Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper proposed proposes a method for extracting contour surfaces and planning drilling paths based on a vehicle-mounted 3D scanner. The completion of this work has practical significance for the intelligent rock excavation. The paper is well structured and the quality of the English is satisfactory. The conclusions are solid and convincing. A few minor revisions are listed below.

1. In the “Introduction” section, the literature review on related research should be more comprehensive. Some references may be helpful, 10.1080/00207543.2010.507608, https://doi.org/10.3390/w14244093, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10230-020-00701-x, 10.1007/978-3-319-05666-1_4, 10.1109/ICCAS.2014.6987875

2. Some Chinese characters in Figure 16 should be changed to English. The resolution of Figure 17 should be improved.

3. Please carefully check for writing errors in the paper. For example, “there is a problem of under-excavation interference around the excavation contour” should be changed to “There”.

4. The introduction of field experimental results is too simple and should be more detailed.

5. The conclusion should be further summarized.

6. This is an interesting and valuable topic and good writing, I think it can be accepted after minor revision.

Minor editing of English language required

Reviewer 2 Report

This manuscript proposes a method for extracting contour surfaces and comes up with an algorithm to optimize drilling paths. Overview the research, this is a very interested issue, and the manuscript presents well organized/written, and quality. The article has good scientific contributions for underground engineering construction. There are some minor concerns which need to be addressed clearly before the manuscript could be accepted for publication.

Some detailed comments on this manuscript:

(1) The language has to be worked upon.

(2) The title of Figure 16 is written in Chinese.

(3) Please double check the Fig 14 and Fig 15. Are the X and Y axis titles missing?

(4) Besides the pioneers’ work, there are also some new research results needed to be considered and cited in the field of drilling and reinforcements.

(5) Field results and analysis:The specific on-site application effect should be demonstrated with more detailed data.

(6) The conclusion section should be reorganized to be clearer.

Abstract, keywords and introduction are all ok. Only the title needs a very minor modification as shown in the attached annotated pdf.

Line 209: Why in red?!... Also, why superscript?. Is the order of reference is correct here?. Please check.

Line 237: Space between digits and units. Please apply it for the entire text.

Line 169: Caption of Fig. 3 needs rephrasing. Same for Fig. 13, Line 291.

Line 334: You need to insert unit for the distance column in Table 1.

Line 356: What is the scientific background to generate x=4 and x=9 randomly?.

English is ok and just needs minor polishing.
