Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors

Very good paper, but maybe you could implement  the next Points:

-The text between  line 98 and 111 has a lot of citattion, quite opposite to the text  from line 112 to 123, where is only one citation or nothing.

-The lines 135-141 are in my oppinion not necesary, becuase the Reader will find the Information later.

-Also the "aim of the papaer" is missing or  not clearly explained.

Kind Regards

Author Response

Very good paper, but maybe you could implement  the next Points:

Response: Thanks you for your positive assessment of the paper.

-The text between  line 98 and 111 has a lot of citation, quite opposite to the text  from line 112 to 123, where is only one citation or nothing.

Response: Following the comment we have added a paragraph (now lines 124-138) where we refer and discuss several additional references. This way we have expanded our literature coverage which is also in response to Referee 2 comments on the same matter.

-The lines 135-141 are in my opinion not necessary, because the Reader will find the Information later.

Response: We followed Referee’s suggestion and removed the paragraph in question.

-Also the "aim of the paper" is missing or  not clearly explained.

Response: We made edits in the introduction of the revised paper where we explicitly refer to the aims of the paper

Reviewer 2 Report

The principal point is about research design:

  1. Introduction...it´s ok, but immediately ....
  2. 2. Materials and methods, I would like to have literature review and more important:  describe questions research.
  3. Statistical approach is ok but it is enough

my comments are: relates more deeply to the research problem, question research with method and your conclusions they will have more strength

Author Response

The principal point is about research design:

  1. Introduction...it´s ok, but immediately ....
  2. 2. Materials and methods, I would like to have literature review and more important:  describe questions research.

Response: Following the Referee’s comments, we have added a paragraph (now lines 125-142) there we provide summary of the main studies from the diverse strands of the literature which we incorporate in our study.

In addition, we also explicitly formulate our research questions at the end of the paragraph.

More generally, regarding a specific literature review section, because we refer to several different strands of the literature and analyse two distinct aspects of the broad issue of food security, we have placed our literature overviews in the different parts of the paper. Specifically, the literature on coping strategies is covered in sections 2.1 and 2.2. The literature on regional disparities in food security is covered in section 2.3.

Finally, our choice of allocating literature sections under the Materials and Methods main section is also influenced by the required/suggested structure of papers in the Sustainability journal.

  1. Statistical approach is ok but it is enough

my comments are: relates more deeply to the research problem, question research with method and your conclusions they will have more strength

Response: Thank you for your overall positive assessment of our empirical/statistical analysis. In the revised version (the Introduction) we have added explicit statement that our analysis unifies a diverse set of approaches with their corresponding empirical analyses. This provides for a multidimensional analysis on the food security problem in Kenya.
