Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Weeds cause the highest yield reductions among all pests, therefore they receive great attention of the producers. Chemical and mechanical weed control strategies are quite effective but also raise negative side effects such as environmental pollution, health issues, increased soil erosion and high production costs. Cover crops, as a method for biological weed control, have therefore gained in importance. The weed suppressive effects of cover crops, induced by competition and allelopathy, as well as the effects of cover crop mulches can contribute substantially to the reduction of weeds. Moreover, cover crop mixtures have recently become a promising practice in weed control due to their high resilience to environmental changes.

This special issue mainly focuses on original research and review papers that address the impact of cover crops on weeds. This includes investigations into the mechanism of weed suppression (competition, allelopathy) and the effect of cover crops and their mulch on weed abundance and communities. Studies dealing with crop yield after cover crop cultivation, should clearly identify the effects exerted by cover crops and their respective weed suppression potential. Research performed in growth chambers or germination assays are also welcome if the results are verified with field data. Manuscripts evaluating further aspects of weed suppression that can be clearly attributed to influences of cover crops such as weed seed predation, soil seed bank dynamics and cultural weed control are also encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Agronomy is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
