Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This study is about the nitrogen and residue management for GHG mitigation in northeast China. The topic is very interesting. And I have some detailed comments listed below.

1, Need to elaborate more about ‘nearly optimal for crop production’.

2, line 30, ‘Reducing N input by 13% and increasing 29 straw retention by 20% can maintain crop yield and SOC, and also reduce GHGL and GHGI by 13% 30 and 11%, respectively’, need to make it clear if these results based on the model? The abstract should highlight the main conclusion, major tool of this study instead of too much background information.

3, Line 32, ‘incur substantial fossil fuel CO2 emissions’, how much is the substantial fossil fuel? Need to quantify the results in such science paper.

4, Line 34, so here the conclusion is ‘further optimize management strategies to reduce GHG emissions while maintaining crop yield’, this could be a better title for this article instead of the current title.

5, The discussion is needed and could be added to the conclusions section. What is the limitation of this study? What the future step/implementation of this method? What are other literature’s results related to this article?

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper addresses a very important aspect which is the GHG mitigation potential in the agricultural sector. While the paper is well written and structured there are some aspects that need further improvement:

1) The title must be changed.  An alternative is provided below:

GHG mitigation potential in nearly optimal crop production based on Nitrogen and Residue Management: Case study in North East China mono-cropping system.

2) The study lacks literature review. The authors must cite previous similar works and highlight the originality of their proposal.

3) Discussion could also focus on the potential application in other types of crops.
