Recent Advances in Integrated Energy Systems
This special issue belongs to the section "F5: Artificial Intelligence and Smart Energy".
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Integrated energy systems are playing an increasingly important role in the transition toward a more sustainable, resilient, and intelligent energy future. Their use has expanded significantly in recent years due to the rapid penetration of renewable energy sources, distributed generation, energy storage systems, electrified transportation, and flexible demand-side resources. By enabling the coordinated operation of multiple energy carriers—such as electricity, heating, cooling, gas, and hydrogen—integrated energy systems can improve overall efficiency, enhance reliability, reduce emissions, and support sector coupling across modern energy infrastructures. At the same time, their growing complexity has created new technical challenges in system modeling, monitoring, control, optimization, uncertainty management, interoperability, and cybersecurity.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to the modeling, operation, control, optimization, and intelligent management of integrated energy systems. It seeks high-quality contributions addressing both theoretical developments and practical applications, with particular emphasis on innovative methods that improve flexibility, resilience, efficiency, and sustainability in multi-energy environments.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Multi-energy system modeling and simulation;
- Energy hubs and sector coupling;
- Integrated electricity, heating, cooling, gas, and hydrogen systems;
- Smart grids, microgrids, and multi-microgrid coordination;
- Distributed energy resources and renewable energy integration;
- Demand response and flexibility management;
- Energy storage systems in integrated energy applications;
- Electric vehicle–grid interaction and charging coordination;
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in energy systems;
- Forecasting, predictive control, and data-driven energy management;
- Decentralized, distributed, and cooperative control strategies;
- Optimization methods for planning and operation of integrated energy systems;
- Resilience, reliability, and fault-tolerant operation;
- Cyber–physical security and secure energy management architectures;
- Digital twins and real-time monitoring platforms.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
