Impacts of Climate Change on Urban Heat

The rise in surface air temperature is regarded as the most apparent indication of global climate change. The elevation of surface air temperature not only affects the health and comfort of the residents of cities but also causes an increase in mortality rate in humans especially in areas already experiencing either extreme temperature conditions or the urban heat island effect. Since exponential population growth drives high demand for urban space, it is essential to understand the impacts of climate and socioeconomic scenarios on land-use changes, particularly on local urbanization. In this regard, numerous land use models have been developed and applied to assess the urbanization rate and its impact on the urban heat island under different climate change conditions. 

The objective of this Special Issue is to collect original research and critical reviews about scientific and technical information on the recent application of different models and techniques to assess the urbanization rate and severity of the urban heat island effect under climate change. The primary areas of interest of this Special Issue include but are not limited to 1) the role of economic activities, socioeconomic pathways and the role of land-use models in predicting the urbanization rate, 2) assessment of land use and climate changes based on shared socioeconomic pathways on urbanization, 3) the effect of urban geometry, wind speeds, and anthropogenic heat generation on the urban heat island, and 4) the impact of climate-induced elevated temperature on the urban heat island in existing and future urbanized areas.
