Title:
Effect of High-temperature Hydrothermal Treatment on Chemical, Mechanical, Physical, and Surface Properties of Moso Bamboo
Author: Li et al.
General
The article describes the changes in chemical, mechanical, physical, and surface properties of moso bamboo under various stages of high temperature hydrothermal treatment. The topic of the article is interesting, and the results could also be useful for industry when using bamboo in various products. In general, the article is nicely and understandably written, with specific shortcomings.
Specific comments
L39-40 “When the temperature and humidity change alternately, bamboo starts to shrink…” – What do you mean with alteration of temperature and humidity? If there is no alteration, and only humidity changes, then there is no shrinkage and swelling??
L42-43 “Poor dimensional stability not only causes distortion and deformation, but also causes cracking, which is a troublesome problem for bamboo products.” -This is true for all lignocellulosic material, not only for bamboo.
L94 Latin name for bamboo is missing.
L122 “The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) method was used”. Describe the method or cite the reference.
L123-124 “measuring three chemical elements in moso bamboo.” – Which elements?
L138-139 The reference for GB/T 15780-1995 standard is missing. Also give a rough description of testing procedure and specimen dimension. Which mechanical properties were tested?
L181-183 The changes between the 120-150°C were significant and not inconsequential, as authors stated.
L252 MOE in which direction? In longitudinal?
In all Figures the captions are not clearly visible.
Figure 5. What is the difference between first and second column? What is the scale?
