspension system affects handling and stability, vibrations of the steered wheels, vehicle ride comfort, and tyre tread wear. One of the most important vibration parameters is acceleration; high acceleration values can have an adverse effect on both the driver and passengers, as well as on the components of the vehicle’s suspension and handling. This paper presents the results of the effects of acceleration on the components of a front-independent MacPherson suspension system. Data on the accelerations were obtained from theoretical and experimental studies. A simulation study was conducted, taking into account the elastic and damping characteristics of the elastic components. The experimental study was conducted under laboratory conditions by using a suspension tester, BEISSBARTH, and a measuring system developed with LabVIEW 2021 SP1 and MATLAB R2022b software. The experiments were conducted with different tyre pressures and by using bushings made from different materials. The experimental tests were conducted with two rubber bushings within the mounting of the arm, as well as a rubber bushing and a polyurethane bushing. The experimental results were compared and analyzed. Two theoretical models were considered: one is a mathematical model, and the other is a simulation model which uses the finite element method. Tyre wear particles (TWPs), generated from tyre-road abrasion, are a pervasive and under-regulated environmental pollutant, accounting for a significant share of global microplastic contamination. Recent estimates indicate that 1.3 million metric tons of TWPs are released annually in Europe, dispersing via atmospheric transport, stormwater runoff, and sedimentation to contaminate air, water, and soil. TWPs are composed of synthetic rubber polymers, reinforcing fillers, and chemical additives, including heavy metals such as zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) and organic compounds like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD). These constituents confer persistence and bioaccumulative potential. While TWP toxicity in aquatic systems is well-documented, its ecological impacts on terrestrial environments, particularly in agricultural soils, remain less understood despite global soil loading rates exceeding 6.1 million metric tons annually. This review synthesizes global research on TWP sources, environmental fate, and ecotoxicological effects, with a focus on soil–plant systems. TWPs have been shown to alter key soil properties, including a 25% reduction in porosity and a 20–35% decrease in organic matter decomposition, disrupt microbial communities (with a 40–60% reduction in nitrogen-fixing bacteria), and induce phytotoxicity through both physical blockage of roots and Zn-induced oxidative stress. Human exposure occurs through inhalation (estimated at 3200 particles per day in urban areas), ingestion, and dermal contact, with epidemiological evidence linking TWPs to increased risks of respiratory, cardiovascular, and developmental disorders. Emerging remediation strategies are critically evaluated across three tiers: (1) source reduction using advanced tyre materials (up to 40% wear reduction in laboratory tests); (2) environmental interception through bioengineered filtration systems (60–80% capture efficiency in pilot trials); and (3) contaminant degradation via novel bioremediation techniques (up to 85% removal in recent studies). Key research gaps remain, including the need for long-term field studies, standardized mitigation protocols, and integrated risk assessments. This review emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing TWP pollution and offers guidance on sustainable solutions to protect ecosystems and public health through science-driven policy recommendations. Non-exhaust emissions from the wear of brakes, tyres, and roads have become an increasing concern in recent years, already surpassing exhaust emissions by mass in many countries. However, there is a lack of studies in the scientific literature on test methods that include both real tyre and road materials. This is crucial for accurately replicating the tribological mechanisms and resulting emissions that occur during real-world driving. This study therefore employs a scaled experimental approach to investigate the influence of representative urban load and sliding speed conditions on tyre and road wear particle generation using commercial tyre and road materials. Friction, wear, and emissions were analysed using a pin-on-disc tribometer within a controlled environment, enabling the measurement of both airborne and non-airborne wear particles. The results demonstrate that under moderate test conditions, airborne tyre and road wear particle concentrations remained almost zero, with reasonable coefficients of friction and estimated non-airborne emission factors. However, under harsher contact conditions, the coefficients of friction, airborne tyre and road wear concentrations and estimated emission factors increased significantly, leading to excessive material detachment from both the tyre and road surface. These extreme wear conditions are not representative of real-world tyre–road interactions, emphasising the sensitivity and necessity of using more realistic test conditions in future studies. The interaction of microplastics (MPs) with organic micropollutants, such as antibiotics, facilitates their transport in aquatic environments, increasing mobility and toxicological risk. The diverse polymer types, sizes, and shapes in wastewater present a challenge in understanding the fate of persistent organic micropollutants. This study examines ceftazidime adsorption on five polymer types—polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), hard and soft polystyrene (PS), hard and soft polyurethane (PU), and tyre wear particles (TWPs, including three passenger tyres and one truck tyre) in various forms (fibres, beads, foam, and fragments) and sizes (10–1000 µm). MPs underwent weathering (alkaline hydrolysis, UVC-activated H2O2, and Xenon lamp irradiation) to simulate environmental conditions. Their physical and chemical changes were analysed through mass loss, carbonyl index, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The adsorption values (mg g−1) for pristine and weathered MPs, respectively, were as follows: PET (0.664 and 1.432), PE (0.210 and 0.234), hard PS (0.17 and 0.24), soft PS (0.53 and 0.48), hard PU (0.19), soft PU (0.17), and passenger TWPs—Bridgestone (0.212), Michelin (0.273), Goodyear (0.288), and Kumho truck TWPs (0.495). The highest and lowest adsorption were observed in weathered PET (1.432 mg g−1) and pristine hard PS/soft PU (0.17 mg g−1), respectively. Sorption kinetics and isothermal models showed that aged MPs exhibited higher sorption due to surface cracks, fragmentation, and increased adsorption sites. These findings enhance scientific knowledge of MP–antibiotic interactions in wastewater and can underpin studies to mitigate MP pollution and their adverse effects on the environment and humans. Non-exhaust emissions from brakes and tyres are becoming the major transport-related contributor of particulate matter (PM) pollution in cities. Furthermore, tyre microplastics are the major contributor of unintentionally released microplastics in all environmental compartments. The European Union introduced for the first time worldwide limits for brakes (PM10) and tyres (total abrasion mass) with the Euro 7 regulatory step. Thus, the interest in brake and tyre particles regarding health and environmental impacts has significantly increased in recent years. In this review, we summarise studies that assessed the impact of brake and tyre particles on human, mammalian, aquatic, and terrestrial cells and organisms. Furthermore, we summarise the studies that compared the impact of brake and tyre particles to other sources. We also critically examine the sampling methodologies of brake and tyre particles for health and environmental impact studies. Full article

