Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The work presented for review entitled Morphological Characteristics Analysis of Bamboo Panel Milling Dust Derived from Different Average Chip Thicknesses by Sieving and Image Processing presents a rich characterization of dust from the processing of bamboo panels. The descriptions are comprehensive and the accompanying graphics present further characteristics of the dust accessibly. The results obtained respond to the assumptions about the effect of average chip thickness on the morphology of bamboo dust during milling.

I make no comments on the analyses themselves or the correctness of the results obtained, I only have the following suggestions.

Simplify the title

The title is too long and complicated; it is rich in information, but in terms of language it looks ugly. I propose to shorten and simplify the title, while the eliminated words I propose to add to the keywords. Shortening the title has no negative impact on the search, as modern algorithms handle all metadata well. A long title is mainly relevant when the title already contains information that answers the thesis.

In the introduction, I propose to add a paragraph on the minimum information on the characteristics of wood dust. Dust from different species of wood differs in terms of morphology and harmfulness to humans. The main point is to give a brief overview of the differences between different species of dust, including from bamboo.

In the method, it is useful to provide a diagram or photograph of bamboo panels, especially considering the structure of panel and arrangement of the fibers. This product is little known or not known at all in some areas of the world and its introduction will make the further content easier to understand.

Text in lines 386-398 is written in bold type probably by mistake.

Reviewer 2 Report

The aims and rationale of the study are clearly and succinctly stated.

The methodology is written clearly, concisely, and succinctly, so that it is possible to repeat the research and so that it is possible to achieve the set goals.

I consider the interpretation of the results correct and clear. I believe the results evaluating the effect of selected factors on the observed characteristics should be supplemented.

I believe that the article will bring the desired rating.

I consider the interpretation of the results and conclusions to be correct.

I consider the structure of the manuscript appropriate.

I recommend shortening the Abstract. It should have 200 characters. It should be concise and present only global results. A detailed description of the work results does not belong in the abstract.

Review of the article: Morphological Characteristics Analysis of Bamboo Panel Milling Dust Derived from Different Average Chip Thicknesses by Sieving and Image Processing

The topic of this research and output might be useful for the Forests readers. The authors of the article presented a lot of interesting data.  However the text needs to be corrected.

Abstract

For the reader, an abstract is much more interesting if it includes research data. Please provide the most important dependencies including/giving numbers.

Introduction

Line 33: … beautiful color …

§  Is a relative term. I suggest to use "original color".

Line 83: hemicellulose …

§  Should be “hemicelluloses”. This is a matrix polysaccharides.

Line 87: Personal forms should be avoided. Please write down the sentence in an impersonal form.

Line 92: See comment for line 87.

Materials and Methods

2.1. Materials

§  What was the panels density?

§  Were they glued panels? If so, with what glue?

§  According to which norm/standards were MOR and MOE tested?

§  Why are only the mean values of MOR and MOE given and no standard deviation given? Only one sample was tested?

2.2. Milling methods

Lines 113 - 117: Does this apply directly to the article presented?

Results

Figure 8: Please improve the quality of the Figure 8.

Lines 386 - 398: Please correct the text formatting.

It would be advisable to carry out statistical analyzes, e.g. t-test. It would be valuable, for example, to carry out an analysis of variance and indicate to what extent (giving the so-called Factor Influence) the technological parameters affect the tested dust properties.
