Sensors and Sensing Technologies for Seismic Detection and Monitoring

Dear Colleagues,

Seismic monitoring and earthquake detection systems are essential tools for assessing earthquake risk, interpreting geological activity, and facilitating quick and responsive disaster management to mitigate the impact of seismic events on human lives and infrastructures. 

Recent advances in sensing technologies have the potential to improve the performance of seismic monitoring systems. This includes low-cost sensors and advancements in ‘out-of-domain’ sensing technologies, such as optical solutions or systems developed for applications beyond traditional seismic monitoring. Combined with the evolution of data acquisition and transmission systems, data fusion, and advanced sensor data analytics and AI, these technologies are key enablers for networks with heightened sensing and processing capabilities.

This Special Issue focuses on innovative sensors and sensing technologies applied to earthquake detection and monitoring. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Low-cost and very low-cost sensing technologies for seismic monitoring;
• Optical sensing for seismic monitoring;
• Urban monitoring and structural health monitoring networks;
• Innovative data acquisition, fusion and transmission in seismic monitoring networks;
• Machine and deep learning in seismology and seismic data analysis;
• Earthquake early warning systems;
• Mobile crowd sensing for seismic sensing and early warning;
• Cloud and edge computing for seismic sensing and early warning.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
