Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this work, Jiao and coworkers present a framework, ABIDE, targeted towards ultrasonic echo estimation, finding application in non-destructive testing. The proposed scheme enhances the accuracy in estimating parameters, making it robust for applications involving high noise in the measurements. The approach also appears to have enhanced performance compared with conventional alternatives. The methodology appears sounds and the results are well rationalized. I would therefore recommend the manuscript for publication, once the following minor changes are implemented:

  1. Could the authors comment on how the confidence intervals for the estimated parameters, and how it varies as a function of increasing noise, per the scheme presented here? The results would help gauge the robustness of the scheme in context of the estimated parameters.
  2. In addition, could the authors comment on results from normal-probability plots to ensure a normal distribution of residuals?
  3. The authors are encouraged to revise Tables 2-5 to ensure that the numeric values are presented based on the significant digits (4 seems like too many in the context presented herein).
  4. Including a short commentary on potential additional applications where this methodology could be leveraged, including comments on further plausible improvements to the scheme - would greatly benefit the manuscript.
  5. There are a few typos in the manuscript, the authors are encouraged to correct them and address certain grammatical issues.
