Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Green spaces have long been confirmed to be the essential components of urban lands that can provide multiple services for human wellbeing. Many studies aim to understand which measures are impactful in optimizing human wellbeing outcomes in green spaces. However, most existing studies focus on the beneficial characteristics of green spaces. To what extent active human interventions can transform green spaces for enhanced human wellbeing has not been well synthesized. This special issue aims to solicit relevant studies demonstrating the role of landscape planning, design, and governance in enhancing human wellbeing.

To draw inspiration from various disciplines, this Special Issue broadly defines green spaces and human wellbeing. Green spaces can be different parks, forests, natural reserves, agricultural landscapes, etc. Human wellbeing can cover basic materials for living well, physical and mental health, security, and good social relations. The highlighted requirement of this Special Issue is action-based research, which means the included papers should have clear action implications for planning, design, or governance of green spaces. A paper that focuses on one or more of the following topics is welcome to consider our Special Issue:

  • In-depth analytics that can identify existing challenges between green spaces and human wellbeing with clear implications for future actions;
  • Innovative planning, design, and/or governance strategies that can enhance certain aspects of human wellbeing;
  • Solid performance assessment of ongoing planning, design, and/or governance strategies concerning human wellbeing;
  • A thorough review or perspective of varied governance strategies or policies proposed in one or different countries for enhanced human wellbeing.
