Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

"Analysis of the relationship between the expectations of local residents for the women’s professional volleyball team and local image, SOC perception, and local attachment"

The study is quite interesting and relevant, it is well written and structured, with all sections presented clearly and with good bibliographic support.

The results and conclusions of this study show the importance that professional sports clubs, in the present case of women's volleyball, can have in the promotional effect of the regions where they are inserted, providing immense benefits for local development.

I suggested to the authors to reduce the number of Keywords.

Kind regards

1 reviewer’s comment

I suggested to the authors to reduce the number of Keywords.

☞ We reduced the number of keywords to make it easier for readers to understand the content of the paper.

Reviewer 2 Report

Overall, the article presents an interesting study on the relationship between local image, social overhead capital (SOC) recognition, and local attachment in response to the establishment of a new women's professional volleyball team.

However, there are some areas that could be improved:

1. Theoretical Background and Hypothesis Setting: It is mentioned in the preface to explore to predict the city image and SOC recognized by local residents and the attachment to the local community felt by local residents. However, there is no mention of exploring the relationship between economy, culture, PR, and local image. Why do you specifically discuss these three variables and not other variables? What is the basis?

2. Results: Line 236 indicates that Table 3 is "the correlation coefficient value", and Line 242 writes "the largest square value of the correlation coefficient". Please confirm and make a clear note in Table 3. The values in the table and the meaning of the values in brackets.

3. Line 235, it is recommended to use the Collinearity Diagnostics method to judge multicollinearity problem.

4. In Table 3, the superscript number of local attachment should be 6.

Thank you very much for reviewing the research. And thank you very much for giving us a chance to revise.

Our researchers very much respect reviewers' decisions and comments. Our researchers are still academically scarce. It is a team that strives to advance through a repeated challenging process of research, submission and revision.

We tried to revise as much as possible following the reviewer's advice. Nevertheless, more modifications may still be required. We ask for reviewer's understanding. And if our research needs further modifications, we'll work hard again and again.

☞ Currently, when local governments in Korea want to accept sports, the most important thing to consider is whether there is a direct attraction and operational effect (Lee & Ryu, 2004). Previous studies related to this generally present the expected effects of local sports events by dividing them into economic, cultural, and promotional dimensions (Jo, 2010; Kim & Lim, 2022). Accordingly, this study set the three expected effects of economic expectation effect, cultural expectation effect, and public expectation effect as variables based on the contents of previous research as a theoretical basis.

*Previous research includes all studies cited in the theoretical background and hypothesis setting section, and related information is additionally presented in the corresponding section.

2. Results: Line 236 indicates that Table 3 is "the correlation coefficient value", and Line 242 writes "the largest square value of the correlation coefficient". Please confirm and make a clear note in Table 3. The values in the table and the meaning of the values in brackets.

☞Relevant information is indicated at the bottom of the table so that readers can accurately understand the meaning of the values in Table 3 and the values in parentheses.

3. Line 235, it is recommended to use the Collinearity Diagnostics method to judge multicollinearity problem.

☞The revised contents are as follows.

Correlation analysis was performed to check the correlation and multicollinearity between each variable. Multicollinearity refers to a case where one independent variable is well predicted by several other variables. If the correlation coefficient is higher than .8, the problem of multicollinearity occurs. As a result of conducting a correlation analysis to identify this problem, it was observed that there was no multicollinearity problem as there were no variables showing a correlation of more than .8.

4. In Table 3, the superscript number of local attachment should be 6.

☞The number of superscripts in local attachments has been modified to 6.

Reviewer 3 Report

The authors need to thoroughly work on the manuscript. This include improving sentence construction (shorten sentences), improving methodology, discussion (ie new knowledge contribution) and referencing (reduce too old references).

Too long sentences ended up distorting the meaning.

1. The authors need to thoroughly work on the manuscript. This include improving sentence construction (shorten sentences), improving methodology, discussion (ie new knowledge contribution) and referencing (reduce too old references).

☞We attempted to write the manuscript thoroughly. Long sentences were shortened briefly, and theoretical content was added to ensure the reliability and validity of the methodology. In addition, we tried to refer to the latest references rather than older references. The attached manuscript is a revised manuscript that includes all of the above content.

