Salvia fruticosa, S. officinalis, S. pomifera ssp. pomifera, S. ringens, and S. tomentosa have multiple potential uses in floriculture and the pharmaceutical industry, serving sustainable horticulture and landscaping. The aim was to develop effective asexual propagation protocols for the exploitation of the above species. Thus, the effect of cutting origin, season of cutting collection, and various indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) treatments on rooting stem cuttings was examined. Shoot-tip cuttings were collected either from greenhouse or wild mother plants, in November, February, May, and August and were treated either with Rhizopon dusting powder 0.5% w/w IBA or immersion for 1 min in 0–6000 mg L−1 IBA solution. The cuttings were then placed for rooting in a 1:1 (v/v) peat–perlite substrate, under mist, for 2 weeks and on the greenhouse bench in semi-shade for another 4 weeks. More efficient rooting was succeeded by cuttings, (i) of S. tomentosa, followed by S. fruticosa and S. pomifera ssp. pomifera, while S. officinalis was the most difficult to root, (ii) from greenhouse plants, (iii) collected in autumn or spring, and (iv) treated with Rhizopon dusting powder or 1500 mg L−1 IBA solution. Higher dry weight values of the rooted cuttings were found in autumn. Conclusively, rooting of Salvia spp. cuttings depended on species, mother plants’ physiological state, time of cutting collection, climatic conditions, and auxin application. Full article

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a fundamental role in soil fertility and ecosystem functioning. In calcareous soils, SOM quantification is often challenging due to carbonate interference. This study aimed to compare three common analytical methods for SOM determination: the Anne method, the modified Walkley–Black method, and the Loss on Ignition (LOI) method, with and without decarbonation. Twenty-five soil samples were collected from a calcareous parcel in the Bordj Bou Arreridj region (Algeria), and SOM content was analysed using all methods. The results revealed substantial variability in SOM content across methods, reflecting differences in sensitivity to carbonates and efficiency of organic carbon oxidation. The Anne method, considered the reference technique, yielded the highest mean SOM content (3.61%), followed by LOI without decarbonation (3.41%), the modified Walkley–Black method (2.96%), and LOI with decarbonation (2.55%). Strong correlations were observed between methods, particularly between the Anne method and LOI with decarbonation (R2 = 0.91), confirming the latter as a reliable alternative. Decarbonation significantly reduced SOM overestimation, as demonstrated by paired statistical tests and a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.95). Linear regression models were established to estimate SOM from LOI results, providing a cost-effective approach for rapid assessment. These findings highlight the importance of method selection according to soil type, the need for standardised protocols, and the value of LOI with decarbonation as a robust, practical, and economical method for SOM determination in calcareous soils. The prediction of thin-bedded, favorable sand bodies within the Triassic Baikouquan Formation fan delta on the western slope of the Mahu Sag is challenging due to their strong spatial heterogeneity. To address this, we propose an integrated workflow that synergizes seismic sedimentology with geologically constrained seismic inversion. This study leverages well logging, core data, and 3D seismic surveys. Initially, seismic attribute analysis and stratal slicing were employed to delineate sedimentary microfacies, revealing that the fan delta front subfacies comprises subaqueous distributary channels, interdistributary bays, and distal bars. Subsequently, the planform distribution of these microfacies served as a critical constraint for the Seismic Waveform Indicative Inversion (SWII), effectively enhancing the resolution for thin sand body identification. The results demonstrate the following: (1). Two NW-SE trending subaqueous distributary channel systems, converging near the BAI65 well, form the primary reservoirs. (2). The SWII, optimized by our workflow, successfully predicts high-quality sand bodies with a cumulative area of 159.2 km2, primarily located in the MAXI1, AIHU10, and AICAN1 well areas, as well as west of the MA18 well. This study highlights the value of integrating sedimentary facies boundaries as a geological constraint in seismic inversion, providing a more reliable method for predicting heterogeneous thin sand bodies and delineating future exploration targets in the Mahu Sag. Magnesium alloys, characterized by high specific strength and low density, have high potential for applications in transportation and aerospace. Nevertheless, ensuring the reliable joining of thin-walled components remains a major technical challenge. This study examines how rotational speed affects the microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded AZ61 magnesium alloy hollow profiles (3 mm thick), with particular focus on the underlying mechanisms. The results show that higher rotational speed during friction stir welding promotes dynamic recrystallization and weakens the basal texture. It also affects microstructural homogeneity, where an optimal rotational speed produces a relatively uniform hybrid microstructure consisting of refined recrystallized and un-recrystallized regions. This balance enhances both texture strengthening and microstructural optimization. The weld joint fabricated at a rotational speed of 1500 rpm showed the best overall mechanical properties, with ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation reaching peak values of 286.7 MPa, 154.7 MPa, and 9.7%, respectively. At this speed, the average grain size in the weld nugget zone was 4.92 μm, and the volume fraction of second-phase particles was 0.67%. This study establishes a critical process foundation for the reliable joining of thin-walled magnesium alloy structures. The optimized parameters serve as valuable guidelines for engineering applications in lightweight transportation equipment and aerospace manufacturing. Full article

