Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear authors,

The manuscript presented here shows interesting calculations of possibilities to transform waste into useful components for agriculture.

Please, take into account the following suggestions for further improvement of the manuscript.

line 67-68 ==> If the specified studies were not considered you should not cite them.

line 160==> explain what sub-cities are. Maybe it is a division of the case study city or a suburb?

line 169 ==> are you sure is figure 1 to be cited?

It is not clear if the measurements within the study cited as Castro Herrera  et al. has anything to do with the current study. The authors are using the data on composition of waste from Herrera to extrapolate on their own findings. If the study of Herrera was done in the same time period, we can assume that it can be used as cornerstone for the forecasting run in the current study. If this is not the situation, than the title should be changed to something that induce the idea of theoretical modelling, so as not to lead to the idea that real chemical studies were performed.

Good luck with your manuscript.

line 274==>citing an unpublished work is usually done for co-auhors. this looks improper.

line 340==>delete

Reviewer 2 Report

the research paper entitled "Organic waste generation and its valorization potential through composting in Shashemene, Southern Ethiopia" is a well written one and has the quality to be published in the journal, Sustainability. However, in my view, some points must be considered to improve the overall quality of this paper as follows:

Abstract:

  1. Author should not use the word, 'we' or 'I' in the research paper.
  2. A line of research-gap must be there in this part.

Introduction:

  1. Reference no. 1 and 2 are old enough. Author should use the following one: Dey, P., Mahapatra, B.S., Juyal, V.K., Pramanick, B., Negi, M.S., Paul, J. and Singh, S.P. 2021. Flax processing waste – A low-cost, potential biosorbent for treatment of heavy metal, dye and organic matter contaminated industrial wastewater. Industrial Crops and Products 174: 114195. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.indcrop.2021.114195
  2. Introduction part should not include any tables or figures.
  3. Authors are advised to add the following references:
    1. Praharaj, S., Maitra, S., Hossain, A., Sagar, L., Yadav, A.N., Das, U., Shankar, T., Pramanick, B. and Gaikwad, D. 2022. Bioleaching Approach for Enhancing Sewage Sludge Dewaterability. In: Rajput V.D., Yadav A.N., Jatav H.S., Singh S.K., Minkina T. (eds) Sustainable Management and Utilization of Sewage Sludge. Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-85226-9_3
Sagar, L., Maitra, S., Hossain, A., Yadav, A.N., Singh, S., Kumar, D., Praharaj, S., Shankar, T. and Pramanick, B. 2022. Emerging Nutrient Recovery Technologies in Sewage Sludge Management. In: Rajput V.D., Yadav A.N., Jatav H.S., Singh S.K., Minkina T. (eds) Sustainable Management and Utilization of Sewage Sludge. Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-85226-9_6
  4. This part must include the research-gap clearly as well as the novelty statement.

Methodology:

  1. Socio-economic survey part must be improved with mentioning the exact procedure used by the authors.
  2. In the statistical analysis part, authors should include an ANOVA table. It will make the future reader more clear about the analysis.

Results and discussion:

  1. This part is well written. I don't have much comments in this section. Only concern is that the author should elaborate the discussion part of 'Organic waste generation by hotels, restaurants and juice bars'.

Conclusion:

  1. In this part, author must include a recommendation.