Tyre wear particles are a significant source of primary microplastics in the natural environment with the potential to accumulate in aquatic sediments, yet our understanding of the ecological impact of these particles is limited. Using mesocosms of estuarine sediment containing a model macrofauna community (Scrobicularia plana and Hediste diversicolor), meiofauna, and microphytobenthos, we investigated the impact of exposure to sedimentary tyre particles (0.2, 1, and 5% kg sediment(dw)−1) upon meiofauna community structure, primary production, secondary production, and nutrient fluxes. Under the conditions (13 °C) and timescale (31 days) investigated, exposure to sedimentary tyre particles did not lead to any significant differences in nutrients for primary productivity, with limited impact on meiofaunal secondary productivity. An increase in Tanaidacea was observed in 1% and 5% tyre particle treatments, putatively due to reduced macrofaunal predation. Previous studies have highlighted the ecotoxicity of tyre wear particles. The limited impacts on meiofauna may be due to our experimental particles being too large for meiofauna to ingest or the timescale of the experiment being too short to witness changes at the community scale. Impacts from tyre particle leachates were likely limited due to dilution in the partial recirculation system. Leachate dilution will occur naturally in marine systems and should be a consideration in the design of future studies. Full article

Technical retrofit Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDSs) are a suitable option in the numerous mitigation measures to reduce the amount of tyre wear entering the environment. In the study presented here, such a filter system was tested under extreme conditions at the ADAC Driving Safety Centre Berlin-Brandenburg. Despite a technical separation limit of 125 or 250 µm of the filter systems, particles > 6 µm were measured in the retained masses. In addition, the marker SBR was used to determine the residues of tyre wear in the filter system using the TED-GC-MS analysis method. The highest concentrations were found in the 20–63 µm fraction. The results indicate that tyre wear particles become smaller due to high forces generated by braking and cornering. Test stand investigations indicate a retention efficiency of the filter system of 2/3 of the tyre wear. Furthermore, the results show that the parameter ‘Total Suspended Solids < 63 µm’ (TSS63) is a relevant evaluation parameter for the road runoff. Full article

