Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

I find the paper submitted for review interesting and generally well written. I have some remarks that may be considered by the authors.

  1. In the paragraph “Research sample” the authors discuss a survey that was conducted among fishers. The questionnaire should be attached to the article.
  2. Some titles of figures and tables are too general, i.e “Figure 1. Research location ” or “Table 1. Descriptive Statistics ” or “Figure 2. Propensity score ”
  3. Units in tables 2 and 3 are missing. I would suggest convert Nmi to km.
  4. Table 4 is missing.
  5. Figure 2 should be moved to section 4.3
  6. Reference list is hard to read in current form.

Reviewer 2 Report

This is a very interesting paper using interesting methods on a multifaceted and important phenomena. The authors do a great job in providing some context and the importance of assessing the outcomes of interest within this population, but I think there are several areas that could be improved upon:

  1. Structure and Flow  -
    1. The flow of the paper is a bit choppy. Please consider rearranging some components of your introduction into your methods and the current "Climate Adaptation Strategies" into your introduction. Currently these two sections feel a bit redundant.
    2. Integrate Section 3.1 into the Introduction.
    3. There are components of the results section that would be more appropriate in a discussion section. A good test is that results sections should not necessarily cite other literature. If it is more of an interpretation of findings, then put it in the discussion/conclusion.
    4. In the discussion/conclusion section, please discuss the strengths and limitations of your study and the overall gap that this work is filling in the literature. Much of this is integrated throughout the results, but please move those relevant sections to a discussion.
  2. Methodological Considerations -
    1. The authors use the terms survey, interviews, and questionnaire interchangeably. Please use consistent terminology since this can differentiate between quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches.
    2. More detail is needed about the sample, such as: in what language were these interviews conducted; have the FCS and other measures been validated in this type of setting?
    3. Consider making a flow chart discussing the recruitment method and sample - I'm a bit confused how the sample went from 85 to 170.
  3. Presentation of Findings -
    1. For Table 1:
      1. I would recommend reformatting Table 1 and make the description clearer (rather than "dummy variable"),
      2. also for categorical variables (such as dummy variables) present a frequency (%) rather than means since it is not a continuous variable
      3. consider adding ranges in addition to means and standard deviations for continuous or scale variables.
    2. Figure 2 should go in the results section
    3. Expand more on how the differences in FCS denote that there are implications in food security.
  4. Tone and Grammar -
    1. Please be sure to go through this manuscript to ensure it has an academic tone and appropriate grammar. Currently it reads a bit more casual than standard academic writing. I also recommended to the editor that they assist you with assistance/tools/guides to mitigate these issues.

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper investigated the impact of adaptation strategies on fishers’ income and household food security. In this study, small-scale fishers' households, which have about smaller than 5 gross tonnages were assessed. This study addresses a topic of high relevance for research. However, there are some issues that need to be improved prior to publication. I believe this manuscript can be considered for publication in the Sustainability journal after addressing the comments.
