Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear authors,

Thank you for the opportunity to read the research results. In my opinion, some parts of the article should be modified/improved/reduced:

I believe that there is no balance between introduction, methodology (6 pages) and results, discussions, conclusions, which occupy many pages (20 pages).

In the text of the results chapter, I did not identify a paragraph in which I could see whether or not you validated the hypothesis from where you left off.

I suggest that you need to separate the discussion section from the conclusions section.

I suggest to reduce the discussion section, to eliminate some of the details presented there about the depopulated and abandoned areas in Serbia.

I suggest that at the end of the discussions you insert a paragraph in which you explain more clearly what the limitations of the study were.

The conclusions chapter should be improved, to better reflect the results of the study.

Sincerely,

Reviewer 2 Report

First of all, I thank the authors for their contribution. Despite having no experience in this type of analysis, they were able to convey their interest in the subject and explain the methodology behind the study in a clear and simple way. I have read the paper very carefully and find it of excellent quality, underlining only a few typos in the text that I am sure will be amended in the second draft. The originality of the topic is high, this being of current interest. In future analyses, it would be interesting to evaluate the effects of Covid-19 on depopulation (if any).

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear Authors,

The paper's topic looks interesting but after reading the paper it is not ready to be published and due to several reasons as follows: (i) many flaws (incoherence, inconsistency of terms and numbers, organisations/structure of the whole paper) and (ii) most vitally, it lacks a clear theoretical underpinning, and (iii) it is merely descriptive (lack of detailed or more critical findings).

Problem statement is not consistent with the objectives posed. This must be rectified.

Please find attached the pdf for your improvement of the paper.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear authors,

Thank you for your revisions. I think it is well done but in terms of literature review, for the factors leading to land abandonment and effects associated with it please summarise them perhaps in the introduction since this is the not main or key issues to be addressed in this paper. I understand that this is important but to me it is more of providing a background understanding.

Author Response

On behalf of all the authors, I thank you once again for reviewing our manuscript. I hope our revised version will be received favorably.
