Aims & Scope
Aims
Aerobiology (ISSN 2813-5075) is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to the science of airborne biological particles, including their interactions with environmental systems and their impacts on human health.
Aerobiology will publish original research articles, reviews, and communications, but other article types will also be considered. There is no restriction on the maximum length of manuscripts. Full experimental details must be provided to ensure the reproducibility of results. Electronic files and software containing full details of calculations or experimental procedures, if unable to be published within the text, should be deposited as supplementary electronic material suitable for reuse.
Scope
Core Topics
- Aeromicrobiology—Outdoor and indoor atmospheric microbiology;
- Aeromycology—Airborne fungal spores, mycelial fragments, mycotoxin-producing species, and airborne pathogenicity;
- Aeropalynology—Pollen taxonomy, dispersal dynamics, allergenicity, and meteorological drivers;
- Aeromicrobiological Pathway—Launching, transport, deposition, and in-transit physicochemical transformation (evaporation, solute concentration, morphology changes, and embedded pathogen function under varying environmental conditions);
- Microbial Survival and Infectivity in the Air—Aerosol aging and decay kinetics; physicochemical and environmental determinants of viability; distinction between genetic material/antigen detection and actual infectious potential; implications for exposure risk and disease transmission;
- Bioaerosols in Environmental Interactions—Sources and emission at environmental interfaces (soil–air, water–air, vegetation–air); meteorological and climatic modulation; ecological roles; exposure risks;
- Bioaerosol Control—Established and emerging technologies (filtration, UV-C, electrostatic precipitation, photocatalysis, non-thermal plasma, ionization); applications in agricultural biosecurity, healthcare facilities, and indoor air quality;
- Microbiological Contamination in Environments—Indoor and outdoor contamination assessment, source tracking, and remediation strategies;
- Aerobiology Applications, Assessment, and Methodology—Active and passive sampling, molecular diagnostics, real-time sensors, AI-enabled analytics; dispersion modeling and forecasting; applications in environmental surveillance, outbreak detection, and smart buildings;
- Public and Human Health—Respiratory and systemic health impacts from bioaerosols; aerosol deposition, retention, and disposition in biological systems; airborne disease transmission dynamics and prevention; host–pathogen interactions following aerogenic exposure;
- Exposure Science and Transmission Dynamics—Measurement, assessment, and modeling of airborne bioaerosol exposure in occupational, environmental, and clinical settings; probabilistic risk assessment accounting for non-uniform distribution of infectious agents across bioaresol populations.
Related Topics (Accepted When Linked to Core Topics)
- Biomonitoring and Biological Sensors—Use of organisms (lichens, mosses, tree barks, Tillandsia spp., etc.) as passive collectors for air quality assessment; active and passive monitoring approaches; indoor and outdoor applications.
MDPI Publication Ethics Statement
MDPI is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
MDPI takes the responsibility to enforce a rigorous peer-review together with strict ethical policies and standards to ensure to add
high quality scientific works to the field of scholarly publication. Unfortunately, cases of plagiarism, data falsification, inappropriate
authorship credit, and the like, do arise. MDPI takes such publishing ethics issues very seriously and our editors are trained to proceed in
such cases with a zero tolerance policy. To verify the originality of content submitted to our journals, we use iThenticate to check submissions against previous publications.