This study applied a multi-analytical methodology involving Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, protein secondary structure determination, colorimetry, and texture analysis of milk images at a microscopic level to characterize 47 commercial cow and goat milk samples of different fat content (whole and light). Colorimetric measurements showed that hue values were significantly higher in light than in whole milks, providing a rapid marker of fat level, while microscopic image analysis indicated that whole milks had more heterogeneous textures with larger fat globules, whereas light milks were more homogeneous. ATR-FTIR spectra revealed lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates as the main constituents; lipid-associated bands were more intense in whole milks, whereas carbohydrate-associated bands, particularly at 1026–1028 cm−1, were stronger in cow milk. Protein secondary structure analysis confirmed β-parallel sheet as the predominant motif, with cow milk showing higher random coil and α-helix proportions and goat milk enriched in β-turn structures. Chemometric modeling using PCA and PLS-DA achieved robust classification of samples by species and fat content, while Receiver Operation Characteristics (ROC) analysis validated markers of differentiation. The combination of the above methodologies enables effective classification of cow’s and goat’s milk, offering a thorough product description. Full article

Buffer zones are essential for the protection of the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of World Heritage properties. In China, to address the limitations of the prevailing “two-line” delineation system for architectural heritage protection, this study introduces the concept of buffer zone as a new perspective on heritage management. Focusing on the Cao Family Compound—a representative residence of Shanxi Merchants—this research situates the site within a broader cultural network to fully articulate its historical and social values. The methodology unfolds in three phases: (1) comprehensive identification of 47 spatial elements contributing to the compound’s significance, through field investigation, literature review, analysis of historical imagery and architectural drawing, and oral history interview; (2) systematic evaluation of each element’s value contribution to the compound based on six criteria across two dimensions, employing the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Weighted Sum Method (WSM); (3) spatial visualization and hierarchical buffer zone delineation conducted via ArcGIS-based data modeling and the Natural Breaks classification method. This integrated approach establishes a holistic and structured framework that bridges architectural heritage with its setting, providing practical guidance for policymakers and conservation practitioners. Areas characterised by high ecological and cultural value are increasingly exposed to overtourism and intensifying land-use pressures, often exacerbated by mobility policies aimed at enhancing regional accessibility and promoting tourism. These dynamics create spatial tensions, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas such as those within the Natura 2000 network and Sites of Community Importance (SCIs), where intensified visitor flows, and infrastructure expansion can disrupt the balance between conservation and development. This study offers a geospatial analysis of the current state (2024) of such dynamics in the Lazio Region (Italy), evaluating the effects of mobility strategies on ecological vulnerability and tourism pressure. By applying isochrone-based accessibility modelling, GIS buffer analysis, and spatial overlays, the research maps the intersection of accessibility, heritage value, and environmental sensitivity. The methodology enables the identification of critical zones where accessibility improvements coincide with heightened ecological risk and tourism-related stress. The original contribution of this work lies in its integrated spatial framework, which combines accessibility metrics with indicators of ecological and heritage significance to visualise and assess emerging risk areas. The Lazio Region, distinguished by its heterogeneous landscapes and ambitious mobility planning initiatives, constitutes a significant case study for examining how policy-driven improvements in transport infrastructure may inadvertently exacerbate spatial disparities and intensify ecological vulnerabilities in peripheral and sensitive territorial contexts. The findings support the formulation of adaptive, place-based policy recommendations aimed at mitigating the unintended consequences of accessibility-led tourism strategies. These include prioritising soft mobility, enhancing regulatory protection in high-risk zones, and fostering coordinated governance across sectors. Ultimately, the study advances a replicable methodology to inform sustainable territorial governance and balance tourism development with environmental preservation. Full article

