Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Based on the field jacked pile penetration test and CPT test, the variation law of pile sinking resistance curve and CPT penetration curve is compared and analyzed. On this basis, using the static equilibrium theory and the bearing foundation capacity limit method of Terzaghi, a method to estimate the pile sinking resistance considering the influence of soil plug is put forward. The research content of this paper is innovative to some extent, and the following problems should be supplemented and improved before the paper is accepted.

(1) It is recommended to describe the field test in detail. Please give the position of jacked pile and the position of CPT. If the two positions are far apart, the comparability is poor.

(2) How to measure the height of soil plug in the field test?

(3) Please add the variation curves of pile sinking resistance and soil plug height with penetration depth in the process of pile driving. The curves can only show their variation rules.

(4) CPT resistance indicates the end or side resistance of the probe in Figure 2. Or the sum of the two? Please explain clearly in the article.

(5) Please add in the paper how to distinguish the three stages of the formation of soil plug? Or what criteria are used to distinguish?

(6) Are the names of (a) and (b) in Figure 6 incorrectly marked? Please ask the writer to check further.

Reviewer 2 Report

In this manuscript, both force equilibrium method and Terzaghi’s method were adopted for the theoretical analysis on the soil plugging effect during the pile setting process. Consequently, a new equation was proposed for the estimation of the height of soil plugging. This research has practical engineering significance and the manuscript is well written.

(1)    In line 27-45: The author cited some previous research achievements in the field of Jacked Piles. However, the author has not comprehensively reviewed the research achievements in this field and some of the latest research achievements are missing. The following literature is recommended:

(2)    In the introduction, What is the innovation of this article?

(3)    Where do the soil parameters in Table 1 come from?

(4)    In section 3, what causes the formation of soil plug in pile?

(5)    In line 210-212: What are the main reasons for the deviation between the estimated resistance curve and the actual measured pile sinking resistance curve? Is there any way to reduce this deviation?

Reviewer 3 Report

The authors have tried their best to convey the research work in as detail as possible. However, there are some suggestions:

1. Please check the sentence formations throughout the manuscript. For example:

Lines 28 - 30: "Li Yunong et al. 28 (2010) based on the actual measured pressure and cone penetration data of jacked piles in soft soil areas in Shanghai[1], they studied the experience of using static cone penetration ratio average penetration resistance to estimate pile sinking resistance."

Lines 63 - 65: "The system connects a pressure transmitter to a static pressure machine and measures an accurate pressure data through the Internet of wareless technology (Figure 1)." I believe it should be wireless technology?

3. Line 201: Please check that there is no Equation (13).

4. If possible the authors should show one example calculation with the proposed equation and attach in the appendix.

5. A more detailed explanation for the derivation of the equation along with some additional references is suggested.
