The research analysed the space-use and habitat-preference characteristics of red deer (Cervus elaphus) in the Sopron Mountains, Hungary, utilising high-resolution Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry data and two distinct land-cover databases. Hourly location data from 10 individuals were processed using the minimum convex polygon (MCP) and kernel home range (KHR) methods. Additionally, a relative stability index (RSI) was developed to describe seasonal shifts in area use. Significant sexual dimorphism was identified in the extent of annual home ranges: the mean space use of stags (3381 ha) significantly exceeded that of hinds (1391 ha). Geomatical analyses highlighted the seasonality of space use: the smallest extent was recorded in June, and shifts in home ranges within a single year were significant, while the winter period exhibited the least seasonal variation. Regarding habitat selection, significant seasonality was observed in hinds, reflecting temporal changes in resource availability, whereas this pattern was not observed in stags. The study concluded that the applied methods are appropriate for gathering baseline information; however, integrating high-precision databases is essential for accurate modelling of deer–forest interactions. Animal infectious diseases impose severe economic burdens on livestock industries, threaten wildlife populations, and compromise food security. Although vaccination remains the cornerstone of disease prevention, conventional vaccine platforms are often constrained by safety, efficacy, or manufacturing scalability. This narrative review provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of the art in herpesvirus-vectored vaccines for veterinary applications, focusing on five well-characterized alphaherpesviruses: Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1), Pseudorabies virus (PRV), Marek’s disease virus (MDV), Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1), and Duck enteritis virus (DEV). The intrinsic characteristics of herpesviruses, including large, stable genomes; the capacity for foreign gene insertion; broad host tropism; and the ability to elicit robust humoral and cellular immunity, are examined, and their performance is compared with that of traditional vaccine platforms. Key advances in vectored vaccine development are highlighted, from proof-of-concept studies to the creation of advanced multivalent constructs. These approaches demonstrate protective efficacy against a range of significant animal pathogens, including foot-and-mouth disease virus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, avian influenza virus, infectious bursal disease virus, and West Nile virus. The literature was identified through systematic searches of PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science (1990–2026), followed by title/abstract screening and reference chaining. Future directions in vector engineering, mucosal delivery, and synthetic biology approaches are considered. Herpesvirus-vectored vaccines represent a versatile platform for enhancing animal health, supporting sustainable agriculture, and mitigating zoonotic risks. Full article

Located on the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute Nations, Colorado State University’s Mountain Campus hosted the 25th Annual Rocky Mountain Virology Association meeting. The three-day event, held from 26 September to 28 September 2025, welcomed 152 participants focused on the following topics: viruses, prions, immunology, transmission, structural biology, and vector biology. This year’s Randall Jay Cohrs Keynote Presentation summarized ongoing research on viral glycoproteins in relation to viral entry and assembly. Understanding the role of viral glycoproteins is essential in vaccine and antiviral development for enveloped RNA viruses. Alongside rigorous scientific discourse and networking, attendees made the most of their time by hiking amidst beautiful fall colors, wildlife, and young aspens starting the forest anew. On behalf of the Rocky Mountain Virology Association, this report summarizes select presentations from the 25th annual meeting. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a silently escalating global crisis, presenting a specific challenge for the One Health approach. Landscapes can serve as reservoirs of AMR bacteria and genes, while synurban wildlife may act as vectors of bidirectional exchange. However, these species can also be utilised as sentinels of landscape AMR load. Herbivorous avian bioindicators, such as the Common Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus), continuously sample the landscape during foraging and drinking, providing a homogenous spatial overview on the state of AMR. This study aimed to investigate the potential of this species for assessing the impact of landscape diversity on bacterial communities and their AMR patterns. Toward this objective, two spatial units of 4 km in diameter located at an upstream and a downstream section of a river, relative to a provincial town, were compared using 16 cloacal samples per site. Heterotrophic plate count techniques resulted in 60 isolates, of which 48 were identified, and 35 were tested for AMR using the VITEK 2 Compact system. The association between bacteriological findings and landscape diversity was analysed using Rényi diversity profiles. The Gram-positive/Gram-negative ratio was the only parameter that proved to be significantly different between the two study sites. The investigation detected six MDR isolates, with two methicillin-resistant phenotypes (Staphylococcus gallinarum, Mammaliicoccus lentus) and two carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas fluorescens isolates. We established that the small sample size limits drawing definitive conclusions. However, exploring the link between landscape diversity and the cultivable faecal microbiota of herbivorous birds is a promising approach for more extensive research. Full article