This study investigates whether and how corporate commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance can mitigate involutionary competition in China’s consumer electronics manufacturing industry. By constructing a quantifiable index of involutionary competition intensity and matching it with corporation-level ESG scores, we document a statistically significant negative association between ESG performance and the degree of involutionary competition. Mechanism analysis reveals that ESG mitigates involutionary competition through two primary channels: (1) differentiation strategies that reduce price-based competition and product homogeneity, and (2) market-order regulation that curbs opportunistic behaviour and raises R&D efficiency. A modest price increase is shown to be revenue-enhancing; moreover, random-forest simulations indicate that counter-involutionary competition efforts amplify the market-share gains from cooperative R&D expenditures, accelerating post-adjustment revenue growth. This transition generates simultaneous increases in corporate profits and corporation value, breaking the previous price ceiling and establishing a sustainable development loop. The findings provide actionable insights for shifting the industry from low-level rivalry to sustainable value creation. Full article

Assessment of the Relationship Between Haller Cells, Accessory Maxillary Ostium, and Maxillary Sinus Pathologies: A Cross-Sectional CBCT Study

Background/Objectives: Sinonasal anatomical variations, particularly Haller cells (HCs) and the accessory maxillary ostium (AMO), are critical structural factors that may increase surgical risks in dental and otorhinolaryngological (ENT) procedures and predispose individuals to chronic sinusitis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between HCs, AMO dimensions, maxillary sinus ostium, and sinus pathologies using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: In this cross-sectional retrospective study, CBCT images of 443 patients (226 males, mean age 48.4 ± 15.4 years; 217 females, mean age 46.1 ± 15.2 years) were analyzed. The presence of HCs, AMO, ostium narrowing, and ostium obstruction were recorded, along with ostium dimensions. Relationships between these variations and sinus pathologies were statistically evaluated, with a p-value < 0.05 considered significant. Results: HC prevalence was 34.5% on the right and 39.5% on the left, while AMO was present in 39.5% on the right and 34.5% on the left. Bilateral AMO was significantly associated with localized mucosal thickening, and partial opacification was more common in cases with ostium obstruction. Significant relationships were observed between HC presence and ostium narrowing. While HCs and ostium narrowing did not significantly influence maxillary sinus pathologies, sex (right OR = 0.335; left OR = 0.384; p < 0.001) and the AMO (right OR = 1.698, p = 0.018; left OR = 1.713, p = 0.014) were found to have a significant impact. Conclusions: It was concluded that (i) HCs may contribute to ostium narrowing and impaired sinus drainage, thereby increasing the risk of chronic sinusitis; (ii) the presence of a bilateral AMO is strongly associated with localized mucosal thickening; (iii) sex and the presence of an AMO emerge as independent predictors of maxillary sinus pathologies; and (iv) the careful evaluation of these anatomical variations using CBCT can support multidisciplinary treatment planning in both dental and ENT practice, enhance surgical safety, and help minimize postoperative complications. Limited data exist regarding the size and volume of adrenal glands in puppies; therefore, the present research aims to describe volumetric and traditional measurements of adrenal glands in computed tomography (CT) images of 26 dogs under 1 year of age. Using OsiriX®MD v9.0.1, the adrenal volume as well as adrenal length, and the height and width of the cranial and caudal poles were documented. The results were compared with groups based on age, weight at the time of examination, and the dogs’ adult size when patients were clinically re-evaluated after more than 12 months of age. The mean adrenal gland volumes were 0.50 cm3 for the left (range 0.08–1.29 cm3) and 0.41 cm3 for the right (range 0.03–1.10 cm3) adrenal gland. The results showed that older puppies had larger adrenal glands, although the difference did not reach statistical significance. The volume of the adrenal glands correlated positively with body weight and the patients’ adult size. The findings highlight the diagnostic potential of CT-based adrenal volumetry and two-dimensional measurements and support their use in refining reference values for young dogs. The strong correlation between adrenal size and body weight emphasizes the importance of weight-adjusted interpretation in clinical settings. Full article

