Reviewer 1 Report

The authors applicability assessment of real-time near-surface air temperature reanalysis products in Inner Mongolia in this study. It was a very meaningful piece of work that yielded some very practical results. HRCLDAS high resolution data has very good performance. The nearest neighbor interpolation method is employed to remap data. Does the interpolation method affect the evaluation of the data? Have you tested any other interpolation methods?

GENERAL COMMENTS

Keeping in mind the increasing temperature of earth and other erratic changes in the climate of earth due to global warming, this topic is an important one to be studied, because the Near-surface air temperature reanalysis products are particularly important for the study ecological environment and the development of agriculture and animal husbandry in an area. The paper is written in a prolific manner but gets dull and drab at many places due to providence of extra and un-sequential information. The wording used is bit difficult and is not reader friendly. The communication and flow of narration in the paper is average. The references are supporting the details provided in paper. Most of the sections of the paper are lacking technical necessary information needed to support the data provided under each section. There isn’t any detail about that how can these satellites used in a more advanced way and on a larger scale to do near air temperature analysis. The topic chosen should be holistically defined and explained because it holds significant importance as it directly impacts weather forecasting, climate research, environmental monitoring, agriculture, energy management, disaster preparedness, and urban planning. By verifying the reliability of these products, stakeholders can make informed decisions and take appropriate actions based on accurate and up-to-date temperature data. The article needs to be smartly re-shaped with some major and minor modifications.

SPECIFIC COMMENTS

Specifically giving the reviewing comments on this paper portrays that first of all the title of the paper is vague. The abstract is not written to the point and the sentences are not properly connected to each other. The introduction of the paper is also has shortcomings in it. Other sections like data, methods, diagrams and graphs needed to b explained in a professional manner. The discussion needs to be a bit revolved around the main relevant information. Results, summary and future prospective should also be shown in a smart and quantitative way. Considering the topic of the research article, it is of great importance to be published in this journal, but considering the requirement and grading criteria of this journal some major and minor modifications explained below and above should be done in the article positively to be published this manuscript in this journal.

TITLE

The title is really very vague and weak in clarity, does not give the reader a clear understanding of the data provided in the article. The title should depict the reflection of remote sensing field so that the reader can know that in this article, use of such tools is done for the measurement of the near surface air temperature analysis. Like the title could be “Comparative data analysis of 3 satellites for measurement of near surface air temperature in Mongolia

ABSTRACT

Some of the shortcomings in the abstract are :

1.      Make it more brief and to the point.

2.      Bring flow of narration in it

3.      Clarify the statements of sentences.

4.      Avoid using long and complex sentences

5.      Provide more insights about the information

By addressing these points, the paragraph will become clearer, more readable, and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the study and its results.

INTRODUCTION

It should include the,

1.      Use of remote sensing

2.      History of remote sensing

3.      Description of all the 3 satellites with their specification

4.      Their strong and weak points.

5.      The authenticity of data collected by them

6.      The factors affecting the authenticity of data

7.      Some formatting mistakes are also there

Ø  Paragraph structure is not good.

Ø  Lack of flow of narration

Ø  The frequent use of importance words as abbreviations should be avoided.

8.      It should also define the normal climatic conditions of Mongolia and changes inn it in the recent years.

DATA AND DATA METHODS

Following points should be considered In the above sections ,

1.      Data methods should be properly defined

2.      Give a short comparison between old and new data methods

3.      Authenticity of data methods

4.      Importance of data methods

5.      Data processing tools should be explained in detail and their value.

6.      The collection of prudent data should be there.

7.      Use of smart art portraying geographical areas and region along with the data used should be there.

8.      The Spatial and Temporal Resolutionon data sets should be explained technically to give a detailed view of the data collected.