Reviewer 4 Report

Dear authors, the manuscript is generally well written and easy to read; a slight spell-check is required. In my opinion, the study is well conducted and the results of the study are interesting, I have just some minor suggestion.

Abstract

The abstract is quite dense and could benefit from being more concise and straightforward. It's important to communicate the key points in a clear and accessible manner.

The abstract jumps straight into discussing the study's objectives without providing context. It would be helpful to briefly explain why the relationship between local image, social overhead capital, recognition, and local attachment is important or relevant.

The abstract presents findings that suggest relationships and effects between different variables. However, since this study is observational in nature, it's important to clarify that causality cannot be definitively established.

The abstract briefly outlines the findings, but it could benefit from explaining why these findings are significant. How might they contribute to the understanding of local attachment, sports, or related fields?

keywords usually should be different from that used in the main title.

Introduction

The literature on the subject is sufficiently well summarised.

Methods

The methods section is sufficiently well described.

Validity of the findings

The results and discussion section are quite clear and organised. The parameters considered are well presented.

It could be usefull highlight the strenght of your study beside the limitations.

Reviewer 5 Report

1. Among the limitations of the research it is mentioned: "it is unreasonable (for the results of the study) to be extended or interpreted for all clubs in the Republic of Korea". What then is the purpose of this study?

2. What are the objectives of the study?

3. Who is this study for?

4. In the Discussions it is clearly mentioned that the effect of economic expectations does not have a statistically significant effect on the local image, and in the Conclusions it is said that "the establishment of a professional sports club has economic effects". We ask for clarification.

5. Also in the Discussions, the wording "establishing a club in a region means an increase in entertainment through culture" is unclear.

6. It is not very clear whether the establishment of a sports club or a women's volleyball team is being considered. In the article the two notions are used ambiguously.

Author Response

Dear reviewer 5

Thank you very much for reviewing the research. And thank you very much for giving us a chance to revise.

Our researchers very much respect reviewers' decisions and comments. Our researchers are still academically scarce. It is a team that strives to advance through a repeated challenging process of research, submission and revision.

We tried to revise as much as possible following the reviewer's advice. Nevertheless, more modifications may still be required. We ask for reviewer's understanding. And if our research needs further modifications, we'll work hard again and again.

The revised contents are as follows.

Thank you again.

1. Among the limitations of the research it is mentioned: "it is unreasonable (for the results of the study) to be extended or interpreted for all clubs in the Republic of Korea". What then is the purpose of this study?

2. What are the objectives of the study?

☞The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze how the establishment of a local professional sports team affects the expected effects of regional development, regional image, and the attitudes of local residents. For this purpose, since it is realistically difficult to survey professional sports teams in all regions of Korea, a survey was conducted only on AI PEPPERS, a women's professional volleyball team recently founded in Gwangju Metropolitan City, Korea. Therefore, it was suggested that there may be a generalization error in interpreting the results of this study by expanding them to professional sports clubs in all regions of Korea.

3. Who is this study for?

☞This study believes that the problems of the professional sports industry centered in the metropolitan area can be solved through the creation of a local professional sports team. In addition, it is believed that this research can contribute to the development of the local community through the expected economic, cultural, and promotional effects, and can help encourage sports activities among local residents.

4. In the Discussions it is clearly mentioned that the effect of economic expectations does not have a statistically significant effect on the local image, and in the Conclusions it is said that "the establishment of a professional sports club has economic effects". We ask for clarification.

☞This is our big mistake. The same revised contents was presented in the conclusion that economic expected effects does not have a statistically significant effect on the local image.

5.  Also in the Discussions, the wording "establishing a club in a region means an increase in entertainment through culture" is unclear.

☞The revised contents are as follows.

In other words, establishing a club in a local area means that local residents, a collection of local communities, play an important role in forming a better society by creating positive interactions.

6. It is not very clear whether the establishment of a sports club or a women's volleyball team is being considered. In the article the two notions are used ambiguously.

