Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper studies the energy conservation for water front hotels' chillers based on energy benchmarking and environmental reporting. The following aspects need to be modified before making the next decision.

(1) In the model construction part, you need to add the flow chart of the model operation.

(2) The source of the data and the original data should be presented in the article.

(3) The method used in this paper is too simple and can only analyze whether there is a linear relationship between the influencing factors. If the problem studied has more complex nonlinear relationship, the method used can not be solved well.It is recommended to reconsider the choice of model.

(4) Combine Part 6 and Part 5 of the paper.

Reviewer 2 Report

This study attempts to establish the benchmark of electricity usage of 13
hotel chillers and elucidate how the benchmarking results be integrated with the various types reports for monitoring purpose. A survey of 20 hotels was conducted and 13 completed samples were used in the analysis.

The whole work is not only interesting but also very useful.

POINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT:

  1. Please expand the subtropical conditions reported. In particular write a short paragraph explaining in detail the climate conditions
  2. A GOOGLE SCHOLAR review made by the reviewer by using the keywords provided by the authors revealed 8,000 works. Please, kindly complete the keywords.

In my opinion this work could be published after revision.

In this paper authors attempt to present the results of a benchmarking analysis of energy consumption of chillers in water front deluxe Hotels. In my opinion the paper should be significantly improved to be accepted. My suggestions, questions and observations are:

- Nomenclature is missing

- „The electricity consumption of the HVAC system is distributed among three parts, namely, the chiller, which creates cooling water; the fan, which delivers cooling air to designated places; and the pumps, which circulate chilled water.” Reconsider and formulate correctly this sentence please. HVAC means heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Chillers are used in cooling systems only (so, H and V should be avoided).

- In Table 1 is not quite clear whether the authors are presenting only Hotel buildings (Table caption) or hotels and offices (last rows of the Table).

-page 5 lines 179-184: a series of important parameters were taken into account. However, shading and shading devices in my opinion are extremely important in the analysis of chillers power consumption. What the authors opinion is? Please provide some information why the shading (fix or mobile) were not taken into consideration. What was the ratio behind?

- “Prior research indicates that parameters affecting hotel energy consumption can be classified into two dimensions: climatic influence and in-house activities.” What about thermo-physical and architectural parameters of building envelope? In my opinion FGA or AFGA are only one/two of many other parameters which have strong influence on specific energy consumption of chillers.

- “Temp stands for average temperature…” – which temperature? Outdoor dry temperature? Indoor operative temperature?

- “…stands for the chiller’s electricity consumption…” – Which the unit is? Please provide the units for all parameters in SI.

- You have Table 1 on page3 and page 7!!

- “[34]” – (line 351) – why this citation is in red colour?

- “[50]” – (line 357) – why this citation is in red colour?

- line 395: “This The literature review…” - ???

- the questionnaire used in this research have to be presented. Without to see the questionnaire the presented results cannot be interpreted properly.
