Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Civil structures, including long-span bridges, tall buildings, stadiums, tunnels, transmission towers, cooling towers, wind power generation structures, etc., are of vital importance for infrastructure and urban development. They possess ultimate values for safe, resilient, and sustainable transportation networks and industrial production. Despite the world-renowned achievements of civil structures in recent years, they have also faced potential safety risks. On the one hand, engineering structures are developing towards greater size and more complexity due to the growing demand for infrastructure around the world. However, some new design concepts and construction techniques lack sufficient engineering practices. On the other hand, structure performance undergoes time-varying changes and exposure to long-term aggressive environments. This is accompanied by a decrease in reliability owing to the combined action of randomness loading, fatigue, creep, shrinkage, and corrosion. As the service period increases, structural performance will continue to deteriorate, and the problems of inadequate safety and functionality will become increasingly apparent. Some major safety hazards or accidents have occurred, such as the abnormal vibration of the Saige Building, the vortex vibration of the Humen Bridge, and the collapse of the Agwani-Sultangi Bridge, which have caused serious adverse social impacts as well as casualties and property losses. With the development of structural size and the degradation of structural performance, the design, construction, and maintenance of civil structures will face different degrees of challenges.

The continuous development of calculation theory, analysis framework, and the numerical modeling technique can provide more reasonable structural parameters and better structural mechanical performance. Meanwhile, structural health monitoring (SHM) is a vital function of large-scale structures. Well-executed SHM could provide warnings for potential failures and could ensure the safety, reliability, and durability of infrastructures. Therefore, technological developments and innovations in the modeling, monitoring, and structural analysis of civil structures present promising advances that could help the research community and designers to overcome the abovementioned challenges.

This Special Issue is dedicated to presenting the latest advances in the modeling, monitoring, and structural analysis of large-scale civil structures; we aim to include all the aspects of design, construction, and performance assessment. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Design theory and construction practices of civil structures;
  • Innovative engineering structures and systems;
  • Risk, reliability, and resilience analysis of civil structures;
  • Health monitoring, warning, and maintenance in the operation stage.

We welcome submissions that deepen our understanding of problems concerning theoretical, modeling, and numerical aspects as well as those that present results from monitoring and experimental tests. The Special Issue will be of interest to academics and structural and construction engineers but also architects and other professionals involved in the civil engineering fields.
