Evaluation of the Community Land Model-Simulated Specific Leaf Area with Observations over China: Impacts on Modeled Gross Primary Productivity
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Dear Editor and Authors,
Zheng et al. investigated the discrepancy between the simulated SLA in CLM and the observed data for 785 plant species in China and the differences in default values SLA in seven terrestrial biosphere models. Furthermore, they evaluated how the variation in SLA values affects GPP modelling for different ecosystems. The authors pointed out problems with using SLA values between the model and observations. They recommended, "using the probability density distribution of the observed trait data within a given PFT, rather than setting trait parameter values based on the mean values." The study is robust because it uses data from a large area with marked differences in vegetation structure and could serve as a reference for other studies in other parts of the world.
Below are some minor issues.
Line 14 – PFT - plant functional types;
Figure 1: Is it Alpine Climate or Apline Climate?
L84-88 - It is essential to mention all searched terms and the period in which the search was carried out;
L217-231 – Please add some information about the interspecific diversity of plants in the environments studied.

It's a well-written manuscript, but the authors sometimes forget to give an explanation in certain tables/figures. For further comments, please refer to the attached pdf with the yellow highlight.
