Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In the paper the issue of farming system resilience (and sustainability) has been undertaken. This is a fairly new area of agricultural research, hence any studies in this field should be appreciated. However, I have some small comments / doubts. The title suggests assessment of "resilience" but it seems that in reality it is rather a study about perception of workshop participants (stakeholders), not about the real resilience of the agricultural system. Thus I have doubts whether we can talk about resilience (and sustainability) research if only opinions of workshop participants were collected. In my opinion it should be underlined.

There is (line 152) information that the workshop involved 21 participants - what was the proportion of farmers, government, industry and others. What was the methodology of constructing this group. The whole article is about their perception, so it's important to describe them in more detail.

In the case of figure 4 in the legend, the first place is "others" - in my opinion "others" should be located in the last position in the legend. If it is possible I would suggest to add information about assignment of specified indicators to specified functions in the figure 4 and 5.

In the lines 309-310 there is information that “the participants described the dynamics (four final indicators) in the last 20-40 years. The question was, were the participants prepared to evaluate such a long period of time?

In line 325 there is information: „the strategies were well implemented” - if I understand well it is rather perception of participans about the implemantation (the process of strategy implementation wasn’t analysed).

Reviewer 2 Report

Title Assessing the resilience and sustainability of a hazelnut farming system in central Italy with a participatory approach   The purpose of this research was to perform a participatory assessment of the sustainability and resilience of Viterbo's hazelnut farming system.   The document is well written and is a relevant contribution in the context of sustainability.   I only have two minor suggestions in case the editor and the authors think it's appropriate.   1- To add the global statistics of this crop in the introduction to highlight the importance of the problem.   2 In the conclusions do not make reference to figures. I believe that they should be written without the need to consulate the figures or the results of the work.   Congratulations on the great job done.
