Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The realization of pervasive communication through the Internet of Things (IoT) has fundamentally changed the way we perceive and understand our surroundings as well as interact with the world around us. While evolution in technologies related to embedded devices, computing and sensor networks has made it possible to transform everyday objects into smart devices and form the fundamental fabric of the IoT, it is the advancement in wireless communication technology that has truly made the ubiquitous proliferation of IoT a reality. With the advent of 5G, the IoT has witnessed a substantial enhancement in data transfer speed, connection latency and reliability, security, and energy efficiency. This has propelled an unprecedented pace of IoT’s expansion, creating a new paradigm of interconnected devices, systems and data streams. The ongoing technological evolution beyond 5G will usher a new wave of possibilities for the IoT, with artificial intelligence (AI) set to become an integral part of connectivity, infusing intelligence in every layer of the telecommunication fabric. AI will empower other emerging technologies beyond 5G, such as integrated sensing and communication, integration of wireless information and energy transfer, and digital twins, which will help expand the horizon of IoT connectivity through unparalleled latency, power efficiency and coverage.

Standing on the cusp of the next quantum leap in wireless communication, this Special Issue aims to explore the new frontiers of IoT connectivity, showcasing the latest developments, research findings and innovative insights into how IoT will converge with intelligent communication to reshape the way devices interact and collect data. We solicit original, unpublished and complete research works not currently under review by any other journal/magazine/conference. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

  1. Novel intelligent communication protocols for IoT connectivity;
  2. Edge intelligence and analytics for real-time IoT data processing;
  3. Distributed intelligence across the IoT network fabric for efficiency and resilience;
  4. Harnessing AI-enabled capabilities beyond 5G for diverse IoT applications;
  5. Impact of emerging 6G technologies on intelligent IoT connectivity and services;
  6. Innovative IoT applications powered by intelligent connectivity;
  7. IoT interoperability, cross-platform communication standards and IoT systems scaling with AI-enabled connectivity;
  8. Evolution of security and privacy in IoT with intelligent connectivity;
  9. IoT connectivity powered by generative AI.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. IoT is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
