Dear Colleagues,
The ocean is vital for human well-being, presenting immense opportunities for economic growth and development. We are rapidly increasing the use of our oceans in traditional and innovative ways. This has already led to degradation of the marine environment and might become irreversible unless firm actions are taken. Many threats exist, including habitat destruction, overexploitation, sewage disposal, the introduction of anthropogenic energy (including sound, light and other electromagnetic fields, heat, and radioactive energy), climate change, etc. It is crucial to manage the ocean well and to make sustainable use of its resources, so that we can reduce environmental pressures in such a way that the ocean´s health and resources are guaranteed for future generations. Performing adequate management of ocean resources and marine ecosystems requires, among other things, using advanced marine sensors providing accurate, reliable, and consistent data.
This Special Issue aims to highlight recent trends and advances in the development of marine sensors for measuring natural marine resources and ecosystems, improving our understanding of the impact of human activities, and attaining the necessary scientific knowledge to define what a good environmental status is and how it can be made compatible with sustainable ocean exploitation. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- smart instrumentation for ecology management (including Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), drones, acoustic monitoring devices, underwater imaging, remote sensing image, etc.)
- emerging marine sensor technology (electro-optical sensors, distributed acoustic sensors, miniature sensors, etc.)
- marine sensors’ big data management and curation
- standardization of performance requirements and testing methodologies
- signal processing for marine sensors’ data (machine learning, including deep learning, big data analytics, etc.)
- multimodal sensor fusion
- energy efficiency and low power in marine sensors
- in situ modelling and real-time observation
- marine sensing applications for environmental protection (decision and policy maker support, control of marine protected areas, etc.)
- bio-logging and marine environment monitoring
- sensor arrays in underwater acoustic applications (including sensor network interaction)

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
