The article “Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the clinical course and complications of varicella” has been reviewed. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is the etiologic agent of varicella (chicken pox), a highly contagious childhood exanthematic and although varicella is generally a mild self-limiting illness, in immunocompromised subjects and adults it can have a serious clinical course. It is preventable by vaccination with an attenuated vaccine administered around the first year of age, and with a boost vaccination in school age. Displaced populations face disproportionately high risk of communicable disease outbreaks given the strains of travel, health care circumstances in their country of origin, and limited access to health care in receiving countries. This article describes the differences in several traits of hospitalized children in pre and post COVID-19 pandemic periods and intends to provide an overview for future vaccine options to protect against varicella and/or zoster in Poland. Despite the interest it can have for the national public health system, there are many flaws to the way the data is analyzed and presented.