A very important point is, the paragraph lacks an introductory context or a clear connection to the larger study or paper.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data analysis have some weak points that should be covered like,

1.      Explanation of analysis methods

2.      Efficacy of these methods

3.      Use of innovative and technical graphs.

Apart of this, the section is explained in a good and brief way considering all the technical and scientific measurements.

DISCUSSION

This section needs to be explained in more detail.

The results from all the 3 satellites and remote sensing tools should be explained in continuation with their mentioned name.  Appropriate reasons for the deviation in the date regarding the temperature should be given and points should be properly enlisted that why one satellite is better than the 2 others, rather a comparative analysis between them should be efficiently done.

SUMMARY

The summary should be concise and to the point encompassing all the necessary information about the article. It should also include some graphic content to make this section more attractive.

CONCLUSION

This section should also be included along with clear explanation of the best remote sensing tool that can be used for the accurate measurement of near surface air temperature.

FUTURE PERSPECTIVES

The article must include this to tell their research gaps that can be actively more researched on I the coming future to bring more advancement regarding this field.

Although, article is written well but need some grammatical correction and coherence between the sentences, hence, it needs minor English editing.

In this comprehensive assessment of near-surface temperature reanalysis products for the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR), the study reveals the applicability and performance of three different datasets: HRCLDAS, ERA5-Land, and GLDAS. The findings not only emphasize the critical role of temperature reanalysis products in ecological and agricultural research, but also highlight nuances in the ability of these datasets to faithfully reproduce regional thermal features. Here are some of my comments for the author's manuscript.

1. Expand on the practical implications of the findings. How might the accurate reflection of spatiotemporal changes in near-surface temperature impact Inner Mongolia's ecological, agricultural, or other applications? Provide specific examples or scenarios where these results could be valuable.

2. Discuss the potential implications of the underestimation observed in HRCLDAS and the overestimation in ERA5-Land and GLDAS. Are there particular situations or applications where these biases might have significant consequences? This could help readers understand the practical relevance of the dataset's performance characteristics.

3. Further elaborate on the limitations of the HRCLDAS dataset, specifically regarding its coverage, temporal resolution, and missing data. How might these limitations impact the dataset's usability for specific research or applications, and what strategies could be employed to overcome these shortcomings?

4. Include a brief discussion on the selection of appropriate reanalysis datasets based on specific needs. Provide guidance on how researchers or practitioners can make informed decisions when choosing between HRCLDAS, ERA5-Land, and GLDAS for their particular applications.

5. Conclude by summarizing the key takeaways from your study's evaluation of the temperature reanalysis products and their applicability in Inner Mongolia. Emphasize the significance of your findings for advancing ecological research, agriculture, and decision-making in the region.

6. The research period from 2018 to 2020 is relatively short, the reliability of results should be further demonstrated.

This study presents an assessment of near-surface air temperature estimates from reanalysis products of three different centers against weather station data for the Inner Mongolia region. It is a relevant topic since extreme temperature events can lead to serious damage to economics and society.

The authors made a comprehensive evaluation of the hourly-to-seasonal temperature variation, comparing the three datasets with the weather station data. The methodology is concise and properly described. The results are presented in a very clear and intuitive way. The discussions and conclusions are consistent with the results presented.

Considerations

Data

  • In this section, you could include a brief description of the study area, with maximum and minimum temperatures along the year, and the main meteorological phenomena that influence the region.

  • About the HRCLDAS data, it is not clear to me if this dataset is publicly available or only under request. And what is the temporal coverage of the dataset?

Line 117: Replace “neat surface air temperature data” with “near surface air temperature data”

Figure 7: Please verify the caption of panel (d); it says “with BIAS”, but isn’t it Correlation? What does it represent?

Lines 368-375: This paragraph was also displayed before Table 3.

Figure 12: Please include in the caption that the figures show the spatial mean for the August 2018 case study.

Table 4: What are Title 1 and Title 2?

Line 407: Remove the first “rapidly” of this sentence: “The rapidly warming climate is rapidly changing”