Illegal logging is a major driver of tropical deforestation, accounting for the majority of timber harvested in many tropical countries and degrading many protected areas, due to both weak law enforcement capacity and corruption. Commercial logging is illegal in Peru’s Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve, a state protected area, but clandestine logging operations persist and affect its biodiversity, including the endemic bird species associated with its rare Amazonian white-sand forests. We examined the effects of illegal logging operations on white-sand forest understory bird communities as sentinels of biodiversity. We sampled birds with mist nets at 12 study sites in unlogged forest and forest regenerating between 1 and 10 years after timber harvest, capturing and releasing 348 birds representing 54 species in 16 families. Forest structure differed significantly between forest treatments, with canopy cover in logged forest significantly lower than in unlogged forest. All avian foraging guilds tested (including ant followers, other insectivores, frugivores, granivores, and nectarivores) responded significantly to changes in one or more forest structure characteristics we measured. The abundance of ant followers and other insectivores was positively correlated with canopy cover, while granivore abundance was positively correlated with subcanopy cover, and both frugivore and nectarivore abundance was negatively correlated with the numbers of trees in white-forest stands. We also took a rare opportunity to compare avian foraging guilds and relative abundance using capture data collected at the same white-sand forest sites in both 2005 and 2023. Over this 18-year period, the total number of understory birds and ant followers in particular declined, whereas other insectivores increased with time since logging. Our results demonstrate that logging has significant influences on white-sand forest habitat structure and bird community dynamics for decades after logging events. Illegal logging threatens forests and wildlife in many tropical protected areas, and we recommend their managers prioritize both preventing illegal logging and mitigating its negative effects to effectively conserve biodiversity. The State of Alaska, USA, has a long and controversial history of controlling predators to enhance ungulate populations, including moose (Alces alces). Moose management is complicated by a dual system in which the Federal and State governments prioritize harvesting moose for human consumption over other considerations, such as trophy or sport hunting, but have conflicting regulations regarding who is eligible to harvest moose. Wildlife management for the State is overseen by the Alaska Board of Game (BOG), with advice from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG). In accordance with its Intensive Management Policy, the BOG establishes regulations promoting the harvest of moose and other ungulates for human consumption. This typically occurs by controlling bears (Ursus americanus and U. arctos) and gray wolves (Canis lupus) in anticipation of increasing ungulate harvests, often without adequate information on the status and ecology of predator or ungulate populations. We provide a narrative and integrative review of moose population dynamics to help resolve those issues. We argue that the current management of moose and their predators in Alaska does not encompass a full range of management options and fails to consider or implement important aspects of their population dynamics. Predators maintain some moose populations at a low density, reducing the harvest of moose but promoting large-antlered individuals, which are of value to Alaska’s professional guide and tourism industries. Using modern models of population dynamics of moose and other ungulates, we argue that if the proximity of the moose population to K (the ecological carrying capacity) is known, management strategies that increase the human harvest of moose and also promote large-antlered trophies are not mutually exclusive. We list life history and population characteristics to help determine the nutritional status of moose populations in relation to K, thereby guiding wise management of that valuable resource. We also recommend an adaptive management approach to assessing the effects of such activities. We caution, however, that to wisely manage these important wildlife resources, more information on the dynamics of moose and their predators is necessary. A system that embraces more biology and fewer politics would provide greater opportunities to employ the best science in the management of moose and their predators. Full article

Understanding interactions among sympatric mesocarnivore populations is essential for making sound management decisions. The golden jackal has rapidly expanded in Europe, raising questions about its potential intraguild effects. Using long-term hunting bag data (1997–2024) from Hungary, we investigated spatiotemporal population trends of the European badger, red fox, and golden jackal. We examined pairwise associations in their annual growth rates. Generalised additive models and Pearson correlation analyses revealed strong species-specific temporal and spatial trends and weak to moderate positive relationships among the species’ population growth rates at the national scale and within regions of high jackal population density. We found no evidence of jackal suppression of foxes or badgers. Additionally, badgers showed the strongest positive association with fox populations. Our large-scale analyses suggest that these mesocarnivores coexist without substantial competitive interference, likely due to local spatial heterogeneity and fine-scale temporal partitioning that are not detectable in annual, broad-scale (national) data. These findings highlight the importance of integrating broad-scale population data with finer-scale behavioural studies to better understand coexistence mechanisms in expanding mesocarnivore assemblages. In this study, we investigated the bioaccumulation of 17 heavy metals—titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, selenium, molybdenum, antimony, cadmium, tin, mercury, and lead—in the liver and kidney tissues of the least weasel, based on samples (n = 129) collected from adjacent intensive agricultural environments in Hungary and Austria. To explore the structure of the bioaccumulation data, principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. The