Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

sustainability-2257759

This article reports the results of Investigating Optical Wireless Power Transfer for Implanted and Wearable Devices. The presented results are good and well-managed and citing the proper literature. However, some points need further improvements, and additional data should be supplied to improve the quality of the manuscript. Therefore, I recommend that this paper should be considered for publication after following major revision.

1.       In the introduction part, the logicality is not very explicit, and there are some English grammatical errors; please double-check and correct them.

2.       Authors are encouraged to cite some relevant and recent literature and improve the concept of the paper and highlight the novelty of the current work, such as.: IEEE Access 7 (2019): 74238-74247., International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems 144 (2023): 108566. IEEE Access 7 (2019): 25535-25546. In order to strengthen their ideas in the light of previous work.

3.       It would be appreciated if the authors could draw a table for a better comparison in the main text.

4.       The resolution of Fig. 2 and 4 should be enhanced.

5.       The optimization and efficiency of the different kinds of species should be discussed in more detail.

6.       All equations should be checked and modified in math-type software.

7.       Add graphic diagram which shows the main theme of the review article.

Review Report: Sustainability-2257759

The manuscript, #Sustainability-2257759, entitled “Optical Wireless Power Transfer for Implanted and Wearable Devices” written by Dinh Hoa Nguyen, studied the optical wireless power transfer (OWPT), an emerging approach of wireless power supply for wearable devices. For OWPT system, LED arrays and solar cells are employed as the optical transmitters and receivers. This study has paid the attention to the scientific community and has the worth of publication in Sustainability. This manuscript should be accepted in “Sustainability” after clarify few queries as mentioned below.

1.     This paper presents the best combination of theoretical and corresponding experimental verification, while the author should explain more discussion about biomedical electronics.

2.     Is there any role of the refractive index, it should be clarified?

3.     Author should define the percentage error and must include error bars in the graphs.

4.     Few grammatical errors were observed, please read the manuscript thoroughly and correct them before publication. Some sentences are not giving clear information, these should be re-write.

5.     Please explain about the possible for the production of commercialization.

6.     Authors should add some good authentic research citations not just conferences proceeding of 2022, either the theoretical or experimental.

In the case study, the author employed an array of light-emitting diodes (LED) to overcome the challenges of the performance of the single LED in wearable devices. This work attended to provide the optical wireless power transfer method for solving the problems of the energy efficiency of implanted and wearable devices through utilizing LED-based components. The study can appear successful in the IoT and IoMT-based applications to increase their energy efficiency. Meanwhile, I have some concerns about the manuscript before its publication, which are included:

In abstract:

(1) Please, clarify the weaknesses of the research era to provide the idea.

(2)The abstract was not followed a standard structure and appeared weak in problem definition, the main challenge, and idea innovation. Please, apply the mentioned characteristics in the abstract.

(3) Please, specify the role of the idea on the outcomes through presenting quantitative comparing results.

(4) I faced some grammatical and typo problems such as "optical energy transmission efficiency, than that with darker color patterns and denser materials.".

(5) In keywords, the author has to utilize the abbreviations after their description such as "Optical wireless power transfer (OWPT)".

In introduction:

(6) I think the biosensors is categorized into wearable sensors or devices, not implanted component. Please, re-check the concept.

(7) I faced some grammatical and typo problems such as "These devices can be deployed at different locations inside human bodies, depending on specific medical purposes they serve for.".

(8) Please, describe all abbreviations on the text for only one time such as "Optical wireless power transfer (OWPT)".

(9) It seems not professional that author directly pointed out his study through "our work" in "For instance, perovskite optical transceivers were proposed and studied in our previous works [15], [16] to create bidirectional OWPT systems that have great potential for many applications [17] and for improving sustainability and socioeconomics [18].", etc. You can refer to their sources like other references.

(10) Please, describe all abbreviations before employing them such as "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" and "Internet of Things (IoT)".

(11) I am worried about the novelty of the idea. The experimental results and the analytical methodology can not reflect an idea's contribution. All strong studies have to cover the two mentioned characteristics. Please, pointed out the work's novelties if the author aimed to the other highlighted features of the study.

In methods:

(12) Please, present an introduction of the section before starting with the subsection title.

(13) Please, integrate the text color into one specific color (black).

(14) The proof of the previous Equations of the related studies is hidden from the researchers though the author dominated the issue. Please, insert the related formula of the reference [14] and refer to it or remove the sentence "This linearity characteristic of optical receivers was shown, e.g. for perovskite solar cells in our previous research [14].". Also, please, refer to comment (9).

(15) I think not appropriate that a section or subsection is started by a Figure (such as 2.2 subsection).

(16) Optical and wireless-based communications can overcome the challenges of energy efficiency and power covering in the IoMT, IoT, and Metaverse, especially on vehicle devices when facing a normal and ideal situation. Meanwhile, fault tolerance and system availability have a critical role in IoMT and monitoring vital signs of the human. Due to the high sensitivity of wireless communications and optical resources to the conditions of environments (temperature, humidity, etc), I expected to present an analysis to prove the idea in facing the addressed problems.

In results and discussions:

(17) Please, present an introduction of the section's concepts before starting the subsection.

(18) I think improving the transmitted power is caused by reducing the fault rate between the transmitter and the receiver. Hence, I think that the author can prove the improvement by comparing missed transferring between a single LED and an array of LEDs.

(19) Please, utilize a unique format to address the Figures in the text. I faced inconsistency format on referring to Figures such as "Fig.5" and "Figure 5".

(20) Please, utilize a unique color for the text format. I found several different colors such as "[31], [32]".

(21) Please, revise the caption of Figure 9 into (a) and (b) based on their purposes.

(22) The author presented a comprehensive discussion about the reported simulation and experimental results. Meanwhile, the discussion will appear successful to prove the outcomes if the author presented the reason for improving results for light pattern and LED array. The mentioned analysis was invisible in the section.

In conclusion:

(23) Please, present the future plan in a separate paragraph "Lastly, the comparisons between experimental results and the proposed theoretical formulas show the effect of the light reflection at clothing surfaces that cannot be ignored, and hence, further works are needed in the future to better elucidate this point.".

Finally:

I am worried about its novelty in comparing the previously published studies of the author in the research area. Due to the sensitivity of the medical devices in the aspect of accuracy and characteristics of wireless and optical communication, I think an analysis of the idea's efficiency was hidden in the study when facing noisy environments and weather situations (temperature and humidity).

This is a well-written manuscript on investigating the feasibility of using optical wireless power transfer methods to power implanted and wearable devices. It will interest a reasonably broad readership of Sustainability. I have the following comments that the authors should address before final acceptance:

1.       It would be better to list both the advantages and disadvantages of the state-of-the-art methods and the methods suggested in this manuscript. It is necessary to clarify and highlight them (both advantages and disadvantages).

2.       For a typical implanted device, using the charging methods suggested in this manuscript, how long would it take to fully charge a device? How often does the user need to charge a device? It would be helpful to list a realistic example of the use case, to convince the readers the convenience of using OWPT method.

3.       This manuscript uses silicon solar cell as the optical receiver. Will other types of solar cells have higher efficiency and other benefits?