This paper reports a novel effort to estimate and evaluate the coefficients of Hg transfer across the water/air interface in lakes such as Cane Creek Lake (CCL, Cookeville, TN, USA). This was accomplished by calculating the coefficients (kw) using the Two-Thin Film (TTF) Model for Hg transfer together with the field-measured data of Hg emission flux (F), dissolved gaseous mercury concentration (DGM), air Hg concentration (Ca), and water temperature for Henry’s coefficient (KH) obtained from a separate field study at the CCL. The daily mean kw values range from 0.045 to 0.21 m h−1, with the min. at 0.0025–0.14 and the max. at 0.079–0.41 m h−1, generally higher for the summer, and from 0.0092 to 0.15, with the min. at 0.0032–0.033 and the max. at 0.017–0.31 m h−1, generally lower for the fall and winter, exhibiting an apparent seasonal trend. The highest kw values occur in August (mean: 0.21, max.: 0.41 m h−1). Our kw results add to and enrich the aquatic interfacial Hg transfer coefficient database and provide an alternative avenue to evaluate and select the coefficients for the TTF Model’s application. The kw results are of value in gaining insights into the Hg transfer actually occurring across the water/air interface under environmental influences (e.g., wind/wave, solar radiation). Our kw results do not show a clear, consistent correlation of kw with wind/wave effect, nor sunlight effect, in spite of some correlations in sporadic cases. Generally, the kw values do not exbibit the trends prescribed by the model sensitivity study. The comparisons of our kw results with those obtained using wind-based transfer models (the Liss/Merlivat Model, the Wanninkhof Model, and the modified linear model) show that they depart from each other. The findings of this study indicate that the TTF Model has limitations and weaknesses. One major assumption of the TTF Model is the equilibrium of the Hg distribution between the air and water films across the water/air interface. The predominant oversaturation of DGM shown by our DGM data evidently challenges this assumption. This study suggests that aquatic interfacial Hg transfer is considerably more complicated, involving a group of factors, more than just wind and wave. Full article

