Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As the world population ages, ever larger numbers of people are expected to develop aging-related diseases over the next 50 years, namely neurodegeneration and cancer. Proteomics provides essential information for understanding human pathology due to its unique ability to describe the functional units in cells, i.e., proteins. While the aging process underlies the development of both neurodegeneration and cancer, connections between the two diseases have not been fully explored. Additionally, whether our extensive knowledge of the molecular landscape of cancer could assist in understanding the mechanisms leading to neurodegeneration it is yet to be investigated.

This Special Issue broadly looks to assemble a collection of articles that examine the proteome of neurodegeneration, cancer, and aging. The overarching goal is to start building connections between these traditionally separate disciplines, which may reveal patterns that are shared between these disease processes, and offer fresh perspectives on how aging contributes to either neurodegeneration or cancer. We seek to include a range of inter-disciplinary topics, including the proteome of aging; neurodegeneration and cancer; protein functional annotations in diverse pathological contexts; the use of publicly available data to understand disease; mass spectrometry methods and advances to understand disease; proteomics of post-translational modifications; molecular mechanisms of disease; drug targets; protein degradation; the proteome of body fluids; proteomics and metabolism; big data for human health; multi-omics; and proteogenomics.
