Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Editors,  Have a nice day! This paper details different logit models and combines them into a conceptual framework/model of travelers' activity in Budapest city. Generally, this paper is complex, lengthy, and not very well organized. A reader may lose interest in reading such a work. However, This paper can be improved in the following way: -Reduce the length of the paper -- ideally should be within the words limit--read instructions for authors given on sustainability journal website.  -Reduce complexity with clearer aim, objective, and methodology of this paper. The first paragraph of your methodology part should foreshadow everything in the methods part given the fact that this paper provides very lengthy methods.  -organization of the paper is an issue. the paper is not according to the given format.   -disjunct writing- different occasions differ directions of work and writing style is not easy to make sense of the essence of the work on different occasions  I hope these guidelines will help authors to improve their work

Author Response

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your report on my article.

Report of the first Reviewer

According to your report,

I followed your comments to improve the article,

Therefore, I made modified, corrected and updated the article under this procedure:

  1. I made editing and checking of English language for all parts of the article,
  2. reviewed for all text in the article, then I updated it,
  3. I made corrected to describe the content then connected the previous and present theoretical background with my research,
  4. I made modified the research design and methods,
  5. I edited the discussion to the arguments and results,
  6. I represented the results clearly,
  7. I supported the results presented and the conclusions with the literature presented in the references,
  8. I rechecked plagiarism of my article,
  9. I reduced the number of the pages to the article and reduced the text,
  10. I redesigned the figures and tables.
  11. I explained the article aims and models clearly,
  12. I understand my article is lengthy because there are three models and utility functions; therefore, I should explain everything in the article,
  13. I reduced the length of the article (from 40 pages to 34 pages), and I reduced the complexity of the models to be more clearly to researchers,
  14. I reorganized of models and parts of the article,
  15. I formatted the article according to the suitable format to explain the article parts,
  16. I added a paragraph into the methodology part that illustrates everything in the models part.

In this paper, several aims and motivated achieved:

  1. The transportation operations organization by developing the travel behaviour through modelling daily activity chains.
  2. Reduce travel costs and travel time by the optimal activity chain choice by considering the essential parameters which have a high effect on the activity chains.
  3. Analysis of the current travel behaviour regarding the activity chain.
  4. Using a utility model to create a function that includes socio-economic and traveller factors, travel factors, activity factors, factors of location destination to develop the activity chain model to update travellers’ choices.

Interesting in the paper:

  1. Analysis and modelling travel behaviour within daily activity chains by using new structures and the activity chain new typology based on the activity purpose,
  2. Analysis and modelling travel behaviour within daily activity chains by using three logit models: the multinomial logit model, the nested logit model, and a generalized nested logit model based on the utility function to reach the maximum utility of the activity chain choice.
  3. very interesting to use the generalized nested logit model to find the connection and correlation between the activities within the chain, especially the complex chains.
  4. Using the new and widely utility function, which includes a comprehensive range of the factors (24 factors), such as the individual and household parameters, trip parameters, travel parameters and parameters related to the location of the destination.
  5. Appling of the five formal hypotheses is investigated to establish the role of the individual and household characteristics, trip characteristics, location characteristics, and activity purpose of travellers as an impact on travellers' decision regarding the activity chains.
  6. This article is a step in researching the activity chain model, then researching for optimization activity chain of travellers as the second step.

Thank you very much

Best regards

Reviewer 2 Report

The research is aimed at modeling travelers using logit models based on the utility function. The authors define the goal as "to use the logit models based on the utility function for modeling the activity chains of travelers in Budapest city". 73 sources have been studied, which is a prerequisite for an in-depth study of the scientific literature. Five hypotheses have been formulated and tested in the course of the research. The conclusion is in-depth and includes an analysis of the results achieved.

Reviewer 3 Report

The topic is relevant to practitioners as well as mobility science. With growing cities, the battle between modalities is ongoing. The publication provides a good and broad) review of relevant and recent literature.

The article is not very original. Many publications have been written about 'activity-based modeling' in the past years (often more in-depth) and using it. Authors need to define their 'new' contribution to science in their paper. This paper now is more or less a (interesting) practical research paper on travelers in Budapest city. Is this sufficient for the journal?

The article is long; consider reduction of text or using addendum.

Literature references should be based on e.g. APA-standards. Needs to done.