PCA score plot based on national-level elemental profiles revealed no differentiation between Austria and Hungary. In contrast, a clear and unambiguous distinction was observed between the two examined tissues within individuals for Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Se, Mo, Cd, and Hg (p < 0.001), as well as for Pb (p < 0.05). The biological relevance of the accumulation results was adjusted using the MCID approach. As heavy metal accumulation in the least weasel has not yet been investigated, our results could only be compared with concentrations reported for predatory mammals occurring in similar habitats. Based on the relevant literature, we highlight predominantly anthropogenic exposure pathways affecting agroecosystems—organic and mineral fertilizers, plant protection products, wastewater, and fossil fuels—which underscore the necessity of regular biomonitoring studies in agricultural landscapes. The increasing population of mesopredators in Central Europe necessitates precise monitoring for effective game management. This study aimed to estimate the minimum population and reproduction of the European badger (Meles meles), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), and golden jackal (Canis aureus) in two hunting grounds in southwestern Hungary (Drávaszentes and Darány). Methods included a total burrow count conducted in early 2025, followed by the deployment of wildlife cameras at inhabited setts to record adults and cubs. Results indicated an inhabited burrow density of 1.05/100 ha for badgers and 0.38/100 ha for foxes in Drávaszentes, with average litter sizes of 1.13 and 2.33 cubs, respectively. In Darány, badger density was 1.43/100 ha, while jackals were present at 0.2/100 ha. Additionally, habitat composition preference was analysed using QGIS by comparing Corine Land Cover categories within 400 m buffers around burrows against random points. Habitat analysis suggested local preferences for non-irrigated arable land and mixed forests. These findings provide essential baseline data on predator population dynamics to support conscious management decisions. Full article

We analysed data collected at the Innsbruck Alpenzoo (Tyrol, Austria) over 33 years (1988–2020). We examined data from 4542 wild birds of 137 species that were rescued in the increasingly urbanised and densely populated Inn Valley around Innsbruck and examined the outcome of hospital treatment (survival or death); for a subgroup of 3440 birds, we examined the length of stay at the zoo. The birds were divided into nine different groups, and the reasons for admission were divided into nine categories to analyse how the reasons for admission and membership of a bird group influences rehabilitation success and the duration of care required. Orphaned birds, birds that had become entangled in man-made structures, and birds with unknown reasons for admission had the best survival rates (60%), while birds with physical injuries, victims of collisions, and attacks by cats had the lowest survival rates (37%). Survival rates were highest among areal insectivores (66%) and waterbirds (62%), and lowest among small songbirds (45%) and woodpeckers (<39%), which suffered disproportionately from the consequences of window collisions. The overall survival rate of hospitalised birds (51%) was higher, and the duration of care required (median 11 days) was especially shorter at Innsbruck Alpenzoo than at most other rehabilitation centres. We attribute this mainly to the professional care and varied, group-specific diet provided to the patients, which we describe in detail. We also discuss the problems and limitations of wild bird care for zoo staff in addition to their daily tasks. Thereby, it became apparent that the retirement of experienced bird carers at the beginning of the study period and the subsequent steady changeover of staff members had a negative impact on success rates. Despite its global distribution, the impacts of wild pigs on the environment are poorly understood. However, wild boar (Sus scrofa) is recognized as a pest species, causes extensive damage to agriculture, biodiversity, and forests, and contributes to motor vehicle accidents. This study investigates the causes and mechanisms underlying the demographic explosion of wild boar in Italy. The analysis is based exclusively on official datasets from Italian governmental institutes, allowing quantitative correlations between population dynamics, culling rates, and economic impacts. By integrating historical data, population biology, reproductive physiology, and chemical communication, the study reveals that anthropogenic pressures, counterintuitively driven by wildlife management practices, have significantly contributed to population growth. A shift from a K-strategy to an r-strategy in reproductive behavior, induced by sustained control pressure, has led to increased birth rates and accelerated expansion. Disruptions in species homeostasis trigger harmful changes in ecosystem structure and functionality, delineating a model of environmental damage. These findings highlight the urgency of adopting an integrated wildlife management approach that combines conservation biology and physiological principles with targeted operational interventions to prevent further degradation affecting both the species and the ecosystem. In Brazil, the presence of capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in urban environments has raised concerns due to ecological, sanitary and coexistence challenges. This study investigates the growing presence of capybaras on Santa Catarina Island, Brazil, exploring their integration into urban areas. We interviewed 1505 residents of the Island to understand capybara distribution, public perceptions and associated risks. Beliefs about management strategies were also assessed. The findings reveal that capybaras are present in all neighborhoods of Florianópolis, the sole city in the Island. Participants expressed positive views of capybaras, describing them as “beautiful” and “cute” and showing concerns for their well-being in urban environments. Despite these positive perceptions, participants demonstrated limited knowledge