Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper presents the conversion of 1-hexene dimers, for which the authors have developed a synthetic method, to primary and tertiary thiols. As stated by the authors, long-chain branched alkanethiols are essential in the field of nanotechnology and nanoscience, and it is significant to present a new synthetic method.

Although the fact that only one type of starting alkene is used is a little unsatisfactory, both Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov adducts can be made, and the method is considered to be a versatile synthetic method. The experimental section is carefully written, and the compound data are sufficient. Therefore, the reviewer judge that the method can be published in molbank as it is without any additional modification.

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript describes a new method for the synthesis of alkyl thiol compounds. The authors follow a sequential path towards optimizing their product yields. The work adds to the growing literature in this field.

Overall the work is well done and proper precautions are noted. The paper should be accepted after a few revisions indicated below.

line 43: heating between 60-80 C

line 54: As an alternative method, ...

line 79: Was the argon passed through a drying tube?

line 96: The authors repeatedly use rounded numbers.  The correct number of significant figures should be reflected in both the mass and mmol.

line 98, 100: The authors should be consistent with time abbreviations. Use h or hours.

line 110: argon at 0 C with...

line 112: same as above.

line 150: stirring at temperatures between 20-80 C.

line 154: Yield 9-77? The best yield should be reported or an explanation should be given.

references: The correct journal abbreviations should be used.

Did the authors submit samples for elemental analysis?
