Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

It is a paper that analyses the environmental impact and cost of the 3 tourism-induced CO2, NOx, SOx emissions in China. It is divided into the following sections:

- Introduction, which provides an overview of the tourism sector and its economic importance. It also looks at its impact in terms of the negative externalities it causes, which translates into its influence on climate change. It discusses the issue but there is no bibliographical reference to it. Some quotations should be included. Mention is made of related works but they are not very up to date. It would be important to search for more recent work.

- Materials and methods. It is correct and corresponds with the environmental input-output tables.

- Results Figures 6, 8 and 10 are not well understood. It would be important to put it in another format.

- Discussion.  The discussion is correct

- Conclusions. It should be indicated what lines of research may emerge from this research.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors of the manuscript presented an assessment of the environmental impact and cost of pollution caused by tourism. In the manuscript the authors presented an important point, although the manuscript has some drawbacks.

Main remarks:
1. Introduction - I suggest you refer to sustainable development / tourism.
2. Results - figures not very visible. The manuscript was sent to Sustainability. Only in lines 42 and 448 is there a brief reference to sustainability. It is too little.
3. Perspectives for tourism development - What are the directions for the future? Why is the topic new? What are the research gaps? What's new in this manuscript? I propose to write in conclusions.
4. Conclusions - what about COVID and tourism? The conclusions should write about the current tourism crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Suggested publications:

  • Fermani, A.; Sergi, M.R.; Carrieri, A.; Crespi, I.; Picconi, L.; Saggino, A. Sustainable Tourism and Facilities Preferences: The Sustainable Tourist Stay Scale (STSS) Validation. Sustainability 2020, 12, 9767. https://doi.org/10.3390/su12229767

5. References - the reference list has 49 items, I propose to expand.