about capybara biology (88%) and potential problems, such as disease transmission (37%), traffic accidents (10%), pet conflicts (56%) and garden damage (42%). Most respondents agreed with the statements: “Capybaras are part of nature and should be left undisturbed, even in urban areas” (70%) and “It is important for people to see capybaras in the city, as long as their population is not causing problems” (82%). After risk awareness, more participants rated these issues as highly relevant: disease transmission (97%), destruction of urban gardens (77%), pet incidents (92%) and traffic accidents (98%). This led to greater acceptance of population control, though elimination remained unpopular. Sociodemographic factors influenced opinions. Addressing knowledge gaps can foster ethical, supported management strategies. This case places Florianópolis within a broader South American phenomenon of urban capybara conflicts, highlighting the global challenge of managing human–wildlife interactions in cities. The Eurasian woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) is a migratory game bird of ecological, cultural, and hunting importance in Europe. While globally listed as Least Concern, concerns remain over hunting pressure and limited ecological data. In Hungary, the species occurs regularly during spring and autumn migration and breeds in low numbers. To provide evidence-based management, the Hungarian Woodcock Monitoring Program was launched in 2009. This study evaluates spatial and temporal patterns of woodcock presence in Hungary using standardized roding surveys conducted between 2009 and 2024. Observations were assigned to 10 × 10 km grid cells, with 180 cells consistently sampled over the 16-year period. Detection rates were analyzed, defining “high-abundance” as five or more individuals recorded per session. Interannual dynamics were tested using correlation analyses, and spatial clustering was assessed with spatial autocorrelation. Woodcocks were detected in an average of 94.38% of surveyed cells annually (±3.88% SD), indicating a stable and widespread presence. High-abundance detections were lower (x¯ = 50.56%) and more variable (±10.71% SD) but consistently concentrated in specific areas, highlighting the importance of regional stopover habitats. No significant long-term trend was observed, suggesting population stability. These results confirm Hungary’s key role in the spring migration corridor and underline the value of long-term monitoring for reconciling traditional hunting with conservation objectives. The Reproductive and Anatomical Characteristics of the Invasive Nutria (Myocastor coypus M.) in a Central European Population

The nutria or coypu (Myocastor coypus M.) is endemic to South America. However, this species invaded Central Europe in the 19th century. The rapid spread of the invasive nutria across Central Europe triggered countless ecological conflicts with the local species. In the current research, we surveyed two populations in Slovakia and compared the reproductive performance of this species to its reproductive performance in other countries, where it is native. A total of 69 nutria were harvested from the wild in 2022–2024. The result of the postmortem analysis reveals no intersexual differences in the body weight and length. A visual inspection of the uterus among 25 female specimens confirmed that 16 (64%) were pregnant, including 3 individuals with the body size characteristics of young nutrias. The pregnancy rate was estimated at 90% (9 out of 10) in spring and 47% (7 out of 15) in autumn. The average number of embryos per individual was 6.94 ± 2.22 for all females, and it was 6.27 ± 2.05 in spring and 8.8 ± 1.64 in autumn, with no significant difference between seasons (p > 0.05). No clear relationship between the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the fertility of females, i.e., the number of embryos, was observed. Our results highlight the crucial need to raise public awareness about the invasive characteristics of the species and contribute to the establishment of an effective intervention techniques, including the establishment of the necessary legal framework for eradicating emerging populations across Central European habitats. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been widely utilized in products such as cotton textiles, hydraulic oils, coatings, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. Now it is widely distributed in various environmental media, wildlife, and human bodies. Polystyrene (PS) as a kind of plastics, their products under the physical, chemical, and biological decomposition in the environment are widely distributed in the air, soil, oceans, surface water, and sediments. However, PS and PFOS often coexist in the environment, making the study of their combined exposure mechanisms more aligned with actual conditions. This research integrates network toxicology and molecular biology techniques to predict the toxicity and common differentially expressed gene enrichment pathways of PFOS and PS. This study investigates the toxic effects of combined exposure to PFOS and PS on the mouse growth and development, immune functions, and other aspects. Additionally, it delves into the expression differences in various genes in mice after stimulation by PFOS and PS, the pathological changes in multiple organs, and the toxic effects on organs such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines. The results reveal that combined exposure to PFOS and PS does not significantly damage the kidney but leads to morphological damage in the liver and intestinal tissues, reduced antioxidant capacity, and the occurrence of inflammation. Based on the network toxicology findings, it is hypothesized that during combined exposure to PFOS and PS, the exacerbation of inflammatory responses further mediates the reduction in antioxidant capacity and the intensification of oxidative stress, ultimately resulting in tissue damage. This study provides innovative theoretical and research directions for the detection and prevention of combined exposure to PFOS and PS, offering a new paradigm for toxicological research, with significant theoretical and practical implications.
