Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

1) Language usage should be checked.

2) The role of NPP should be better clarified in the article. Specific analysis should be proposed and a refined rationale for this aspect should be implemented

3) This is mainly a local study. What are the implications for other countries? Please improve both positive and normative issues.

4) I would see a wider state of the art review in the introduction.

5) Conclusions should be better connected with the results obtained in your analysis, providing a clear statement about novelty and originality of this contribution.

Author Response

We are grateful to you for the suggestion. We have revised the manuscript carefully according to the comments.

1) Language usage should be checked.

Response: Thanks for your comment. Language usage have been checked in the revised manuscript.

2) The role of NPP should be better clarified in the article. Specific analysis should be proposed and a refined rationale for this aspect should be implemented

Response: Thanks for your comment. In this study, NPP data were used to estimate the annual biomass of wetland plant in order to evaluate raw materials. The role of NPP have been clarified in the revised manuscript. Specific analysis and a refined rarionale for this aspect have been added in the revised manuscript.

3) This is mainly a local study. What are the implications for other countries? Please improve both positive and normative issues.

Response: Thank you for the suggestion. The implication of this study for other countries have been described in two aspects in the revised manuscript: this study provides a picture of ESV of 13 wetland types, which span a latitudinal range from 19.3 N to 47 N in the Northern Hemisphere; it can contribute to the wetlands valuation in coastal zone, especially for countries in the same latitude zone. The constructed valuation framework is an economically and temporally feasible method and is practically applicable to other coastal countries, which could empower international wetland research collaboration in the future.

4) I would see a wider state of the art review in the introduction.

Response: Thank you for the suggestion. The introduction have been revised to give a clearer picture of the study background in the revised manuscript.

5) Conclusions should be better connected with the results obtained in your analysis, providing a clear statement about novelty and originality of this contribution.

Response: Thank you for the suggestion. Based on the results obtained, a statement about novelty and originality of this contribution has been provided in the conclusions.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper Valuation of Wetland Ecosystem Services in National Nature Reserves in China’s Coastal Zones presents potential to contribute to the wetland ecosystem services mapping in coastal zones

- The authors should further describe how they framed the papers in the established ecosystem services categories.

- The results section should contain more precise percentages – as for example section 236-251 should provide more detailed information

- From this point of view the discussion should also contain information on how these results found can contribute to the scientific literature in the field at international level (how this could be empower knowledge at international level - i.e. Empowering impact assessments knowledge and international research collaboration-A bibliometric analysis of Environmental Impact Assessment Review journal), and also some practical advice on how  this valuation framework should be used by the practitioners or other stakeholders involved in the management of the national nature reserves (i.e. A network approach for understanding opportunities and barriers to effective public participation in the management of protected areas)..

- The conclusion section should describe exactly how this study can contribute to the development of wetland ecosystem services mapping in China and as well to policy formulation and conservation planning.

Response: Thanks for your comment. The “Data Description” and “Evaluation Methods” have been revised to give a clear describe of the valuation framework in the revised manuscript.

- The results section should contain more precise percentages – as for example section 236-251 should provide more detailed information

Response: Thank you for the suggestion. Precise percentages have been added in the results section “3.2 ESV of Seven Reserves Categories and 13 Wetland Types” to provide more detail information.

Response: Thank you for the suggestion. Information on contributions to the scientific literature at international level and international research collaboration have been added in the discussion section. Some practical advice has been added in the last paragraph of the discussion section.

- The conclusion section should describe exactly how this study can contribute to the development of wetland ecosystem services mapping in China and as well to policy formulation and conservation planning.

Response: Thanks for your comment. The application of satellite data demonstrate the spatial distribution of wetland ecosystem services, which can contribute to the wetland ecosystem services mapping in coastal zones. The results provide insight into wetland trade-offs and prioritization of wetland types with high service values, which would provide scientific support for resource managers and policy makers in wetland conservation and restoration. The two aspects have been described in the conclusion in the revised manuscript.

Reviewer 3 Report

The manuscript evaluated wetland ecosystem services in national nature reserves along China’s coastal zones, the authors combined physical dimension and monetary measurements to evaluate wetland ecosystem services. They constructed a literature database containing 808 observations (170+ papers) on field-scale research for wetlands in China’s coastal zones. The work is original and important. It deserves publication. However, the presentation of the work needs further improvement. Especially the results and discussion section, which is a mess at the moment. I would suggest the authors use sub-section for results and discussion, which can provide a clear layout of the research. Last but not least, the use of English language needs to be checked by native speaker.
