Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Thanks for a well performed study. The manuscript is easy to read and includes the contemporary national/local behavior of Slovenes. The study is very small to reach statistical support, and to be published in an international journal a more holistic approach should be taken in the Introduction and in the Discussion. Therefore, it is recommended to consider the following:

  • Raise the view to include the global/European numbers and behavior more, and support the directions and need for action on LCA data. This can be found in for instance:
    1. Global angle: Measuring Fashion by Quantis (https://quantis-intl.com/report/measuring-fashion-report/ )
    2. Climate impact for each step in the value cycle in Sweden and Europe giving that the impact from production is ~70%, see page 23 in: Investor brief Sustainability in textiles and fashion (https://www.mistra.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/mistradialogue_rapport_investor_brief_textiles_final.pdf )
    3. The origin of these numbers comes from: http://mistrafuturefashion.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/G.Sandin-Environmental-assessment-of-Swedish-clothing-consumption.MistraFutureFashionReport-2019.05.pdf
    4. To compare the local behavior of Slovenes, this 4 country study can be used: Joshua Sohn, Kristian S. Nielsen, Morten Birkved, Tina Joanes,Wencke Gwozdz, The environmental impacts of clothing: Evidence from United States and three European countries, Sustainable Production and Consumption (2021), doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.spc.2021.05.013
    5. And to strengthen the discussion and to give direction this can be used: Joanes, T.,Gwozdz, W. & Klöckner, C. (2020). Reducing personal clothing consumption: A cross-cultural validation of the Comprehensive Action Determination Model. Journal of Environmental Psychology, 71, 1-10. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jenvp.2020.101396
  • To me it is not clear if the respondents are in Ljubljana, or in Slovenia in general.
  • Some more editorial comments:
    1. Personally, I don’t get the expression in the title “No, I don´t give these pants”, please consider rephrasing.
    2. All the figures and tables should be referred to within the text as “(see Figure X)”, etc.
    3. Row 31: please clarify if waste here is in general or only textile waste, and also if it is global.
    4. Row 49: exchange “use” by “consumption”?
    5. Row 82: exchange “clothes” by “times”?
    6. Row 84: please consider rephrasing sentence to “…at a rate of…”?
    7. Row 87: add other countries´ mindset to compare with the Slovenian. See recommended literature above.
    8. Row 101-110: include the LCA perspective. See literature above
    9. Row 135 and below: refer to the right Figures within the text.
    10. Row 158: Figure 3 is a Table. Refer to it as Table 1 and link to this also in the text.
    11. Row 167: Please consider rephrasing sentence. I do not get this sentence.
    12. Row 183-187: Numbers does not match Figure 5. I don´t see why Humana, Red Cross and Caritas should not be grouped all together instead of only grouping red cross and Caritas? Couldn’t the 3 of them be grouped as “donated to non-profit organizations”, or similar?
    13. Row 185: Exchange “Human” with “Humana”.
    14. Row 190, i.e. Figure 5: the description linked to the dark green field does not make sense to me, consider rephrasing “ I recycle tem or otherwise downcycle them at home”?
    15. Row 191: suggesting rephrase to “Most common faith of clothing when disgarded”
    16. Row 200: consider rephrasing sentence.
    17. Row 204: consider rephrasing sentence.
    18. Row 272: remove “lot”?
    19. Row 298: “tradition” instead of “Tradicion”?
    20. Row 309: circular instead of circural
    21. Row 354: Closed instead of Cosed.

Answer: You will see we added these literature and researches to the article in text.

To me it is not clear if the respondents are in Ljubljana, or in Slovenia in general.

Answer: The online survey lasted for four months and was intended for the inhabitants of the whole of Slovenia, whereby we also separated the respondents according to which municipality they come from. In this study, we present an analysis of the habits of the inhabitants of the City of Ljubljana.

Some more editorial comments:

Personally, I don’t get the expression in the title “No, I don´t give these pants”, please consider rephrasing.

We rephrase it: see text.

We corrected the Figure and numbers, Humana is not the charity organization, Humana sell textile further in a second hand stores and to companies.

Row 185: Exchange “Human” with “Humana”.

Done.

Row 190, i.e. Figure 5: the description linked to the dark green field does not make sense to me, consider rephrasing “ I recycle tem or otherwise downcycle them at home”?

Done: Recycle or otherwise process them at home.

Reviewer 2 Report

Introduction:

The introduction is well conducted. It addresses the issue and refers to relevant literature. However, please emphasize on works recently done (not older than 5 years ).

Materials and methods:

This chapter is well conducted.

Figure 2 should be improved, “university”

Figure 3- it should be “Table 1”? How do you calculate the average and the std. deviation? What does it mean?

Discussion; Conclusions:

The discussion should be completed. Please add more works. The conclusion is well conducted.

Figure 3- it should be “Table 1”? How do you calculate the average and the std. deviation? What does it mean?

Average is artimetic mean it is the sum of all measurements divided by the number of all measurements in the data set. In our case there were Likert scale responds from 1 to 5, with 1 meaning “I am not aware at all” and 5 “I am very aware”. And standard deviation is statistical indicator most commonly used to measure the statistical dispersion of units. It can be used to measure how dispersed the values contained in a population are. The standard deviation is defined as the square root of the variance, thus achieving a positive pointer value in each case. We calculate it in SPSS program.

 Discussion; Conclusions:

The discussion should be completed. Please add more works. The conclusion is well conducted.

Done.

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper reports a topic of interest, that of the end of life of garments already addressed in several papers even if it relates to the Slovenian geographical area, Ljubljana in particular.
In my opinion it should be supported more by a bibliography of greater depth.
I have strong doubts about the online survey as I wonder if the number of responses is significant from a statistical point of view.
The answers seem to me to come from a fairly homogeneous sample with people with high educational qualifications.
It would be important to better specify where and how this survey was launched and also to highlight its limitations.
The structure and presentation of the research is not very original and sometimes the phrases are almost obvious.
I suggest to the authors to aim at improving the underdeveloped and certainly interesting aspects such as the motivations and behaviors of Slovenian citizens, the economic aspects, the assessments relating to recovery and recycling, etc.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

Thanks for the updated material.

Editorial comments:

Row 204: x (with line) is not described.

Row 237: the total number in the Figure is above 100%. Please change formate of the figure or correct to match 100% in the whole circle.

Row 278: I believe that the discussion is lacking the direction of increase reuse to avoid waste. By enabling attractive business models for reuse, the garment can reach extended life time, which would be the easiest environmental earning.

Author Response

I have corrected all the issues. In the attachment you will find the corrected version.
