New Challenges and Future Perspectives in the Treatment of Central White Matter Pathologies

Dear Colleagues,

Over the last decade, there has been growing interest and important developments in the identification of effective targets for central white matter pathologies. The progress has been encouraged by enhancements in research methodologies that allow us to collect perspectives from various angles, alongside the imperative to gain a deeper comprehension of the interplay between these various mechanisms. In spite of the collaborative endeavors of the scientific community to comprehend these fundamental pathological processes, the creation of impactful treatments has not yet been achieved. Current treatment models primarily concentrate on relieving symptoms without addressing the fundamental pathology, making them ineffective in the advanced stages of the disease. The realm of white matter neurobiology and its associated ailments is progressively developing to address this gap in scientific knowledge. Driven by advancements in imaging technologies, molecular techniques, and cellular and animal models, investigations into the development, injury, and recovery of white matter has allowed for the dissemination of fresh knowledge regarding the progression of neurodegenerative white matter diseases.

In this Special Issue, we encourage researchers to offer papers summarizing the state of the art and the main challenges in the field of diseases that directly affect the white matter. We also encourage contributions that delve into future prospects and outline developments that this field will experience in the upcoming years. Relevant research areas are as follows:

• What significant breakthroughs have shaped our understanding?
• What challenges demand immediate attention?

The Guest Editors welcome all types of manuscripts published by the journal, which comprise original research articles, methodologies, brief research reports, reviews, and perspectives related to this wide field of neurobiology.
