Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Modular multilevel converters (MMC) are considered one of the promising topologies in both high-voltage and medium-voltage applications. Therefore, MMC is being studied a lot in industry and academia for the application of STATCOM, HVDC, and MV motor drive. Recently, there has been an active movement to change existing fossil fuel engines to electric propulsion methods to cope with climate change, and it is expected that the application of medium-voltage large-capacity motor driving systems for electric propulsion such as large ships and railroads will be expanded in the future. In addition, in the field of renewable energy, ultra-large-capacity wind turbine power systems are being promoted, and the application of variable-speed control such as large-capacity pumps and blowers to improve energy efficiency is expected to be expanded in the industrial sector. Therefore, it is expected that the application of MMCs in electric propulsion, renewable energy, and industrial fields will be greatly expanded in the near future.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to the theory, design, modelling, application, control, and condition monitoring of all types of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Application of HVDC, FACTS, motor drives, and renewable energies, etc.;
  • Optimal design and selection of components for the selected application;
  • Control, dynamics and performance of MMC in the selected application;
  • Advances in control and modulation techniques;
  • Voltage ripple of sub-module reduction at low-frequency operation;
  • Challenges for the application of MMC;
  • Overview of research trends of MMC;
  • All aspects of theory, design, modeling, and applications related to MMCs.

This paper proposes an algorithm for determining the optimal capacitance by utilizing a mathematical model of a submodule (SM) capacitor in a modular multilevel converter (MMC) specifically for medium voltage motor drives (MVDs). By approximating the voltage fluctuation of the SM capacitor during low-frequency operation, it is feasible to ascertain the minimum capacitance required for the SM capacitor, ensuring that its voltage fluctuations remain within an acceptable limit that is predefined as a specified value. Moreover, the study considered the injection of both a high-frequency common-mode voltage (CMV) and a circulating current to alleviate the SM voltage fluctuation during the acceleration of motor drives. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through verification using time-domain simulation results obtained using the MATLAB/SIMULINK software and real-time simulation results acquired using the OPAL-RT simulator platform.