(1) Car tyre microplastic particles (TMPs) significantly contribute to global microplastic pollution, with an estimated annual production of 6 million tonnes. However, the impact of TMPs, particularly tyre and road wear particles (TRWPs), resulting from tyre abrasion on the road on terrestrial organisms, is poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of TMPs and TRWPs on the growth, immune response, behaviour, and cognition of the woodlouse Armadillidium pallasii over 30 days; (2) TMPs and TRWPs were mixed together in the first experiment and provided at different concentrations of 1.25%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10% (w/w), and with soil at 5% and 10% (w/w) concentrations in the second experiment. (3) No differences in survival or immune responses were observed in both experiments. However, isopods exposed to TRWPs showed significant weight gain at lower concentrations but no gain at higher levels. Behavioural tests revealed increased vigilance in TRWP-exposed animals. Micro-FTIR analysis showed that the number of TMPs and TRWPs in the isopods correlated with soil concentrations, and particle size decreased during the experiment. (4) The study highlights the physiological and behavioural effects of TRWPs and the role of detritivorous species in the biofragmentation of TMPs and TRWPs, contributing to the biogeochemical plastic cycle. Microplastics pollution is becoming a major environmental concern for air, soil, and water. The European Union (EU) Zero Pollution Action Plan targets to reduce microplastics release to the environment by 30% by 2030. Tyre wear is estimated to be the most important contributor to unintentionally released microplastics to the environment. For this reason, the new Euro 7 vehicle emission standard introduced placeholders for limiting tyre abrasion. In this study, we calculate the environmental pollution from tyres using as a basis a recent review on tyre wear emission factors. We also estimate the impact of reducing the average emission factors following the Euro 7 implementation dates. Additionally, we present the cost savings to the EU by such a reduction over a time horizon until 2050. Even though the final cost saving estimations come with some uncertainty due to lack of accurate and up-to-date emission factors, especially for heavy-duty vehicles, the introduction of tyre wear limits has a significant positive impact under all scenarios examined. As part of the “Waste2Energy: hybrid energy from waste as a sustainable solution for West-Africa” project, a tyre recycling plant is being constructed in Davié, north of Lomé, Togo. Understanding the tyre management chain is crucial for establishing the plant’s supply chain. This study aimed to highlight the gaps in and the importance of tyre recycling in Togo while assessing the potential of EoL tyres for the implementation of a tyre recycling plant. Togo’s vehicle fleet, predominantly concentrated in Lomé, is rapidly increasing at a rate of 6% per year, reaching an estimated 285,000 vehicles. Due to economic constraints and limited new tyre availability, most vehicle users opt for used tyres, which have a limited lifespan due to poor road conditions. An investigation of EoL tyre quantities and management chains in Togo was carried out. To evaluate the used and end-of-life tyre management chains, both direct observation and interviews with approximately 200 used-tyre dealers were conducted. The study revealed that, on average, drivers replace tyres every 7.4 months, generating between 30,525 t/a and 78,000 t/a of used tyres, 75% of which are replaced due to severe damage or wear. While the used tyre business is well organized, end-of-life tyre treatment is nearly non-existent, often involving dumping, open burning for metal recovery, or use in meat processing, causing environmental and health risks. To address these challenges, an 8 t/hr capacity tyre recycling plant is planned, based on estimated tyre availability and development opportunities for sustainable recycling in Togo. Full article

Tyre Wear under Urban, Rural, and Motorway Driving Conditions at Two Locations in Spain and China

The recently introduced Euro 7 emissions standard regulation foresees the addition of abrasion limits for tyres sold in the European Union. The measurement procedures for tyre abrasion are described in the newly introduced Annex 10 of the United Nations (UN) Regulation 117. However, the limits are not yet defined as there is no data available regarding the new procedure. For this reason, a market assessment campaign is ongoing under the auspices of the UN Task Force on Tyre Abrasion (TFTA). Recent reviews on the topic also concluded that there is a lack of studies measuring the abrasion rates of tyres. In this study, we measured the abrasion rate of one tyre model at two different locations (Spain and China) with the aim of deep diving into possible influencing factors. Additionally, wear rates were studied separately for urban, rural, and motorway routes to get more insight into the impact of the route characteristics. The abrasion rates varied from 22 mg/km to 123 mg/km per vehicle, depending on the route (urban, rural, motorway) and ambient temperature. The overall average trip abrasion rates were 75 mg/km and 45 mg/km per vehicle at the two locations, respectively. However, when corrected for the different ambient temperatures, the rates were 63 mg/km and 60 mg/km per vehicle, respectively. The impacts of other parameters, such as driving dynamics and road surface, on the final results are also discussed. The average tread depth reduction was estimated to be 0.8–1.4 mm every 10,000 km. Non-exhaust road transport emissions in cities contribute to poor air quality and have an impact on human health. This paper presents a new study of particles emitted by tyre wear in real driving conditions and gives their emission factors. The most frequently emitted particles were collected in urban, suburban and road areas. They were identified and analysed physically and chemically. Their level of toxicity is well known. An overall analysis of the measured pollutants was carried out to assess their emission factors in real driving situations. The highest emitting pollutants, considered separately, were found to have high emission factors. The values obtained exceed the Euro standard for vehicles but are below those of vehicles not equipped with particle filters. Significant test analysis confirmed that the inertia of chemical pollutants is homogeneous. Emission factors have also been provided for PM10 and PM2.5. These results should contribute to the emergence of future regulations of non-exhaust emissions and should help to analyse the exposure-impact relationship for particles from tyre wear. Full article

Effective emission control technologies and eco-friendly propulsion systems have been developed to decrease exhaust particle emissions. However, more work must be conducted on non-exhaust traffic-related sources such as tyre wear. The advent of automated vehicles (AVs) enables researchers and automotive manufacturers to consider ways to further decrease tyre wear, as vehicles will be controlled by the system rather than by the driver. In this direction, this work presents the formulation of an optimal control problem for the trajectory optimisation of automated articulated vehicles for tyre wear minimisation. The optimum velocity profile is sought for a predefined road path from a specific starting point to a final one to minimise tyre wear in fixed time cases. Specific boundaries and constraints are applied to the problem to ensure the vehicle’s stability and the feasibility of the solution. According to the results, a small increase in the journey time leads to a significant decrease in the mass loss due to tyre wear. The employment of articulated vehicles with low powertrain capabilities leads to greater tyre wear, while excessive increases in powertrain capabilities are not required. The conclusions pave the way for AV researchers and manufacturers to consider tyre wear in their control modules and come closer to the zero-emission goal. Full article