☞The main purpose of this study is to analyze the expected effects of founding a local sports team. However, because it is difficult to research and analyze professional sports teams in all regions of Korea, the concept of AI PEPPERS, the recently founded Gwangju Metropolitan City women's professional volleyball team, was used. If you suggest any changes in this regard, we will revise them accordingly.

Round 2

Reviewer 3 Report

Validity - While it is known that authors used Cronbach Alpha, they only mentioned that it should be 0.8 or less without informing the reader what was the value they found.

Can someone watch a local sporting events (yearly) eg.,  more than 3 times-4 times? I suggest that authors should clearly state eg., 3-4 times

References 23, 38 and 41. For clarity were they all published, if not I suggest that authors should not include them.

This is much improved.

Author Response

Dear reviewer 3

Thank you very much for reviewing the study twice.

Thank you again.

comment 1.

Validity - While it is known that authors used Cronbach Alpha, they only mentioned that it should be 0.8 or less without informing the reader what was the value they found.

☞ Based on the theoretical background, we suggest to the readers as follows that validity is significant when our findings are less than 0.8.

"Correlation analysis was performed to check for correlation and multicollinearity be- tween the variables. The correlation coefficient is an index that summarizes the degree and direction of the relationship between variables in a single number and is expressed as a value between -1 to +1. As a result, the higher the value of the correlation coefficient, the higher the relationship between the two variables, causing multicollinearity problems and reducing the validity of the measurement tool. Accordingly, Challagalla & Shervani (1996) [61] called multicollinearity when one independent variable is well predicted by several other variables, and stated that this occurs when the value of the correlation coefficient is .8 or higher. After conducting a correlation analysis to identify this problem, it was observed that there was no multicollinearity problem, as no variables showed a correlation of more than .8 (Table 3)."

comment 2.

Can someone watch a local sporting events (yearly) eg.,  more than 3 times-4 times? I suggest that authors should clearly state eg., 3-4 times

☞ We modified this by clearly indicating the number of times local sporting events are watched (yearly).

once-2 times

3-4 times

5-6 times

more than 7 times

comment 3.

References 23, 38 and 41. For clarity were they all published, if not I suggest that authors should not include them.

☞Our research team once again checked the references cited in this study, and it is clear that References 23, 38 and 41 are papers published in Korea.

Reviewer 5 Report

1. The article has no research objectives, research questions;

2. I did not understand to whom it is addressed;

3. It does not represent a pattern for all newly established cities/regions/teams

 4. Possibly, a comparative research could be done in which, considering the hypotheses formulated, to check with several clubs/teams established in recent years whether they are confirmed or not.

Author Response

Dear reviewer 5

Thank you very much for reviewing the study twice.

Thank you again.

comment 1. The article has no research objectives, research questions;

☞Establishing a new sports club in the local community is an important factor that can enhance the local image, develop a social infrastructure owing to tourist visits, and make residents feel attached to their community. Accordingly, this study examines the relationship between local image, social overhead capital (SOC) recognition, local attachment, and the founding effects of a new women’s professional volleyball team. Through this, the purpose of this study is to derive a community-linked sports profile that can elicit active and voluntary participation and support from local residents. As a result, it can be used as primary academic data to continuously strengthen the connection between professional sports and the local community.

☞The research questions to achieve the purpose of this study can be explained by hypotheses. Implications that meet the purpose of this study are presented in the discussion section through the influence relationships between variables set by the following hypotheses.

comment 2. I did not understand to whom it is addressed;

☞This is provided as basic academic data to local governments wishing to establish local sports teams or to strengthen regional development through professional sports.

comment 3. It does not represent a pattern for all newly established cities/regions/teams

☞This study analyzed only the newly founded women's volleyball team in Gwangju Metropolitan City, South Korea, and presented a limitation of the study that there are errors in interpreting the results of this study as patterns for all cities, regions, and teams.

comment 4. Possibly, a comparative research could be done in which, considering the hypotheses formulated, to check with several clubs/teams established in recent years whether they are confirmed or not.

☞In this study, we provided a forum for discussion based on previous research on recently founded local professional sports teams. In other words, the theoretical background and discussion presented in this study was presented based on previous research on various recently established local sports clubs. In addition, this study and the results of previous research on recently founded local professional sports teams reached relatively similar conclusions.
