Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Issue of Sensors examines the role of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the evolution and optimization of smart grids (SGs) and smart building (SBs). We aim to emphasize the importance of both data collection and action initiation in smart grids and buildings.

The Issue's scope extends to the design, implementation, and analysis of WSNs, focusing on the ways in which they enhance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of energy systems and smart buildings. Additionally, recognizing smart buildings as key components of smart grids due to their significant contribution to energy consumption, the journal underscores the necessity of real-time data dissemination and context-aware operations to achieving energy efficiency. In this ecosystem, WSNs are not just useful for but indispensable to immediate responsive control and actions.

We invite contributions covering a range of topics. These include sensor network architectures tailored to energy systems and smart buildings, the application of machine learning and AI for sensor-generated data analytics, and the engineering of data pipelines from sensors’ data, including data ingestion into the cloud. Further, the Issue is open to papers discussing innovative WSN communication protocols and architectures that boost interoperability and facilitate real-time data processing, particularly at the cloud and its edge.

Overall, this Special Issue seeks to present a comprehensive perspective on the ways in which WSNs are shaping the future of smart grids and smart buildings, focusing on both theoretical advancements and practical applications.

Topics (but not limited to):

  • wireless sensor networks (WSNs)
  • wireless mesh networks (WMNs)
  • WSN applications in smart grids (SGs)
  • WSNs for the SGs AMI (advanced metering infrastructure)
  • WSN applications in smart buildings (SBs)
  • cloud and edge computing for WSN applications for SGs & SBs
  • WSNs for context awareness enhancement in smart buildings
  • WSNs data engineering & analytics
  • WSNs real-time data acquisition and processing

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
