Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is a well written paper and an important topic. The authors have provided a good summary of general recommendations for this specific nursing care.

Abstract

Line15 – Please rephrase this to say ‘aim’ instead of ‘objective’. Otherwise change

Introduction

Line 75 - Please state if time restrictions are the only barrier to adoption of these or if others exist

Line 84 - Can the authors please provide an explicit statement of the questions being addressed. This was mentioned in the discussion but should be in the introduction

Methods

Line 95 – Please state if the protocol was registered and a given if not

Line 111 – Please change ‘participants’ to ‘population’ for consistency with protocol

Results

Please reformat figure 1

Discussion

Please include what the implications are for designing the type of preoperative nursing interventions needed for this cohort.

Can the authors please provide a rationale why existing preoperative nursing interventions for other surgical procedures are not appropriate for head and neck surgical procedures

Author Response

We are grateful for the time and attention are given to reviewing the article, which helped to improve its final quality. We hope we have answered all your questions.

Abstract

Line15 – Please rephrase this to say ‘aim’ instead of ‘objective’. Otherwise, change

We replaced the word objective in the abstract and in the end of the introduction with the aim

Introduction

Line 75 - Please state if time restrictions are the only barrier to the adoption of these or if others exist

As stated in lines 71-77 the barriers are the urgency of the surgery and psychoemotional preparation.

Line 84 - Can the authors please provide an explicit statement of the questions being addressed? This was mentioned in the discussion but should be in the introduction

The question is in lines 88-89, at the beginning of the method - Which nursing interventions should be implemented in the preoperative period to prepare head and neck cancer patients for surgery?

Methods

Line 95 – Please state if the protocol was registered and a given if not

The protocol was not registered on platforms, it was registered at the nursing school because the protocol is part of a master's project.

Line 111 – Please change ‘participants’ to ‘population’ for consistency with the protocol

 Done.

Results

Please reformat figure 1

 Done.

Discussion

Please include what the implications are for designing the type of preoperative nursing interventions needed for this cohort.

Included 2 paragraphs at the end of the discussion with this (lines 278-289)..

Can the authors please provide a rationale for why existing preoperative nursing interventions for other surgical procedures are not appropriate for head and neck surgical procedures?

The structure and type of intervention can be based on other existing preoperative consultations. What we believe is that the lack of studies on the effectiveness of this type of consultation and the scarce bibliography on the existence of these consultations and the type of interventions justifies further investigation.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear Authors

Thank you for this well written paper. I do like that you do not hesitates to write this paper eaven dough the data collection were limited.

I do however would like you to clarifye and problematize why you chose free acess to the articles as a limitation in your review.

I also want you to discuss the ethical implications in relation to  patient care and society  this limited result means. Could a broder aim has been applyed?

In the discussion section I would have liked if you had drawn some more general conclusions about patients needs of self care after surgery but with this example as a base. You have listed many things that could be implemented in perioperative care in general to enhance the quality of care and specificly for frail patients as the group you are describing.

Thank you

Thank you for this well-written paper. I do like that you do not hesitate to write this paper even though the data collection was limited.

I do however would like you to clarify and problematize why you chose free access to the articles as a limitation in your review.

Because when we performed the search one of the conditions/restrictions was free text available, so it´s possible that there are other articles that we didn’t have access to because we need to purchase them. This is research without funding so we don´t have conditions to pay for some articles.

I also want you to discuss the ethical implications in relation to patient care and society this limited result means. Could a broader aim has been applied?

Limitations of free access as well as limitations in terms of language may have limited the identification of important studies that enriched the results and could allow a higher level of evidence that would allow another type of recommendations for clinical research. Given these limitations, the research was conducted following the good ethical conduct associated with this type of study.

In the discussion section, I would have liked it if you had drawn some more general conclusions about patients' needs for self-care after surgery but with this example as a base. You have listed many things that could be implemented in perioperative care, in general, to enhance the quality of care and specifically for frail patients as the group you are describing.

We introduced a paragraph with this (lines 241-244)

Thank you