(1) Background: Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is one of the two gold-standard tools for assessing oropharyngeal dysphagia (alongside Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study). Although generally considered safe, concerns about complications persist, particularly in systems where FEES is not routine and professional roles differ. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of FEES performed by both speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and physicians, in order to provide evidence of its safety in a healthcare system where the procedure is not yet widely established and to identify patient subgroups potentially at higher risk of procedure-related complications. (2) Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 964 consecutive FEES procedures. Examinations were carried out by trained SLPs or physicians. Data included demographics, clinical status, operator qualifications, setting, and complications, classified as minor (vomiting, poor tolerance, early termination) or major (laryngospasm, epistaxis). (3) Results: The overall complication rate was 1.14% (11/964): 0.6% minor and 0.5% major. All events were self-limiting. Complication rates did not differ between SLPs (1.05%) and physicians (1.23%) or by experience, setting, drug use, penetration–aspiration scale score, or nasogastric tube. Four complications occurred in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients, suggesting higher risk. (4) Conclusions: FEES is safe and well tolerated when performed by either physicians or SLPs. These findings underscore the value of task sharing in dysphagia diagnostics, demonstrating that a shared model increases service capacity, reduces delays, and facilitates timely management of dysphagia. Consumers increasingly seek clean-label meat products with improved nutrition and stability. We evaluated a collagen hydrolysate–cranberry mixture (CH-CR) as a functional additive in cooked sausages. Two formulations—control and CH-CR—were assessed for fatty acid profile; lipid and protein oxidation during storage; antioxidant capacity ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, and half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50); amino acid composition; and instrumental color. Relative to the control, CH-CR produced a more favorable lipid profile: lower saturated fatty acids (SFAs) 23.9% vs. 28.0%, higher monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) 53.2% vs. 49.3%, slightly higher polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) 23.3% vs. 22.7%, a higher PUFA/SFA ratio of 0.97 vs. 0.81, and a lower omega-6/omega-3 (n-6/n-3) ratio of 13.5 vs. 27.1, driven by higher alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) 1.6% vs. 0.8%, with trans fats <0.1%. Storage studies showed attenuated oxidation in CH-CR: lower peroxide value (PV) at day 10 8.1 ± 0.4 vs. 9.8 ± 0.5 meq/kg and lower thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) at day 6 0.042 ± 0.004 vs. 0.055 ± 0.006 mg MDA/kg and day 10 0.156 ± 0.016 vs. 0.590 ± 0.041 mg MDA/kg); the acid value at day 10 was similar. Antioxidant capacity increased with CH-CR FRAP 30.5 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g vs. not detected; DPPH inhibition was 29.88% vs. 10.23%; IC50 56.22 vs. 149.51 µg/mL. The amino acid profile reflected collagen incorporation—higher glycine+proline+hydroxyproline 2.37 vs. 1.38 g/100 g and a modest rise in indispensable amino acids (IAAs) 5.72 vs. 5.42 g/100 g, increasing the IAA/total amino acid (TAA) ratio to 0.411 vs. 0.380. CH-CR samples were lighter and retained redness better under light, with comparable overall color stability. Overall, CH-CR is a natural strategy to improve fatty acid quality and oxidative/color stability in sausages. Full article

Multi-principal element nitrides have great application potential in protective coatings. However, the investigation of the oxidation and corrosion resistance of multi-principal element nitride coatings is still insufficient. The synthesis and high-temperature performance of AlCrNbSiTiN multi-principal element nitride coatings fabricated through optimized arc ion plating (AIP) were explored. Leveraging the high ionization efficiency and ion kinetic energy characteristic of AIP, coatings with significantly fewer internal defects were obtained. These coatings demonstrate superior mechanical properties, including a maximum hardness of 36.5 GPa and critical crack propagation resistance (CPR) values approaching 2000 N2. Optimal coatings exhibited exceptional water vapor corrosion resistance (5.15 at% O after 200 h). The coatings prepared at −150 V had the optimal corrosion resistance, with the coating resistance and corrosion current density being 1.68 × 104 Ω·cm2 and 0.79 μA·cm−2, respectively. AlCrNbSiTiN coatings produced under these optimized AIP conditions exhibit remarkably high-temperature oxidation, highlighting their potential for use in demanding engineering applications. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are critical indicators of the metabolic status of whole-plant maize silage (WPMS). However, the impact of inoculating various strains of fermentation agents on VOC changes has not been systematically explored. This study aimed to determine how inoculation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lentilactobacillus buchneri modulates the VOC profile and odor of WPMS after 90 days. VOCs were extracted by headspace solid-phase microextraction and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). Key VOCs were screened using the variable importance in projection (VIP) and substantiated by relative odor activity values (rOAV) and odor descriptions. A total of 82 compounds were identified, including 22 esters, 19 alcohols, 3 acids, 9 aldehydes, 2 ethers, 6 hydrocarbons, 4 ketones, 10 phenols, and 8 terpenoids. L. plantarum enhanced green/fruity odors while strain L. buchneri significantly reduced undesirable phenolic and aldehydic compounds. Six key VOCs influencing the odor of WPMS were selected: 4-ethyl-2-methoxyphenol and benzaldehyde, which contribute smoky, bacon, and bitter almond aromas, and (E)-3-hexen-1-ol, benzyl alcohol, (E, E)-2,4-heptadienal and methyl salicylate, which impart green, fruity, and nutty aromas. These findings highlight the effects and contributions of various strain additives on VOCs in WPMS, providing new theoretical insights for regulating the flavor profile of WPMS. Full article
