Special Issue Information

Electrospinning has proven to be a feasible approach for the fabrication of ultrafine/nanofibers from a variety of polymers, inorganic compounds, biomaterial blends, and composites with exceptional features including higher surface area, diverse morphology, high aspect ratio, tunable porous nature, interconnectivity, mechanical stability, flexibility, and distinctive benefits in functionalization. Because of their unique remarkable features, electrospun nanofibers have been explored for their potential applications ranging from environmental to biomedicine. Electrospun nanofibers have gained substantial attention for their potential in the detection of various analytes. Acknowledging their easy functionalization features, thus, creates several opportunities to encapsulate a variety of chemo-/bio functional moieties through different approaches, including direct blending, core/shell, and surface functionalization that enhance the selectivity, sensitivity, and response speed of the sensors. To this end, functionalized electrospun nanofibers serve as excellent platforms for numerous analytes including heavy metal ions, nitroaromatic compounds, volatile organic compounds (VOC), pH, toxic gases, and biomolecules by adopting optical and electrochemical sensing strategies and their combinations.

In this context, this Special Issue will be focused on the most recent advances in the design and development of functional electrospun nanofiber-based sensors for the detection of various analytes.
